I'm always fascinated by ballistic projectiles powered by air or muscle, it's satisfying to use your own body strength to do thing you wouldn't be able to do bare handed
@nuclearmedicineman62702 жыл бұрын
Well, in this case you just might be able to throw harder barehanded. 144 grams, that's baseball weight; regulation weight is 142-149 grams. 27m/s is 60 mph. Pros can hit 100+ speeds, 60 is probably doable for a lot of people.
@fireandcopper2 жыл бұрын
@@nuclearmedicineman6270 I mean in terms of reliable accuracy, it's easy to hit an Aspirin tablet with a bat at arm's length, but do the same at 50m is different
@Make_Boxing_Great_Again2 жыл бұрын
NuclearMedicineman Well of course there are already a huge array throwing weapons, many of them lethal, yet the bow and arrow was still invented and was still a game changing weapon. There are several thing wrong with your suggestion that you may as well throw the spear gun spear, the fact that you can store lethal energy in a compact device that can be released at the very moment you wish by the click of a finger is much better than simply throwing something which requires a lot of time 1-2 seconds, and space 2 - 3 meters. Let’s assume that you have the time and the space, even then, even with training, your accuracy will be far inferior. Accuracy is extremely important with projectile weapons. Would you tell the guy in the film clip who had the zombie on top of him that he may as well just throw the spear? He had neither the time or space and nor could he afford to miss! Also, you say that pros can pitch a baseball at 100mph, well that’s a seasoned professional athletic male in the prime of his life, you couldn’t pitch a baseball at 100mph, you would be lucky to achieve half that. Also, a baseball has a better shake for throwing, a spear gun spear does not. You compare weapons to a pro pitched baseball, let’s compare human powered energy to firearms. The most powerful commonly available firearm is the .50 Bmg, it’s the most powerful by a very large margin. However, Usain bolt running as fast has he can has almost twice the kinetic energy of the .50 bmg! And yet if I was forced to collide with either one I would choose being run into without hesitation.
@Make_Boxing_Great_Again2 жыл бұрын
NuclearMedicineman Yep and if you could throw harder you would have comparable energy and momentum to that of a hand gun, yet I think I’d much rather have a hand gun to defend myself than the option of throwing a spear gun spear lmao.

I grew up speargun hunting on the islands in Greece (no scuba allowed for hunting) getting octopus and the ocationall fish. Most guys had these smaller pneumatic spearguns in holsters strapped to their calf and were only used as backups for the main rubber spearguns; also as self defence only for scuba divers. They were a nightmare to pump up on a hot summer day at a beach with no shade! LOL which is why they always pre pumped them and hoped they didn't have to use them. Your great creation reminds of a gun The Joker (from Batman) used in the comics, long barrel of course but when he pulled the trigger the spear stopped about halfway out revealing a flag with 'BANG' written on it, his victim would then laugh nervously thinking he had just escaped death and it was a joke but when The Joker pulls the trigger again the spear (with flag still attached) would shoot from the gun properly skewering the victim.

It looked like Cholo fired it at the zombie under the chin too. The part of a human skull above the upper palate is not very dense either. So the portion it may encounter most resistance would be when the spear is exiting the top of the skull. But as your demonstration with the coconut showed, it had no problem whatsoever. So DEFINITELY plausible.

You've done it again Joerg, taken a good idea and made it better. I wonder if spring loaded fletching would be possible to add stability over a greater distance? They could be similar to the hunting broadheads with fold out blades, and might allow for a lighter shaft weight as well, adding greater range. You've probably already thought of this though, as your "Thinking outside the box" skills are top notch in projectile design. You can use it outside of water but the 2 reasons why the manufacturer advices against it 1- because they run against legal issues 2- the gun cylinder will get damaged in the long run because it is made to have higher resistance and shooting it above water will make it have high stress like dry firing a bow.
@bunyipdan2 жыл бұрын
Always love your work.......FYI There are many manufacturers of small pnuematic (yes the "p" is silent) spearguns (Cressi, Seac Sub, Asso, Omer Mares) a bit difficult to tell which base model they used in the film. Anyhoo most work the same way ...... however they do tend to reley on the density of the water and the close fit narrow barrel to do a couple of things. One of the functions is to aid in the buffering of the retained piston when it stops in the end of the barrel after the spear has been fired. The teflon piston (sometimes metal in older guns) is stopped by a rubber or teflon/delrin polymer bush, this is enough when the gun is fired submerged in water. Otherwise you will be causing a lot of stress to the end barrel thread when fired out of the water. I know of only one speargun "Mares Titan Canon" in which they also added a spring to help reduce the shock of the piston (because it threw a massive 5/8" spear). Also remember the gas compression relationship as you get deeper underwater....the deeper you are the less potential stored energy you have in compressed gas, so especially in such a small resivior as your gun had its power on deeper dives is greatly reduced. On land no problem. Please carefully consider the length on the spear retention/teather line and ensure it is longer than the potential range of the spear.....if not the when you shoot the spear (spear fishing) The spear will reach the end of line and either yank the gun out of your hand or worse spring straight back at you and nail you right between your eyes. In Australia it is leagal to own a pnuematic speargun.......but illeagal to load out of the water or use it in a manner/purpose for which it was not made......I guess in a Zombie Apocalypse all rules go out the window! There are many more idiosyncrasies involved in spearguns which might help, too many to note.......stay safe, keep on exploring the out limmits of projectile weapons/tools

