Here's my LRS/scout origins: my FIRST airfield seizure at Bragg, we land, assemble and make movement to the tree-line. Once there, we conduct a 5 mike SLLS (Stop, Look, Listen, and Smell). About 3 MINUTES later, and under NVGs, a BUSH right next to me gets up and moves carefully forward 50 meters. I freeze and don't realize if they are OPFOR or not. I don't say a thing! 30 seconds later, the bush COMES BACK and starts talking to ANOTHER bush! "Hey, are you coming?!?" And then that second bush got up and followed movement! My buddy close-by saw them and all I told him was "I want to be one of THOSE guys!".

I’ve always been fascinated by the lifestyle of special operations, so I have been looking into cross training into one of those jobs in the reserves. I have a family and 2 kids so working for the FAA is very appealing. In order to be eligible though, I have to be age 30 or younger. Just worried I won’t be able to separate AND complete the pipeline in time before 30. I will say though I am impressed to see this man deciding to follow his heart instead of following the money. I’ll be separating soon and would like to join CCT/SR in the reserves if able, but feels like a long shot. Thanks for the vid.

It was mentioned or eluded to that the Air Force now has a "sniper qual'd " operator, so does that just mean every SR will have training emphasizing on long range weapons or will that be an actual selection process in itself. I would think not every operator going through the SR pipeline would be capable of a SOCOM sniper standard or what's perceived to be the standard amongst the sister services, curious how that will be implemented.

This will result in the younger guys looking up to you when things becomes hard and they can't seem to see the solution or they may want additional options,(like thinking out of the box). With time you make the transition to "loved Grandpa", "the wise old man", the kids will always want your opinion on their mission plans. The most important thing is to stay healthy and avoid injuries because been older than the others you need to be more cautious but is very important to mention that the peak in the life of a MAN is from 38-45 yrs and if YOU stay in good shape you'll give the young guys "a run for their money" and they'll RESPECT you after that, YOU don't need friends because WE are all family, it doesn't matter in what branch of the Armed Forces WE are. As a old vet of both Echo Company 51st Infantry (LRRP) and the Ranger Regimental Reconnaissance Detachment (now the Ranger Regimental Reconnaissance Company one of the 4 US Tier 1 units) I cannot agree with you more about the US Army's horrible decision to go without organic Reconnaissance at all levels. It's very telling that 2 of the 4 Tier 1 units (RMMC and ISA) have a primary mission of Reconnaissance. I became a flying Warrant Officer (RV-1D Mohawks) and flew 8 years until the Mohawk program was downgraded. In the late 80s and 90s I was a electronics nerd, even putting the first Sony digital video camera that came out in 86 in one of my RC model aircraft and flying it over the maneuver box at CMTC Hoenfels 3 hours before 3/8 Cavalry entered their final Reconnaissance in Force exercise of their ARTEP. The Squadron CO told me to FO, so I took my video and a map to the FSO, who adjusted all of his preliminary TRPs. In the first 20 minutes of the exercise 85% of the OPFOR was eliminated. The was years before we started testing UAVs. I ended up in the S-2 at 7th SFG. But I was still a Nerd and still 90% dependent on the fundamentals I learned in a Scout platoon. Over 2 years I kept suggesting really odd and dorky ways of getting things done. I was the groups head Nerd. After 2 years of being known as the Strange guy in S-2, I was recruited by the Intelligence Support Activity, the premier Reconnaissance element of the United States. You can't volunteer for ISA, they find you. It sounds to me like the Intelligence Support Activity will be knocking on a few USAF Special Reconnaissance operators doors late at night in the future.

