NO!!😣 DONT just jam it into reverse when it grinds like that, always shift into first or second, then go directly into reverse. That’s even the best way to shift synchronized pickup truck transmissions into reverse.

I worked for a company that had an old binder with a 6v71 in a barn. One day they decided to get it running and bring it in to wash it (it was actually beautiful, blue metallic with airbrushed mural on hood) It was out in the yard running and i pulled it in the shop. Owners two kids were in the shop and I made them cry when I revved it to the governor LMAO! The mechanic yelled at me for revving the old engine (it's a fucking two stroke) and other guy yelled at me for the kids breathing smoke. I got out and said "it even fucking smells good!" And walked away :)

I had a job for a good ten years, driving for a freight company on Martha’s Vineyard year round, that had an old 1983 GMC 4500 car carrier with a great tilt slide flatbed, with a winch, we used to move marine shipping containers around for storage. The truck was powered by the same 4/53 Detroit, with a granny low 5 speed and two speed rear. The truck was spect out for Highway and rough terrain applications, so the rear was also a locking differential that helped a lot off road, not like a front drive axle 4x4 would, but better than most 4x2 trucks, especially with the awesome mud&snow duals. That truck could move! Like 80 mph highway, but crawl through almost anything at idle. I remember delivering a good size (9,500lbs) loaf of 20’ rebar, all strapped together in two bundles. The builder asked me if I could back down the ramp in the foundation’s massive hole left by the excavation crew, for the foundation workers to be able to walk down with all the tools an materials. So I said no problem! I slowly back down, to about 15’ from the bottom of the long ramp, as the hole was 14’ deep! The ramp ended up at 50’ long! So I slid the bad back slowly, till all that weight being extended back behind the rear axle, lifted the front of the truck right up in the air! So all I had to do is climb out of the hole and make my way into the cab, very carefully from what ended up being the top edge of the hole, that was about 3’ from the drivers door! I was able to grab onto the mirror frame, jump over to the top step on the fuel tank, get the door open an slide into the drivers seat! It felt like I was popping a wheelie! I put the truck in low gear, locked the rear end, put my foot down on the fuel pedal and let my foot off the clutch! The site manager who was a friend of mine back then, who was really to take pictures, unfortunately there were no cell phones or Go Pro cameras back in 99, but he did get some great fast shots of me wheeling out of that hole! When the rebar finally dropped off the bed, the front end came DOWN! The truck sounded exactly like the truck in the video! Absolutely amazing!!! Going through the gears, splitting up through 8 gears at full throttle!!!

Sounds like a racey engine because it is one, it's doing double the ignition cycles than a 4 stroke, so 3600 rpm is really 7200 rpm worth of work! Not sure what makes that harmonic ringing at high rpm, but I love it.

10:52 A cheap way to have a diesel shutdown is to buy a ball valve the same size of the intake or add a butterfly throttle on the intake that operates reverse. When you close the valve/throttle the engine choke. You can also make some kind of linkage to operate it from the cabin.

I have heard of the 53 series Detroit engines used in sawmills with the governed RPM set to 3000 RPM or higher. This was done to get the Saw blades turning at the desired speed. I would have thought that this shortened the life span of the engine, but was told by a sawmill owner that they lasted as long as any other engine in a stationary setting.

I have seen in generators as small as 4-53's all the way up to 24v-71's. They have a unique sound and feel. I grew up around an area in Ohio with a lot of oil wells. There were always a lot of service trucks and well trucks with screaming 2 strokes going by my house. Love it!

I drove two road tractors that had 318s in them (8V71). There was a flapper door in the elbow going into the top of the blower that had a mechanical cable (like an old manual choke cable) which acted as the emergency shutoff. When needed such as a run away (they can also run backwards!) you just pulled the cable which released the door to drop down and block air into the blower, starving the engine. Nice little ride!
@oillease1881
@oillease1881 5 жыл бұрын
I was raised on Detroit"s and my first truck had a 6 71. The emergency shutdown was a spring-loaded trap door on the block with a cable you pulled to pull a latch that caused the door to shut and stop the air flow. I never needed it but a friend who a bunch of old hands convinced him to mix gasoline into the oil bath air cleaner for a performance enhancement. He fell for it for it and that cable was the only thing that saved his engine. I guess he never soaked a rag in gasoline and stretched it over the air inlet to get a recalcitrant diesel to stsrt. It's a bit easier on the engine than starting fluid.

I really wish I was old enough to of started my diesel mechanic trade on air start Detroit's. Working in a kenworth dealership in Australia I still got to work on quite a few 8V92's but only a hand full of air starts. The army had the reserved tank plumed up so you could dump your tyre pressures into the tank to start the engine and then you refill the engines once started.

Great detail about the build is what makes it interesting. Story about the starter/rear tires/owner is what makes it relatable and entertaining. And how it interacts in everyday mundane things like a Tim's run. Honestly, I would love to see how/if he refines it, to make it more livable as daily. What benefit/drawback to taller gearing? Do the new shocks settle the ride? Where to put cup holders? How to improve engine performance? What other challenges he'll face. I have a A4 chassis jetta diesel and both side mirrors have oxidized and the mounts gone brittle. I gonna have to order parts from europe because wreckers aren't that much cheaper.

