As a small child I visited Sigiriya the fortress on the mountain in Sri Lanka and climbed the spiral stair case to see the then famous Sigiriya frescoes. I was mesmerized by the colorful paintings on the polished walls of scantily but beautifully clad young women wearing jewelry, and flowers on their bikini like clothes probably to suit the hot climate of Sri Lanka in a culture that accepted partial exposure of women in historical times. However those paintings were sadly destroyed a few yeas after I saw them by someone who splashed almost unremovable paint on them several years ago. None of the ruling parties who governed Sri Lanka made any effort to restore them! Instead they closed the spiral stairs and the entire area to tourists!! At present tourists are charged $40 each to climb the rock to see ruined buildings of the palace with the swimming pool built using ancient architecture. Sigiriya has been declared as one of the world heritage sites by the UN. I hope the new government of Sri Lanka will either restore those frescos or if impossible at least re paint them just as they were many centuries ago, guided by former photographs and duplicate them for future generations to see. Tourists then may be happy to pay to climb Sigiriya instead of Pidurangala which has no archeological value but has no fee to climb to get the same view of the surroundings like that from Sigiriya.
