In the military pilots are taught that the parachute provides the shelter and the cordage. Also fabric for filtering water.

The idea that there's something in a survival kit that citizens are not allowed to have when people can just walk around with AR-15s is the most uniquely American circumstance.

The 4 hour wait on the water purifier tabs is to kill Cryptosporidium. It can kill the 'regular' buggies in a much shorter time. The purifiers that work in 'only' 20-30 minutes don't kill Crypto.

Boiling kills everything those tabs wont! But if your in a really bad situation its better than nothing at all!

While these two items are part of a larger survival bag, they are available to other services as personal survival kits. I know some Special Forces teams have ordered them through the normal supply chain process. Your review of the items was interesting. A point to mention, for the Special Forces guys, these items are to augment what they are probably carrying on their person.

Once again, awesome review and video! As an Air Force, Vietnam era vet, I really enjoyed watching this video. I sure would like to get hold of both modules. So much has changed since the 70’s in military survival gear, it’s amazing! I believe there is a third “module” that consists of a CAT tourniquet, as well as an under seat “pan” survival kit to augment the other modules and the air crew survival vests worn by air crew members and/or pilots. Also, your additions and subtractions were spot on. The only change I would make is toss the wire saw and replace it with a Victorinox Hiker because of the excellent saw it has. Your video’s are great...keep them coming! Thanks!

I second my fellow Air Force veterans comments. Crypto is not something most water purification items handle. The five set system was to prevent a one strike from damaging the whole kit. Also the pilots were trained for survival in the harshest conditions imaginable with the BAREST of essentials available to them. They would consider these items a luxury.
@frankyturrizo4240Ай бұрын
The Hiker and the Camper are identical except the hiker has a Philips and the Camper has a corkscrew, which is more useful in the woods than the Hiker Philips head

Hey, guys...a suggestion here to augment your light survival kit...I take large diameter soda/shake straws and fill them with dry food items. Take a pair of long nosed pliers and squeeze one end of the straw, with about 1/8" sticking out. Melt that with a flame and then quickly slide inside jaws of pliers and squeeze and hold for about 20 seconds, that will seal that end. Fill the straw with your choice of dried food items, for example, sphaghetti, rice, powdered milk, sugar, salt, etc. then repeat seal process. These will be water tight and take up very little room in your bug out bag (BOB). Practice with some smaller straws until you master the technique. I also use these to hold .22rimfire ammunition, about 7 to 9 rounds.

Nice build. I have one of those bags and was trying to decide what to use it for, now I know. I do have to disagree with a point you made a couple times in the video about not putting food items in the kit. In a survival situation, especially for a civilian, food is morale. I like to include at least a little something to eat in my kits, either a storable meal bar or a package of dry soup mix so that someone has a little cushion before they have to start foraging for food. It just buys time, maybe a day or so, in the event they can't hunt or gather more food right away. Of course in small kits there isn't much room for that, but one this size, I'd opt for a little something to keep a smile on someone's face just a little longer. Keep up the good work, love seeing what you come up with.
@Jaybird1963 жыл бұрын
I disagree, as well. To me, not putting food procurement items in a kit, is a bit like shooting yourself in the foot. Depending on your situation, you could be burning a LOT of calories, and need to make up for vitamins/minerals lost to bodily waste processes. You've no idea how long you'll have to survive.

Very good video.. I put a kit together inside a pouch similar to that one. I then put the pouch inside a mess tin and then put them into my webbing uttility pouch. I then slid the shelter element of the kit behind the mess tin for quick access and attached my signalling devices to the draw string on the pouch... Again for quick access.

The frontier water filter only filters to 3 microns, the Sawyer filters to .1 microns. They are not equivalent, in that the frontier does not filter bacteria. It's Apples and oranges.

I guess its no surprise that the escape and evade kits don't come with trick candles. :D Great review though! I have seen those IR glow sticks for sale but not to civilians. I've used regular glow sticks and they typically work well past their expiration dates. As they get older the intensity and duration become shorter.

If I did not already carry one all of the time a Swiss Army Knife (SAK) with a saw, I believe is more useful to me than a fixed blade knife. I did 95% of my camping in the Boy Scouts with and even took a typical 4 blade type scout pocketknife into the military with me. Also, the newer larger Swiss Army pocketknives have longer bladed on them.