Theres something reallysatisfying about smashing the todos off the list when youre knee deep in projects. Something about standing back at the end of the day with the 'finally thats done' feeling before tidying up, then crossing everything youve done off the list Truck is awesome, even funnier is seeing your pokerface at 12:37 "Shit i gotta double clutch this thing goddamnit"

A Co2 fire extinguisher sprayed into the intake of a runaway will stop it dead in its tracks. Having one near by when working on diesel engines is a great ideal. And ideal to always have one with you in case of a runaway when on the road.

madmax2069 might be a silly question but why not shut the fuel off? Dry injector pump?
@madmax2069

HOWNDOG66 best to just choke it out. Either by a flap on the intake on some old diesel engines, or by spraying a Co2 fire extinguisher into the intake.

Honestly if i got into a diesel runaway when out on the road rather than pulling over to the shoulder and dealing with the noise smoke and breakdown id just floor it into the outside lane and ride that screaming wreckage of smoke and fire right past everyone until the block explodes in half at 200mph.
@HanksDeuce
@HanksDeuce 6 жыл бұрын
Sometimes a runaway diesel uses a blown turbocharger oil seal to fuel the engine with oil instead of fuel. Shutting the injector pump wouldn't do anything in that case. Eliminating the air shuts it off no matter what.

Great idea. You could even connect an inerting CO2 cylinder using a kegerator-sized CO2 jug. I carry one with a pneumatic chuck on a 200 psi regulator for filling tires and running high psi impact wrenches (for a short time) in the field. Beats buying an expensive Power Tank.

This video put a huge grin on my face because I have an ol’ 1949 IH L-series log truck I am restoring in to a normal 5th wheeler, but I’m replacing the inline-6 gas engine with the Detroit 8v71, then I’m adding the *Banks power-pack, fuel-injection performance kit, the computer chip upgrade, twin hp turbo’s and the K&N air intake system, etc., just to keep-up with these newer trucks, but my truck does have the 2spd. Rear-end, it just needs rebuilt because it is slipping, and the lower gear no-longer works, so You get my point, but when this truck is finished, I will post a video of it. It’s an old yellow rig like this one is, but still has it’s stainless steel thankfully! Thanks for posting this, that sounded great!!👍🏽😁❤️👍🏽

Almost all of our old railroad track machines, rail gangs, surfacing&tie gangs etc, had them detroit’s in them. I’ve got the hearing loss to show for it !!! Lol. Btw awesome job on the truck!

With many that had worked for a railroad on the MOW team when if a majority of the equipment was powered by the infamous line of Detroit diesels as if the railway also maintained a fleet of GMC fishbowl buses also Detroit powered when the few fail to mention the 4-71 and or the 6V53 to the 6-71.

great video Those 53 series GM's are something you either love or hate I reckon and that one with a hair dryer hanging off it is quiet (believe it or not) We always say "ya drive em like you stole em" Any GM 2 stroke I have worked on has a flap on the inlet side of the super charger standard from the factory to shut them down incase they ru away. The flap is hooked to a cable to a knob on the dash that says something like "PULL FOR EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN" abd this closes the flap and shuts the motor down instantly, works much better than the bottle of spray stuff and they come standard as far as I know like this so will be surprised if it doesnt have a flap Almost all Macks in Australia up until the late 90's came standard with air start and it is very reliable, the rotation is changed by indexing the internal stationary part of the starter A very cool little truck but not my cup of tea with a screaming Jimmy and a 53 series at that lol , need a good supply of ear plugs Old mate might look at getting some "Jake brake" solenoids for it , would make people look when rolling up to a set of lights lol Great stuff Rich and crew

Heh heh, nice rig! ...and yeah, you definitely have to slam your finger in the door before you drive it, so you're in the right frame of mind to keep the revs up to an acceptable level. Gotta remember, it's a 2 stroke, so when it sounds like it's ready to fly apart, it's just getting into the power band! I doubt you guys ever got over 2300 rpm the whole video, and those 4-53's will rev safely to 2900-3000 rpm without hurting them. You definitely need taller gears and a secondary gearbox or 'Brownie' to really make use of the torque band on these, since they don't really start making good power till 18-1900 rpm. At 2800 they sound like they're coming unglued, but they're actually at peak efficiency.😄👍 The quickest way to crack a cylinder liner on a Detroit is to lug it down under heavy load. The water pump(s) don't turn fast enough to keep the cylinders cool at low rpm, and also they don't make good oil pressure, so everything runs hot and starves for oil.😜 *EDIT* ...oh yeah, and get rid of that damned air starter and grab an electric starter off of a 6V-53 or even a 6-71 (clockwise rotation of course). They're about 1/4 the price, and you don't have to trash 1/4 of your bed space with that huge air tank to run the starter for 10 seconds. These little engines turn fairly easy, even in cold weather, so a couple of 27 series batteries in parallel are more than enough to crank it, especially if you have a block heater in cold weather. Just for sound comparison, here's an electric start 4-53T up on the pipe at a little over 2800: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZqmdmaKfbSShsk
