Air Assisted Airless Explained. PerformAA DEMO & Graco Ultra XT SETUP

Great video as always Pete. Just to clarify for your audience watching the video: The Graco Perform AA gun comes with flat tips (as you demonstrated) and with a twist tip set up. As you already stated, the Twist tip version is good, however the best performance (higher transfer efficiency and better fan control) comes from the flat tips. Provided that you use the correct filters in the manifold and the gun filter then blocked tips should not happen. With regards to what air compressor is suitable. Well for that I would say, most 2 hp to 3hp air compressors will power most AA guns (Graco, Wagner, Kremlin and Durr etc). It just comes down to if they can run continuously or not. If they can, then you don't need a big tank so it makes them a lot easier to move around. If they can't then a compressor with a big tank would most likely be required, but that make it hard to move around. If you can use a very quiet compressor as per the video, then it will keep you sane and not annoy your customers if they are in the house whilst you are working. Cheers Mike

Can I be the first to say well done great to watch and hear your thoughts on AAA setup.. My thinking is the gun filter is a weakness on the Graco comparing to my Wagner version which is a simple to remove and clean. Love to see you do a side by side with guns to see any difference in over spray and ease of use. That Graco XT is looking good sounding well not sounding much at all because the quietness of it. Thank you for your support my friend 🙏 I get asked a lot about the floor protection - it’s an absorbent fleece with a plastic backing.. a metre in width that can be folded for stairs - not 100 percent perfect for stairs, in that the protection is designed for hard floors.. but I find you can tack into place like stair rods and create a runner up the middle 👍 Great quality and cost effective, a product you can shake clean, roll up and reuse over and over.. Hi Pete. Nice Video. You can also convert this pistol for use with the standard fflp tips and have also air assisted. The spray quality is the same. But you save paint a less overspray. I have the g40 gun and love it.

Great stuff pete,what a nice subtle finish the air assisted airless is,nice saving of paint too especially if your using a fair amount of paint and the fact you can rig it up to an existing sprayer with compressor etc is really clever instead of having to buy a separate air assisted machine altogether,the lack of overspray is great too,this would be ideal for kitchen presses or furniture do you think?

Great video. Looks pretty good however those guns are £600. The compressor will probably be very expensive as well. Where I live no one will pay extra for a good job so im not sure i could justify the investment. Its a great setup. 👍

Nice! But have you seen the cost of this kit. We have a large 13cfm compressor, so a new regulator only I think. 695XT will take care of the airless, but a hopper needed, as with the 495. Must speak to Sprayman on this. What else? Loads of time and patience! This seems better suited to heavier paints and epoxys where an HVLP setup is great for thinner materials. If the material is very expensive you still have the wastage issue with an airless pump, but it blows conventional spraying out of the water. Love to see some comparisons though with other spray types and it's a shame that the reversible tip setup of a normal airless couldn't be used in this application, although I guess this is a minor gripe. XT is quiet, but what about that compressor!

Thanks for your kind input, sharing your thoughts and experience.. a message I wanted to convey is the compressor doesn’t need to be with the airless pump, could even be outside.. it’s a quiet version Vs other compressors, but can still make you jump when it kicks in.. This is it from Amazon - it’s a plastic backed absorbent fleece 👍 not strictly a solution for carpet (it moves a bit), but I prefer it over a ‘roll and stroll’ that has the potential to be problematic when removing.. this solution you can roll up and use over and over amzn.eu/d/fX0SgY6

Thank you buddy 💙💯 Having sufficient CFM delivery of air from a compressor is critical.. you can’t comprehend the volume of air used, certainly Vs a nail gun or even a portable unit for inflating car tires.. A higher CFM requirement especially for a full AAA flat tip setup - sone AAA guns have a modified air cap for a lesser requirement, with that you’ll have some AAA benefits, but not the ‘full AAA’ experience (like in this video) 👍 Happy to help if I can, and / or if you’re in the UK direct you to my friends at SpraymanUK 🫡 Keep in touch, regards Pete 💙💯

Proof of concept is fine but for small volume works (in my opinion) an Airless Air Assisted tech is an overkill. TBH, I was expecting to see you use a Graco G40 or PerformAA 50 with RAC tips gun. By allowing one to use existing Graco Airless tips it must have some benefits over YET ANOTHER set of tips to buy. Pete, your thoughts please?

Hey buddy, i appreciate your thoughts - as you know I’m equally a fan of small, quick , small project solutions such as the QuickShot.. what excited me about this demonstration, first and foremost was the use of Ultra XT technology - for its quiet and super steady running pressure (very beneficial to AAA).. Also this is a ‘full AAA’ setup, by that I mean if you’re using a RAC X converted gun, you’re not getting all the delivery of air (by design less air holes). You’ll get some AA benefit but not all. It was a subject I considered including but in the absence of a RAC X conversion, it was tricky to approach / demonstrate.. same as systems with onboard compressors, Vs a separate compressor.. you’re needing a separate compressor with enough CFM output to supply continuous and sufficient air to a ‘full blown AAA air cap’ ..The PerformAA is the replacement for the G40 / G15 👍 hope that makes sense 😄 Then it all comes down to finish quality that all stems from the improved transfer efficiency of a full blown AAA setup - straight airless and the introduction of Graco FFLP has bridged the gap, there’s no denying.. but AAA and paired with Ultra XT, the efficiency and finish quality is next level 👌💙💯 I for one are a fan of all Graco spraying technologies, especially excited about new developments coming soon 👏👏👏 Hope this helps my friend 🙏 Regards Pete

Hi Pete, not specific to this video but I'd really appreciate your suggestion on a suitable, or the most suitable sprayer for my needs. I'm a carpenter/builder who wants to start spraying my own work, both woodwork and general wall/ceiling decoration. As I'll only need to spray one house per year, is there a single machine that could handle the volume required to cover the m2 of a house and be nimble enough to do the woodwork? Ideally I'd have a Graco ultra max for the woodwork and a bigger machine for emulsion but I'd find it hard to justify buying 2 machines when they likely be stored in the lock-up most of the year!

Hello my friend, I’m happy to help and advise any way I can.. Instantly what springs to mind, if the Graco GXFF, and if funds stretch - the cordless version (GXFF Cordless).. whilst appealing, don’t be tempted by the UltraMax HH for your woodwork spraying needs.. it’s a great unit, but you’d be better off with investing in one unit to fine finish spray your woodwork and also capable of spraying emulsion.. it’ll certainly spray one house per year.. The GXFF, is a hopper design (just pour in your paint), with a flexible 3/16” 7.5m hose.. then if you went for the cordless you’ll get the Contractor Compact gun - a great manoeuvrable, soft trigger pull gun, perfect for fine finishing and spraying emulsion.. Then cordless, you have ultimate portability 👍 The GX range have easy / cost effective pumps that can be swapped out by yourself when needed - but don’t get me wrong, I hear many stories of these units working hard and keep going 👍 So yeah, invest in one unit and take a look at the GXFF (known as a GX19 in North America).. hope this helps 💙💯 Regards Pete
