What air fuel ratio is too lean?
Any mixture greater than 14.7:1 is considered a lean mixture; any less than 14.7:1 is a rich mixture - given perfect (ideal) "test" fuel (gasoline consisting of solely n-heptane and iso-octane).
What do air fuel ratio numbers mean?
Air/Fuel Ratio (AFR)
AFR stands for air to fuel ratio. Fuel doesn't burn on its own. ... AFR tells you how many parts of air are mixed with each part of fuel. For example, a 14.7:1 AFR (or just 14.7) means the mixture is 14.7 parts air to one part fuel
Is it better to run rich or lean?
Running lean can give you more power but to lean will blow your engine. Running too rich can also hurt your motor. Think of it when you are mixing gas for your weed wacker. It is always safe to add a little more oil than not enough to the mixture
What should AFR be at idle?
If you prefer better PERFORMANCE then we suggest to run an AFR of 14:1 or even richer to around 13.5:1. Most stock to slightly modified engines will run just fine at an AFR of 14.5:1 and yield better MPG. If you prefer better PERFORMANCE then we suggest to run an AFR of 13.5:1 or even richer to around 13:1.
Does a lean engine run hotter?
Running an engine lean means changing the air / fuel ratio to have more air than is ideal (14.7:1 air to fuel). ... More air relative to fuel than usual, means more oxygen than usual. So the flame burns hotter and faster than it should. Both are going to raise the temperature of the combustion chamber.
Can running Rich damage engine?
A rich-running engine burns more fuel than it needs which hurts fuel economy. It is perfectly normal though for your vehicle to deliver less mileage for each gallon in colder months so you may want to keep that in mind if you notice that trips to the gas station are becoming more frequent

Your engine runs lean if your air-to-fuel mixture is too light - this means that the fuel in your ignition chamber is being igniting with too much air or too little fuel. Because your engine is running on less fuel than it should, it is running

The theoretical air-fuel ratio mixture for a gasoline fueled engine, for complete gasoline fuel combustion, the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio is about 14.7:1. In order to completely burn 1 kg of gasoline fuel, the combustion process needs 14.7 kg of air