Do you ever sell or trade unwanted gear? I like the red/IR flashlight. I like making my own kits but will often start with a pre-made kit and add/replace items as I see fit. I don't think anyone could be 100% happy with a pre-made kit. Build them according to your area and skill.

Part of the full survival kit also contains strong drugs like Modern Ampfetamines, Morphine, Strong conventional Painkillers and Antibiotics that usually a Doctors Persciption. Its a good reason he couldnt send you that. Eventhought that would have been one HECK of a video! "Mkay, nice, Next Lets try some of this Military grade Morphine.... Nice!"

One thing I always notice is many times better or cheaper options are available for camping/survival gear. cutting instruments are a great example. 50.00 for a small knife ? , im not spending that and I realize that's cheap. I just bought 3 - 3 inch paring knives for 31.00 with tax. German made, razor sharp, quality steel, riveted hard wood handle and they come with a hard plastic sheath. 2 seasons in the field ( camping /hunting and some fishing ) and the edge is still very sharp. Just my 2 cents.

Let me ask you something, if somebody has a definite answer please let me know. When it comes to purification water tablets, they have an expiration date, does that mean they’re no good anymore and you shouldn’t use them? Or they are just a little degraded and still good? I’ve got a few packs that expired a couple years ago and I’d hate to throw them away.
@jimcDelta3 жыл бұрын
The modules you have are designed to be replaced as they expire. That way the entire kit doesn't have to be replaced.
@patrickmuhwheeney6518Ай бұрын
Please be aware that I know this question might be super ignorant, but what on Earth is the point of the infra-red lights? If both packets came as part of a much larger pack, why do you need two? Since you can only see them with night vision they only take up space that could be used for multi-lens illumination, and are only (maybe) useful for signaling. Seeing as the enemy most likely has night vision too, it's just a great way to disclose your location...Plus, I feel like you (Eric) would go crazy with the amount of wasted space!

I like to notice what's common among every kit like fire making and cutting capabilities. I have a question for you. I am starting at at prepping and I am making my bugout kit right now and I really trying to make the most organized kit as possible in the sense of making as easy as possible to repack the stuff after use. So my question is: Isn't the way most kits are organized a pain to repack the stuff after use if for some reason you have to keep navigating? Maybe a being naive thinking about easy of use. Maybe it's the way it has to be to save space but I been thinking about it.
@KitbashedSurvival3 жыл бұрын
Yes, most kits are a pain to repack but that's a result of the effort to make the kit as compact as possible and at the same time affordable. There are kits out there that are well organized with separate compartments for each component, but they are larger, heaver and cost more. The Seventy2 survival system products come to mind.

Smith and Wesson bought UST a few years back and I have no idea what happened to them... I bought a bunch of UST stuff in 2016 for hiking because the USAF used their gear and it's been amazing to own and use, the few times I needed their gear I stopped paying attention until I went to get some replacements earlier this summer and their entire brand is completely different, what they sell is completely different and it doesn't look like the same company anymore... It's pretty disappointing since the stuff I have and had is amazing compared to anything else I've seen and it was a worthy investment... But it's all gone now

He wasn’t allowed to tell me. He simply said there are components of the on board survival gear that are not allowed to be in civilian hands. If I had to guess, it’s probably emergency communications gear, a weapon perhaps, and probably some restricted drugs such as stimulants and pain meds.

You find out a lot about military supplies. Logistics is the key to everything military, just remember you don't have to think they do it for you. They don't do the packing someone else does. I still say the best survival thing is a $50.00 bill in the bottom of your shoe.

They do include that (really more of the equivalents) in certain special operations/aircrew/GOV agency kits/SOP's... the spooky mission guys get cool things like hard medications, micro USB cards with various levels of password protected encrypted "valuable" information along with prisoner buy back bank accounts or contacts for negotiation, well thoughtout minimalist escape tools lock picks, hidden cuff keys, shims, ceramic blades,a collection of valuables or money for trading depending on location of operation... also they still supposedly issue out personal "poison" to certain high risk of capture type people...😳 although none of this is new besides the micro USB cards/flash drives... the other items have been around in similar concept since the early Cold War days... like the poison coins or necklaces for early U-2 pilots 🤐
