Honestly, he's essentially Captain America for mutants. A great leader that others trust to follow above all others. And the love triangle between him, Jean and Logan isn't nearly as dramatic since Jean and Scott are pretty much true soul mates that give birth to a mutant savior in more than one timeline. The movies really underplayed the importance of Cyclops.

Guys...You MUST always watch through the credits on these comic book movies, for an after-credit scene. You missed an important clue for the future movies. And yes J, there are MANY more X-men movies. I'm glad you guys liked this one, since most tend to rate it pretty low, compared to the rest of the series. And Amber, that famous guy is Stan Lee, who wrote the early Marvel comics and created most of the original characters that Marvel movies are based on, such as X-men, Hulk, Spider-man, Iron Man, The Avengers....on and on. The X-men First Class Magneto is WAY more relatable. You totally understand where he is coming from, and why you don't want that smoke. Michael Fassbender played him to perfection. Its a part of the prequel trilogy that is First Class, Days of Future Past, and then X-men Apocalypse. I would also recommend X-men Origins - Wolverine, and THE Wolverine. The Wolverine continues after this movie left off. Which is where things get super confusing. In The Wolverine movie, Logan goes to Japan and has adventures there. The X-men movies bounce around the timeline front and back. After you watch a couple more, then you are ready for Deadpool.

17:10, in the comics the Phoenix is actually not Jean's alternate personality. It's really a cosmic force that is practically unstoppable. For example, the Phoenix went rogue once flew Jean across the galaxy and triggered a supernova that wiped out an entire civilization. Phoenix used the power of the super nova as a snack. The way the Phoenix is portrayed here and in a later X-Men movie is light weight compared to the comics.

There's an end credit scene, y'all. Also, it's Beast you're talking about. His name is Hank McCoy. You'll learn about him in X-Men: First Class.
@micpar2

The blue furry guy is Dr. Hank McCoy The Beast. Originally he was hairless. He had brown hair but looked like a freak. Because he had huge feet and hands. But was a super smart scientist. The original X-Men from 1963-1971. Comic didn't sell very well sadly, in 1975. Marvel decided to relaunch the series with a Giant Size #1, and continue the original series with #94. Hence not only did we still have the original team. Of Angel, the Beast, Iceman, Cyclops & Marvel girl/Jean Grey. They brought in a whole new team too. Wolverine, Colossus the Metal man from Russia. Nightcrawler from Germany, Storm from Africa, Sunfire originally a Anti-hero from Japan. Banshee a former X-Men villain from Ireland who became a good guy. The movies are very different from the comics. Wolverines are real small mean killers like their cousins from Wisconsin the Badger. Logan in the comics is 5-3". Not 6-3" Hugh Jackman a young Clint Eastwood clone. Jean Grey became the Phoenix in a much different way in space. Which is redone in newer X-Men movies sort of a recasting reboot. The newer movies are much more comic characters/stories accurate too.

@micpar2. Hah!!! You are the first person I've ever seen note the uncanny resemblance of Hugh Jackman to a young Clint Eastwood. Especially in the first movie, there are times when he looks EXACTLY like Eastwood. But I've never seen anyone mention it.

Three words... post-credit scene. (Also, the elderly gentleman watering his garden in the flashback, was Stan Lee. Co-creator of X-Men, Avengers, Spider-Man, Incredible Hulk, Daredevil & Fantastic 4) Next film in release order would be X-Men Origins: Wolverine... 'Nuff Said.

Fun fact: part of the reason for Cyclops' death was Superman Returns. James Marsden(Cyclops) was contracted to play Richard White in Superman Returns. The filming schedules for the movies were going to conflict so the decision was made to have him be Jean/Phoenix's first big victim.

I have always thought that the producers of these movies have done Storm wrong . She absolutely has one of the most amazing powers and in this movie they have her almost losing to a fist fight . For goodness sake the woman can fly and control lightening and Tornados . She is not treated any better in any of the other movies either . Wonder why?

