One way to speed up the air fryer cooking is to put the oiled & salted potatoes in the microwave for 3-4 minutes and have the air fryer 'preheating' for this time. The microwave heats the interior of the potato faster and then lets the air fryer do what it does best. I too love restaurant potatoes.

I just bought an air fryer today and I was amazed how well it cooked. I've been cooking for more then 50 years and as slow as i've gotten through the years, I'm just glad everything else has gotten faster. I like the microwave but I'd rather the food taste like it came out of the gas oven. Your baked potatoes looked great and I'll be using my air fryer a lot from now on. I guess your never too old to learn something new.

Suggestion for those who just can't wait the 30-45 min for your potato to cook in the air fryer. Cook it in the microwave as you usually do. Then salt & pepper the skin & put it in the Air Fryer for 5 min, turn over & cook the pother side in the Air Fryer for 5 min more. The skin comes out nice & crisp!!! Plus, you've cut the cook time down to 15-20 min.

Michael P depends on the size. Cut vent holes poke it with a knife, small ones takes like 5 to 6 mins. Large ones can take 12 mins. Now if you are adding more than one at a time, could be like 20 mins. Depends on your microwave power also .. But if it isn't soft stick it back in their till it softens.

Like my mother, I've always rubbed them well with salt & olive oil. Then bake @425 for 45 minutes, or @450 for 35-40... Depending on how crispy you like your skin. Poking the potato with a fork is a microwave thing so they don't blow up being cooked from the inside out, but it makes a potato very dry if done in the oven.

I'm going to try these in the air fryer tonight. But regardless of how I cook a potato I like to use an instant read thermometer in the middle to make sure it's just right. 210F is what you are looking for. Also, I like to cut down the middle of the longitudinal axis like Amy did, but not as deep. Then make a cut in the middle at a right angle so that you have made a cross. Squeeze from the ends and it will pop open nicely without falling apart.

I never thought about using an air fryer for cooking baked potatoes - but your results speak for themselves. I've used some methods from Cook's Illustrated, which (using a conventional oven) has the oven temp set @ 450 degrees, cooking for 45-60 minutes, in order to achieve an internal temperature of 205 degrees. At that point, the potatoes are rubbed with oil (I use butter), then placed back in the oven for an additional 10 minutes. Once done, open-up the potatoes immediately so the steam can escape. The big no-no's about using the microwave for cooking [even partially] a baked potato, is the "... unevenness with which the microwave cooks the potato, and, rapidly heating a potato causes pressure to build and cell walls to burst, releasing starch molecules that glue together the broken cell walls".
@EricLearnstoCook6 жыл бұрын
I think Cook's Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen are great resources to teach us they WHY's of what to do and not to do. It's amazing how they can go into detail of why not to use a microwave. But then microwave ovens are fast, and we are always in a hurry to eat. The air fryer did a nice job. Thank you for watching. We appreciate it.

I'm debating about getting one. How's the airfryer going?
@EricLearnstoCook5 жыл бұрын
@@colinbunny942 Air fryer is causing us to use the oven less. Good for heating small amounts (good for us). The oven is still needed for larger jobs and normal baking. I'm not sold on the whole air frying thing, but, eating potatoes drenched in a lot of oil seems to taste different the older I get. So a little oil seems OK, but isn't the same as the drenching thing. It's food for heating up frozen fries that you would otherwise do in the oven. Good for spring rolls, etc. Just have to decide...It's a small convection oven that cooks a little faster.

I love baked potatoes, although I try not to eat them often but like them right when I do. My best method is to place one large or many medium baking potatoes in an instant pot for 20 minutes and then rub with your favorite oil, kosher salt and fresh ground pepper and the put it in an oven on broil for 10-12 minutes. If you microwave them first then scoop out the inside and mash them, then put them back inside the potato boat then put in the airfryer for about 5 to ten minutes it will do the same thing. I get these garlic butter dip sauces from Domino's pizza and mix some of it in the mashed potatoes that I then stuff it back into the potato boat and it turns out fabulously delicious.

The reason for poking holes in a potato before baki g is to allow the steam in the potato to escape during baking. You may not have a problem because you cut off the ends of the potato. Not poking holes means the steam can not escape until pressure builds up and the potato explodes.

I also cook with gas, so I consider carefully what I'm gaining by turning on an electric appliance, because electricity cost a lot more than gas and gas gives you a lot more cooking control. I have a small space, so proofing, or steaming of larger items is done in my oven with a pan on the bottom. I do have a little convection oven that I use to brown or melt etc single serving items.
@EricLearnstoCook5 жыл бұрын
OK, you have lots of good points. An air fryer is an over-hyped / over-marketed small convection oven that can handle 'some' greasy foods. That said, if you only want to cook certain foods in small quantities, then they are great. Do they turn out like deep fried foods? No. Can you hit up the frozen section of your supermarket and use this in place of your oven? yes depending on quantity. For some people, the 3 quart models are good. The 5 quart models give a little more room. We use our oven less these days because of air frying. It is a bit faster than the oven. So if you lack the space, prefer gas, or already have a small convection oven - you likely would not need one of these.

Amy, great potatoes for air-fryer. Here's a short cut - start with microwave 2 minutes, cool one minute. Place in air-fryer, bake cycle 10 minutes at 350. Reduce temperature to 290 and cycle to air fry 12 minutes. This crisps outside potatoes to restaurant steak house quality. I also plan meals ahead of time, pre air fry 6-8 potatoes as above and wrap in foil, let cool to room temperature and store in fridge till day of event. Air fry 2 minutes per potato. I usually plan ribeye steaks for meal. Sear steaks in cast iron skillet and air fry 4 steaks on rack top and 4 on bottom for 20 minutes,350 degrees. Wait on unit to flip steaks. 20 minutes on steaks, 12 minutes on potatoes. Quick meal for 4-6 in under 40 minutes.