Like GL said, the Army has dumped LRS at the division and corps level! Only cav 'scouts' and battalion 'scouts' (PLT). For a few years (mid 2000s) the Army made Battlefield Surveillance Brigade (BfSB). They were tasked to provide SR to an Army Corps (like the 525th BfSB serviced the18th ABN Corps [82D; 101st; 10th Mountain]). They were a great creation, with a few mounted cav 'scouts' (not SR qualified) and 1 dismounted LRS troop (Special Ops qualified). Free-Fall, dive, fast-rope...all special operations (not special forces) capabilities for a 'conventional' Army unit. Of course, it didn't last! ! Not even 10 years later they were turned into expeditionary Intel Brigades WITHOUT ground troops. I will never understand WHY?!?

@Man In The Arena Thanks for the reply and recommendation. SF embedding with the enemy, training the enemy of their enemy to fight, and specializing in multiple disciplines has always been something I've admired and believed to be the optimal way to fight on small scale battlefields and prepare for the possibility of larger scale war. As a prior Corpsman, I know the 18D medic sets the standard alongside Pararescue. That said, I'm looking for a position with a more focused mission and AFSOC is good at that from my understanding - I think it's just part of the USAFs culture to be efficient. I could be wrong though, especially when being utilized by SOCOM vs AF priorities.

Can anyone help lay this out for someone in high school, just following the pipeline is obvious but what should someone look out for, curveballs etc.
@Sunny-uh5bc3 жыл бұрын
Practice stretching before working out (obviously), never swim alone, and be prepared for long hours stuck in a spot whilst being engaged to the enemy.

Be absolutely perfect with your finances. Pay bills early. Don’t do anything illegal that could get you into trouble. Practice “digital signature reduction”, aka don’t go around saying stupid shit on the internet. Nothing you’ll regret. A security clearance is needed for this job and these are a few examples that will make that process easier. Just a curveball example, albeit minor. If I could do it over again, I would be spending every available moment studying the material provided by this podcast. That, and rucking :)

For the very basic qualification, what ASVAB score do you need for SR?
@OnesReady4 жыл бұрын
The “QT” (that’s the score just to get you in the Air Force) is minimum 31. But that score is an average of 4 subsections: (M)echanical (A)dministrative (G)eneral (E)lectrical Every AFSC has a requirement under one or more of those areas. For all Special Warfare it's G49.

@@OnesReady thank you so much for your reply. I am prior servive as an Air National Guard memeber and highly considering enlisting active duty. As a guard memeber who served from 2006 through 2012 and did one tour to Iraq in 2009, I have become really interested in these fields. I am now encouraged to talk to a recruiter to find out my possibilities.

I’m terrified to go airborne school and free falling school! Can anyone help me with how to get over my fear of jumping out?
@WadeSafechuckAndTheWNB4 жыл бұрын
I am a novice skydiver with just over 30 jumps and have never been in the military. My biggest tip for anyone afraid of heights, in context of freefall, is thinking of distance as time - 14,000ft (above ground), can mean 45 to 60 seconds of freefall. There are variables to consider when discussing times in freefall, but any fear or feeling reluctance (for me) is based on context of the jump. The closer I am to the ground, the less time I have to pull my chute. I'm more comfortable being very high off the ground than being close to it. I have never done a static line jump but I imagine its a simple as checking your gear and stepping out of the door. I hope that helps. Also, there are skydiving groups on social media that could be very helpful for any questions you have concerning this topic. Take care!

As a STO, you'll work with SR everyday. If you're a CRO on the AFSOC side, this will also be the case. If you're a CRO on the Air Combat Command side, then you will not. SR utilizes STOs/CROs for their officer core.

Can I join special forces if I’ve already enlisted? I was supposed to leave the 31st of March but got postponed going in open general
@OnesReady4 жыл бұрын
Listen, do NOT delay. Contact your recruiter and tell them you want to go Special Operations. If they give you a difficult time about it, go to airforce.com>Connect>enter your zip code and education>select you're interested in Special Operations. This will give you the contact details for your regionally based Special Operations Recruiter. They should be able to help, but if not shoot us a message on IG or info@onesready.com. If you go in open general and want to do SOF, you run the risk of being miserable because you won't be doing something you're dreaming about.🍑