I seem to remember Famke Jensen (Jean) only agreed to return for this third movie on the condition she had a bigger role to play; as did Hallie Berry (Storm)- and so the writer's created Jean's alter ego, The Phoenix, and Storm was given the job of replacing Professor X and head of the school.

Hank McCoy's base mutation is larger hands and feet as well as near-superhuman reflexes and agility. The furry blue form(and his codename, Beast) came from an experimental serum he created and had to use on himself to protect it. Nightcrawler did not return because he decided that the X-Men's violent excursions wasn't for him but he is willing to help if needed(this was revealed in the canon tie-in video game based on the previous movie). The real life reason for his absence is because Alan Cumming(the actor who played him) didn't enjoy the make up process as it was very long and unpleasant so he chose not to reprise the role. Don't worry though, we'll see a younger version later on.

35:27, the actress playing the Cure scientist is Shohreh Aghdashloo. She has appeared in several big budget sci-fi projects in film and television. Most notably she portrayed UN Secretary General Chrisjen Avasarala in the tv series The Expanse. Her character is a wise older woman who is a grandma and career politician who doesn't mind cursing a fool out. If you two would like to see a sci-fi show that paints an interesting and grounded view of the future check out The Expanse.

Hey Rob Squad! I've been binge watching your movie reactions, and I really hope you continue with this X-Men series in release order. My favorite is X-Men Days of Future Past because it combines this 2000's cast with the current First Class Cast to make for an awesome crossover. And to reiterate what many have already said, don't forget to forward to the end credits scene at the end of each movie.

Jean isn't the only class 5. They are classed as Omega level mutants in the comics. I'm not sure why the term wasn't used in the films. Maybe a rights issue. But Professor X, Magneto amd Storm are also Class 5 mutants, as well as many others

Bryan Singer didn't want the comics being too much of an influence on his films. From the first movie he basically banned the cast from reading any source material. Hugh Jackman still read them cause he wanted to give the role justice for the orginal fans.

As traumatic as Prof. Xavier's death was, in the comic, "Dark Phoenix" obliterated an alien planet, inhabited by 5 billion beings. The Dark Phoenix Saga was a classic 40 years ago. Ian McKellan was masterful as Erik/Magneto.

Callisto is the fast mutant. In the comics she fought Storm with no mutant powers to decide who will lead a tribe of mutants that live underground called Morlocks. Speed isn’t even her power in the comics.when Storm and Callisto fight, Storm has to overcome her claustrophobia. They do a jousting fight with staffs. Storm fought to releae X-men team mate Angel. In the animated series it is Cyclops that gets kidnapped. Storm also fought for leadership of The Morlocks.

Mystique was so useful, and NOT only because of her shape-shifting powers! She could fly a helicopter; she was a computer hacker; she was a kick-ass martial artist; she had so many talents that had nothing just to do with her mutant factor. Magneto had the anti-anti-racism extremism, so that he could not see her as an ally, even as a useful "plain human." Strategically, a really stupid, short-sighted move- as clearly, she still had a lot of intel on them. Better to have kept her close (or killed her, but even he wasn't *quite* as cold as that), but he chose not to. Many mistakes and mis-calculations, he made, in his zealous, "righteous" cause. Hence why he and Xavier were such opposites.

"That's a comic book...that's a famous guy." Uh, Yeah! Only the creator of Spider Man, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Doctor Strange, Ant Man, Nick Fury, and literlly HUNDREDS of other comic book characters! He is the reason Marvel comics exists, and thus, all these movies! In the comics, the original X-men were Professor X, Cyclops (who was like the team Captain), Marvel Girl (Jean Grey), Iceman, Angel and the Beast (fur-ball). Their arch nemesis was Magneto and his brotherhood of mutants, featuring Mastermind, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and Toad. You will definitely want to see all of the other Wolverine and X-Men movies...they are all great!