This Cressi model is an enclosed piston design, and I remember using a closed piston speargun back in the '70's. It seemed that O-rings and such were always a complicating factor - one that led me on my own journey. I built - using a flea-market, used Kidde CO2 fire extinguisher with a tank about a foot long, a few plumbing fittings, and a length of 1/2" copper supply line - a compact open model that, using CO2 as its propellant (it was a fire extinguisher, after all), really did the job. The copper supply line fit snugly over the threaded boss that the extinguisher's horn screwed into, like it was made for the purpose. I used short lengths of hardware store metal rod, hand-threaded - on one end for a commercial spear gun head, and on the other end a washer and rubber seal, held in place by a castle nut, for my spears. The typical spear gun sliding collar with trailing arms was used to center the spear in the tubing in front, and to attach the retaining line; the rear end of the spear was centered and retained by the tight-fitting rubber washer. Deadly accurate. Very simple, and with the large surface area of the washer against which the CO2 pressure bore, the power was easily enough to drive the spear well through a striped bass at a significant distance underwater. I made it neutrally buoyant with small side bolsters of styrofoam. On land, the force of the CO2 from the muzzle was enough to move hedges like a gale does from a distance of 15 feet; under water, the force would put the metal rod through a 2x8" board if I used a steel rod, with its abundant of momentum and sectional density. Aluminum spears worked as well - very fast - but I stuck mostly with steel. I liked CO2 instead of compressed air, because the pressure was constant at 830 psi; compressed air pressure, although it starts higher, drops from the first trigger pull, and the Kidde extinguisher and trigger valve was designed for CO2 pressures in the first place. A refill was cheap, and lasted most of the summer for about 5 bucks back then, and the hydrostatic tank test was easy to pass for CO2 pressure. There was no need whatever for the 2,000+ psi pressure of a scuba tank to fire the spears, given the 180 lbs of thrust against the rear washer; it outshot a triple-strand Arbalete that I had NO PROBLEM. In fact, I had to use a gum rubber strain relief on the retaining line to stop the momentum of the spear from pulling the gun out of my hand when the spear reached the end of its allowed travel (you always use a retaining line in my area; visibility is limited, and you could kill another diver just outside where your visibility ended if you didn't). The line length varied with area visibility. There's no question in my mind whatsoever that it was powerful enough to run a spear clear through a shark, even though the gun was very compact. I also liked that you could modulate the trigger pull to slow the spear down for slower and less muscular, or thinner, fish. A tautog (blackfish) is mush compared to a big striped bass; that makes the gun very versatile, and usable around rocks that would smash a spearhead impacting at full speed. It's really enjoyable to go hunting afield with something that you've made with a Rustoleum yellow primer-sprayed gadget made of tubing, alligator clamped to a tank full of CO2, with a pistol grip at the end of a 90 degree elbow; very steampunk, yet a lethal weapon under water that puts fish on the table dependably and cheaply.

The original is still better in my opinion, because it only requires physical manpower to load rather than pre-charged loads. Of course Joerg's is quicker to reload if you are prepared and have a few on hand. I also like the silent simplicity of the original which retains the air instead of having expended it and having to recharge it. Hmmm...I think it's a toss-up regarding above-water use while the original is still clearly better for underwater as the man himself stated. I'm just glad someone has the time, resources, and interest to do what this wonderful man does! Another very fun and interesting video, sir.

I know a crossbow you haven't made yet. One handed operation, while holding the pistol grip you can put the cocking stirrup under one of your feet, then pull up with one hand, then shoot, without having to move your hand from the handle. If you want to use 2 hands to cock it you can fold out an optional second grip, but you can fold it away for 1 handed grip. If you make it rubber powered it can be very thin. You could even make the stirrup fold down so the entire thing is very sleek for transport. Imagine something that looks like a traditional shotgun, and you a flap down a piece of metal at the end of the "barrel" that is 5 cm by 15 cm, then put the tip of the gun on the ground and put your foot on that and pull up to cock it. It is similar to many things you have made, but it could be so thin with the buttstock in line with it that many people would want one, even if it was rubber powered. I think 4 shots in your "double-stack arrangement would keep the total dimensions very compact. I wish KZbin let me put a picture here to show you what I am thinking, but I think you can imagine it from my description.

As someone who uses spearguns a lot, they are no joke! The bigger (longer barrel) ones pack way more of a punch too 😳 I would hazard a guess that the longer rubber powered guns like 140cm+ with 3 or 4 18-20mm bands on would be more powerful than a surprising number of weapons at short range. They need so much power to push through the water.

Perhaps two versions: One a simple redesign of the WristRocket that can be quickly and inexpensively factory built and shipped to the Ukraine, the second a version using materials readily available to anyone in Ukraine today, such a bicycle innertubes and electrical conduit. I imagine something designed so they are at full power when extended to the face so you can pull the pin with your teeth before launching, but I defer to your superior experience and design skills.
