SenorCrazylegs yeah, they are scary. What if we intersect a wake turbulence from the side? Does it effect the pitch instead of roll?
@SenorCrazylegs5 жыл бұрын
@@NeilDjents I don't believe I've ever heard of an aircraft being turned over it's nose. If you crossed the wake vortex sideways, the effects would be transient, as here. You'd merely cross that vortex and exit into 'clean' air. Yes, this may act potentially in pitch rather than roll, but it would be extremely quick. It would be more pronounced following another aircraft from below on the same line. You could remain within the vortex and it might even turn you inverted depending on your size vs the aircraft causing the wake.

@ronaldsimmons95175 жыл бұрын
The aircraft began its turn at about 1:03 when the starboard flaperon and aileron panels were lowered to give the starboard wing extra lift for the left turn (the opposite would be occurring on the port wing). As the aircraft is maneuvering for its landing phase, it likely caught a sudden shift of airflow (sudden change of angle of attack of airflow) causing a minor stalling effect on the wing. It was most likely the turbulence associated with a shifting low pressure system (can see some extensive lower cumulus clouds and more turbulence lower in the descent). You can see the autopilot try to correct the movement by lowering the flaperon and aileron panels to raise the wing, then raise the panels with the assistance of the outboard spoilers to try and lower the wing because of the over-correction. Amazing how sensitive the autopilot system is.
@mauritsvanderpol74155 жыл бұрын
In addition to that, minor effects do not make a plane like a 747 move like that. The only time I see it, is when I encounter a thermal in a glider. That was no move for a 747 in a minor effect on airflow shift. A bigger amount of energy is needed for a correction that looks like that on such an airplane!

@AviationMavericks7 ай бұрын
Investigation will only conclude what exactly happened. BBC mentioned Air Pocket but in reality air pockets don’t exists. What you are seeing in this video is a wake turbulence caused by another aircraft. Singapore Airlines might have experienced a downdraft which is common inside a cumulonimbus cloud. BBC also talked about Clear Air Turbulence (CAT) as shown here kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnW0aWdpes5rms0si=k4f8MRQAXu7KBIPT but CAT is caused by a jet stream without a visible cloud and I don’t believe it can cause a plane to drop 6000 feet. I feel it was a downdraft that caused Singapore airlines to drop 6000 feet but we will have to wait and see what investigators have to say.

The roll was the most terrifying and was truly traumatic for myself and my 11 year old son. Everyone was yelling and scared to death! I asked the flight attendant what that was and she said she had no idea but figured severe wake turbulence. It was a night flight. Is it possible that’s what it was? DemonLord4 The term air pocket if misused (devoid of air), certainly doesn’t exist yet the term has caught on. The term comes from very early days of aviation. I work for an Airline and it looks like wake turbulence or 'CAT' aka Clear Air Turbulence. If I must be honest it could be wake turbulence due to it being a strong force quick then simply disappears in a fast manner.
@Isaac-ht2bo4 жыл бұрын
The only reason at this moment I prefer Wake Turbulence is because Clear Air Turbulence usually comes around 'SEV' (Severe) Turbulence overall. In this case, the plane was going through an easy stage and I believe the pilots were expecting that.

Wow the reaction time is amazing! Wings are so much like a birds in these newer planes...nature's design blue prints are fool proof...I bet the engineers are still studying how birds stabalize themselves.

It seems like the aircraft crossed the path of disturbed air, perhaps another airliner passed perpendicularly moments before. What i like is the sound of the hydraulics changing tones with the sudden demand on the control surfaces.

@@jiafeiqueen I mean, just kind of things like making 'Titanic' references cos that's obviously the only point of reference they have for anything ship-related, calling it a 'boat', that kind of thing. I tend to tune out though.

That was nothing i experienced Severe turbulence followed by a Huge Air Pocket where the Plane Actually Plunged down so bad everyone was screaming on board not me i thought it was fun, Ok i was scared a little but fun hehe it was many many years ago on a OA B742
@treydadzie56155 жыл бұрын
Tim Miles there’s no such thing as an air pocket it was the turbulence its self. The aircraft doesn’t actually “plunge” it just feels like it because of the downward shift of air.

Hi Babs, no mount just holding iPhone X resting my hand on the window. I try not to push on the window too hard otherwise you’ll notice a lot of vibration which could be to do with iPhone’s image stabilisation.

You were descending in a holding pattern and hit the wake of the plane in front of you. Believe it or not but while the was in a left hand turn, the ircraft sensed a lack of roll in the left hand direction so it applied more @1:45, immediately after it corrected with an abrupt right hand correction.

What you heard before that drop were the flaps coming up in preparation for landing. Sometimes, there's no way to predict it, but it appears that you may have hit a little bumpy air. Also, whenever a plane turns, you may even feel it banking towards the turn you're making, and you may also feel the plane as it's righting itself.
@miaquinn57914 жыл бұрын
I have such a fear of flying, I literally break out in a rash. I haven’t flown in over 20 years. When I did fly I tried to play it cool, I was on an American Airlines flight, we fell a few feet, my stomach felt like I was on a roller coaster ride. The girl next to me squeezed my hand and yelled. We both looked at each other. I was also scared, but after it stopped she said sorry.
@Apodalont5 жыл бұрын
An air pocket? There are no "pockets" of air as it's basically everywhere, only areas where the temperature and moisture levels vary. That's what causes bumpy flying hence why it's most common in cloud layers.
@markstockford91094 жыл бұрын
The 787s flaps don't seem to have much rearward extension, they seem to just hinge downwards like simple flaps on a small plane such as a Cessna.
