Air Cooled VW EMPI Hurst Style Shifter Replacement

After the replacing the shift bushing my bodged up EMPI Hurst shifter needed to be replaced. I put the stock shifter back on and was not happy with it either... so replaced with a new EMPI Hurst shifter. The fitment is good, but the boot was terrible so I disassembled the shifter and replaced the shifter boot with one that I got off another shifter.

I just installed This shifter with a nice rubber boot and chrome trim , in my 71 Karmann Ghia...! It shifts freaking unbelievable...! 🎶🙏🙏🙏🎵. The pattern is extremely tight and almost straight up and straight back I could not believe how much better my Karmann Ghia shifts.....!!!!

Yeah, I really like that shifter! There are better and more expensive ones out there, but that one really works for me! I just aquired an original Hurst shifter from the 70s. Wild Bill was so gracious to gift it to me! I can't wait to install it! Thanks for the comment, man!

I had a bugpack T handle which bugged (see what I did there?) the crap out of me. I picked up a stock shifter. This is on the trike so 2nd and 4th come close to hitting me in the nuts. The shifter would twist and the ball would pop out. Still some issues but try not to rotate when shifting. Great video. I enjoyed the crap out of it. Shifters can be a total pain in the ass. Enjoy!

My T-handle kept hitting be on the right side of my right knee.... VERY BAD! I was glad to only have that thing in there for a day.

I just don't know where the rotation issue is coming from. Everything feels tight. I wonder if the shift ball isn't sitting low enough in the cup. (There's a joke there somewhere. lol)

WOW it shows how much different a short shifter with only 40% shorter travel makes I can see why the shifters with 50%-62% shorter travel are recommended for racing cars and not for daily drivers

Yeah, it was quite a bit shorter, much more solid feel, too! My T-handle shifter is waaaaaaaaay shorter than this, too, but I don't like the excessive force required to shift (you lose mechanical advantage with a shorter throw, so you have to shift lots harder!)

Makes sense higher pivot point = less leverage= more force required to change gears so in theory a shifter extension would counteract it

Speaking of shifter columns... We learned something yesterday: between the 1992 and 1993 model years, GM made a change to their NV3500 truck manual gearboxes - the older ones had a taller shifter yoke socket, the newer ones were about half the height. How did we learn this? Well, the reman gearbox that was in Brother's truck when he bought it grenaded a coupla weeks ago, so we ordered a fresh one. The truck is a '95, so we ordered one for a '95 per the VIN. Got everything home, and the weather was nice yesterday so he decided to get to work installing it. Several hours and volumes of cursing later, it's in and everything's bolted down, so we go to put the shifter column back in - and the ball on the bottom of the column misses the socket on the yoke by a good 1/8". ...O!o... One session of cursing and calling people later, we opt to give up for the day, and when I get home, I start looking, and discover what I mentioned above. Turns out the old reman gearbox was the early version, and the one we got was the type that was actually supposed to be in there. Thankfully, the proper column is readily available on eBay, but man, you shoulda heard us...

As far as the boot, as I said in the video.... it was on another old Hurst-style shifter that I got in a pile of parts from someone else. I don't know how it got there, but I kept it!

Lets see new paint, fixed head leak, fixed breaks, new shifter, Thats has brought it up to a full 90 hp by now. Oh yeah new carbs it defiantly got 100 hp by now. And you fixed the shifter bushing it is pushing total of 110 Horses. I would have the machine shop cut out a new plate for the old shifter and maybe it will work too on another project.

Where can I get a replacement wire or do you know what gauge wire that is? I have the hurst shifter and I cant get the wire to feed to the bottom of the shifter. Iv tried everything. And i tried for about 2 hours.

Mine just came from the local hardware store. I can't tell you what guage, the bailing wire I used only comes in one size.

That rubber boot actually came up with another empi shifter that I used to have that came with another car from years ago. The shifter fell apart but the boot was still good, so I've used it on a few different shifters. Sorry I can't give you any more input, but the thing does fit perfectly on there!

Just rewatched this (really great) vid as I’m switching out a flat 4 eliminator shifter and replacing with an old empi hurst style Couple of questions if that’s okay. Did you lube the new shifter at all before fitting? It doesn’t look like you did from the vid, but maybe edited out and did you have to adjust the retaining bolts after your test drive?

The new shifter ball joint was already lubed. But I neglected to show me greasing the shift rod cup in the tunnel because I had been having shifter problems previous, and replaced the unit so many times that the cup was still full of grease, lol! I hope that helps! Thanks for the question!

Great video. I have a question I have a 68 vw beetle I just installed this shifter last night and everything is realy tight! My short shifter was loose like a spoon in a coffee cup lol I left the old shifter plate on and put a quick shifter on also. should I remove the old shifter plate? You think that would give me more play? And easier to get in gear?

Yes remove the plate, it's affecting your spacing and thus your gear alignment! Other things may happen too, so,remove it! :)
