A ridge vent with an external baffle has the advantage of using the wind - as slight as a gentle breeze - to pull air out of the attic. As the wind hits the external baffle it creates low pressure above the vent openings on both sides of the vent to pull more air through the vent - much more air than thermal buoyancy allows. And, as the wind increases in speed, the vent’s exhaust airflow also increases. This entire phenomenon of wind hitting the external baffle and producing increased airflow is known as the Bernoulli Effect and it’s exactly what gives lift to an airplane.
Please note that the ridge vent’s performance is also dependent on having balanced intake airflow at the soffit or eaves or low on the roof’s edge.
This combination of an externally baffled ridge vent with balanced intake airflow is the most powerful combination in residential attic ventilation
