As bad as it sounds, picking several soldiers to unmask and watching them carefully for symptoms is the only way to know for sure whether or not there is no contamination. Even though the protective clothing and test equipment they have now is much more advanced than what little was available in the 1960's, no piece of equipment is fail-safe. Any piece of equipment can give false-negatives and any piece of equipment can fail.

this is a very eriee insight into the early probable use of chemical warfare. To actually take off the mask in the middle of a supposed gas attack to test the air , I WOULD CRACK !

It seems you have never heard of the M17. A mask that uses filters that are inserted into the cheek of the mask. They are smaller, lighter and work about the same.

Interesting aspect they do not do this now days its not even taught. Maybe we can learn by it if you are a soldier in combat where there is a gas attack. I would not want to endorse this procedure. In fact I would not volunteer! I think they would be better to keep the masks on:)

in 1991 I was picked to use for this type of test in a secert meeting of nco I was picked because the upper staff had a personal issuse with me .I was a 29 year old father of a 4 and 5 year old I was not suppose to be told about being choosen
