Thank you. Informative video and food for thought for conscientious shooters. Burst discs are an important part of the safety equation too.

Paintball HPA systems in that era were 3000psi. I remember my first air america Armageddon system. By 2003/4 4500 was standard

Thanks for this - think you are right on with your approach/perspective! I'm of a similar mind and have a healthy paranoia around HPA. My tank is stored/filled vertically, valve up and is mounted in a full length, 8 inch (3/8" wall) pvc sewer pipe lined with 1/2" of rubber mat. This way the tank is protected physically and insulated from sudden temperature changes. Another HPA story... My father saw a lift-truck drive too close to a large (6k psi, 5 foot, 75 pound ???) steel welding tank lying on the floor and snap the valve clean off. The tank lifted off, blew a 3 foot hole through a concrete cinder block wall, flew over 100 yards and skidded another 100 or so feet before hitting and seriously damaging a parked car. There were a couple of close calls/near misses but nobody was hurt. HPA should be respected and is not something to mess with. For perspective, just think of how many shots there are stored in the HPA tank, add up the FPE from all those shots and you'll have an idea of how much distructive power you're dealling with. 😳 Have a good day eh!

I set tanks inside a trash can to fill. Tank is vertical & secure. I purchased an out of date SCBA and took it to a local company and had it recertified. It’s been a few years back but I think they filled it to over 7kpsi for the qualification. The test rig looks like a vertical cylinder that’s filled with water and probably 30” across. The lid is placed on top with an electric host & bolted in place. Asked the tech if he ever had one fail and he said a few but it’s rare and the tank is encased in the blast test cylinder. The tech stated carbon fiber tanks don’t produce much shrapnel, just sort of rips with loose strands of fibers. After talking with the tech I felt a lot better about the tank and the risk associated with it. I’m using a SCBA that emergency personnel in California had used. I rationalized the tank must be pretty tuff for someone to strap this thing on their back and go into a burning building full of potentially hot, sharp, pointy things and the tank not be considered an unacceptable risk to the responder. Just my rational. But no harm to be safe in handling & storage. I have noticed my tank pressure drops a couple hundred psi as the tank cools after filling. I fill to 4350 as I think it’s a little easier on my compressor. I’m using a Tuxing twin with 2 external water/oil filters. I can smell oil when I vent the moisture trap but no noticeable smell when vented at the tank so I’m happy with the filter rig. No doubt HPA is no joke.

I can see an aluminum or steel tank rupturing under some outside force like a bullet or being crushed but carbon fiber tanks are so much more safe in my opinion that you won't have a catastrophic event but rather have a situation like shooting a paint can with a Daisy red rider where it lifts off or spins around till the pressure is gone. I drive around with a 6.8 ltr carbon fiber tank filled to 300 bar/4351psi right behind my kidneys in my truck while doing pest control and I feel perfectly safe. Age of the tank is more a factor in tank safety to me than the anything under normal conditions. Temperature is a concern of course but common sense goes a long way with that also. Great video and subject material.

Well I certainly wouldn't get inside one and plummet 12k' underwater. Generally airtanks are very, very safe. The biggest problems ive encountered is the components that go along with the actual tank. Examples of weak links are brass fittings, low quality connectors, and fill whips themselves. If a hose or connection breaks it can take out an eye or any number of serious injuries. Use good quality components because life may depend on it.Great topic thats never discussed enough. Cheers

When I fill a tank or gun I like to have it higher than the compressor so the fill line is going up hill. When I'm done filling I reverse the line and run the compressor a bit and usually get some water from the line. I then leave the line disconnected on both ends when not in use so it may dry a bit more. I not sure if my precautions help but I think they might. Thanks for the video.

Awesome topic and info I usually fill my guns to 230 bar no more then that because of wear and tear and I don't want nothing to Explode I've had a burst disc pop on my youg heng compressor and that was scary 😳 also when I fill to 250 bar it's been so hot that my gauge will claim to 265 to 275 on my 580cc 300 bar bottle and 700cc bottle 300 bar it wont damaged the bottle but you never no thanks sharing bsafe buddy 👍

Great safety points and overall coverage. You covered tanks, hoses, compressors and safe air. We have seen, as you eluded, less air to higher air pressure capacity. That said, how long before changing tubes or bottles like 480, 580, 700cc?

You said moisture getting inside causing corrosion weakening from inside, would it not be possibly to pull a vacuum on air tanks on guns to remove moisture, like as a maintenance task? A vacuum is easily pulled by a pump from someplace like Harbor Freight, just like pulling a vacuum on a cars AC system.
@ShootingTargets727
@ShootingTargets727 19 күн бұрын
yep there are a few ways to get water out of these tanks the best is to make sure the new air in the system is moister free as it reduces the overall humidity. Hope that makes sense.

with the big caliber airguns ,you wil have only a few shots at max fill , but you can use a external bottle with a external reg set at 190 bar , ,less ware of the gun and more constant shots

I'm wondering how much pressure to leave in my air pistols for pest control as I will need to use it immediately rather than pump it up. One pistol has a 300 bar max pressure and the other 35 MPa. I usually leave about 10% less than the max but will leaving it at max pressure for storage be OK?
@ShootingTargets727

I'm doing things the same way my friend. I never fill my big tank up to 300 bar even though it's rated for that . . . 250 is fine and I use the Hill compressor to get it up to 250. I will never fill my leshiy 2 to 300 bar but 250 as well. For the rest I only have 200 bar guns. I know that 200 bar can still be a bomb when things go wrong but still it is significantly less than 300 bar. My big question is, at what pressure do you store your guns when you put them away for a longer period of time? I store all my airguns in a gun safe and I'm wondering if I need to add a vent hole in the case something goes wrong . . . . best regards from the Netherlands.

Last week, on my way back from the diving shop, a freshly filled 300-bar cylinder in the car trunk accidentaly moved and hit something with its valve. However, no drama occurred - the valve released approximately 100 bars in about 10seconds, cylinder cooled down and I returned back to diving shop.

@@ShootingTargets727maybe one day these tanks will be built with a control explosion fail point. A deliberately weak point, built in that will fail first and just scare you rather than hurt you. Not talking pressure disks because they fail above a certain pressure. Talking about long time tank fatigue that could fail at normal pressures. I am dreaming I guess lol.

I think youre being a bit over cautious. 5/3 is test pressure, burst pressure is sometimes 7/3-8/3. Brittleness of composites is the biggest threat other than impacts. The most likely blowout is burst disk, and or the line or Oring failure. And dont play loose with the cheap Amazon chinese components unless they meet or exceed the wall.thickness to 5/3 pressure ratio. I dont trust anything lesser thwn 6061 9mm thick for

@ShootingTargets727 I completely understand. Every time I fill the cylinder on my guns I sit there mentally picturing a catastrophic deafening blast and shards of shrapnel going in to my eyes and teeth and a nice sized jagged fragment slicing my carotid, picturing my neck garden hosing red juice and my un fragmented eye rolling back while I convulse and gargle when trying to scream for help.. so I'm with you. But the fact cylinders meet CE/DOT/ISO standards means they are absolutely over engineered and the working pressures are less than a walk in the park to them does help comfort me. Hatsan, And the chinese amazon only manufactured stuff not made by alsafe, liaonlaing*sp and Subang Xiamen (tuxing/yong heng/acecare/spritech).. like the oil water filters with 5-6mm unspecified aluminum are way too iffy for me. Also amaxon selling 3000/200bar aluminum cylinders listed as 30MPA/300 BAR cylinders scares me for the sake of the lesser intellectually endowed among us.
