In US news and current events today, the likely next Air Force Chief of Staff Charles Q. Brown, Jr., made a powerful statement on living in two worlds as a Black man and an airman as a USAF general.
The U.S. Air Force is among the world's most elite organizations, and its next leader will be grappling with a very different American landscape in light of the George Floyd protests and Black Lives matter protests that have swept the world. As a Black man navigating through the military, it can be difficult to reconcile the USAF mission with his own lived experiences as a Black man, but for General Charles "C.Q." Brown, Jr., it's important to reconcile both to heal the nation and keep it safe.

He reminded me of serving in our U.S. Navy in VR-57 where we had only 1 out of about 45 or so pilots who was an African-American. Lieutenant Commander Rudy Porter. I remember how much I enjoyed flying with and working for him. I am also reminded how my service in our military showed this small-minded young man how much each of us has to offer our country, and to one another, regardless of the color of the skin that we were born with. In these extremely difficult times, the General, along with all of the African-American men and women who I had the privilege of serving with make me proud to be an real American, that is one who is overcome with the feeling of honor for serving alongside them. My shipmates. Our country needs to immediately begin putting our African-American sisters and brothers in such leadership positions so that real changed will happen, and we might one day truly stand united as Americans who have equal reasons for being proud of our country, and proud to live alongside one another. But despite such laws being on the statute book, serious riots take place frequently between the whites and the blacks. This gangsterism has now permeated society and people in many urban areas live constantly in a state of terror. Those who have sown the seeds of racist violence are now themselves reaping a harvest of chaotic violence, in which even teenagers are participating brutally. As every action has a reaction, this reaction has reached its extreme all over the world in such an ugly and unjustifiable manner that it seems impossible now to reverse the relationship between the whites and coloured people. If the whites have any wisdom, they should know that black people are superior to them in many areas. For example the white skins cannot sing like the blacks. They don’t have the same natural gift of rhythm. I have seen even when the blacks carry their dead they play a band, while all the mourners move in a rhythmic dance-like way. To understand and appreciate them, you only need to be subtle, to become humble to realise how much they are blessed with gifts by the Divine. The talent in sports which the blacks have, cannot be easily surpassed. All the games which require vigour and agility are performed better than anybody else by the black people. In basketball and base- ball games, the blacks predominate and because of their proficiency and indispensability they are accepted by the whites as equals in their teams. Why should this non-racialist attitude in sports not spread to society as a whole? One has to accept that most of the great singers are black people. Of course some white people have been able to succeed but they cannot beat the black Western singers who are so melodious and beautifully rhythmic.

One of the statements that hit closest to home was when he described not feeling “black enough” or having to fit in to two worlds. That is definitely something I myself have faced as a Mexican-American, and is the reality for many people of color. Growing up attending mostly white schools in the suburbs, I was “too Mexican” and then around my Mexican cousins or family friends I was “too white.” Granted I am a white passing Mexican, so I undoubtedly have more privilege than even some of my family members; but I too struggled with racism, colorism and classism all my life. That’s why we all need to come together and support our black brothers and sisters in this time of need. Black lives matter ✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿

Thank you Sir, fellow retired Airman. As a black man that serve right out of high school military life was a challenge in many ways. I didn’t have a mentor going in so it was like learning to swim without lessons. As a black soldier promotion came slow and hard. Had the same qualifications, time and experience but some of us was treated that we wasn’t competent to lead and yes I did get called the n word but I didn’t allow my opposition to keep me from reaching my goal. In general I believe the armed forces is one of the best careers period if justice is served. I thank Almighty God for His grace and help because I do believe I’m a better man today. I stand at attention and I salute you for your testimony which is uplifting of which I choose to save in my library. May Christ Jesus continue to bless you and your family...
