They didn’t love them, they were in love with the idea of them. Not knowing the reality of girlhood or what it’s like being a girl as a teenager. They didn’t see the sisters as anything else besides what they fantasized about or perceived on the surface. Pretty, beautiful, creatures is all they saw them as and disregarding all the ache and suffering the sisters had to endure through their conservative parents. The story is told through the male gaze but in reality criticizes it.

to my interpretation it’s not at all a love story. the boys didn’t love the girls, they romanticized them and loved the idea of them but didn’t truly care about them. they moved on once they got what they wanted (ie trip)

My route to this was circuitous, in that I grew up on the east-side of Detroit with lush elm-lined streets, until they were lost to Dutch Elm Disease; and somehow I learned of that also in the further east Grosse Pointe, which is also in its film, "The Virgin Suicides". That movie, combination of its characters, plot, and this music (including its CD narrative cut), seems to me beyond description.
