You should have left as soon as she said you had to sleep on the couch. immediately. And then you should have called Airbnb and they would have refunded you your money because that's not what you paid for. Sorry about that experience. I know it's been awhile but that sucks.

Oh no! How dreadful! I’ve only ever used Airbnb once, over Thanksgiving weekend, Thursday-Saturday nights. I went to visit family in Queens, NYC, and didn’t want to stay with the family because the place was too crowded for the holiday. I got an room for $55/night in someone’s apartment nearby, staying in a bedroom of the owner’s own apartment. I was a bit nervous, but, it ended up being a wonderful experience. The host was extremely nice, helpful- yet left me alone. The place was so clean, you could eat off of the floor, the bed was comfortable, and the shower was great. I guess I lucked out. I will stay there again next time I visit my family.

Wow, I’m disgusted that you had to go through that!!!! As a cat owner I am equally as grossed out, our litter boxes are out of sight and cleaned twice a day sometimes more if needed. Our cats aren’t the types of cats who get on people or sit all over the couches and beds either. My cat sleeps on my bed in one spot and the other sleeps on one of the other beds in her little bed and we have only had her for a week. If we ever have visitors, which we never do, I make sure they are told we have cats, there is going to be hair from them BUT..... I do vacuum very often to keep up with the hair as I became allergic to cat hair with my first pregnancy 8yrs ago.

The mother sounds exactly like Hadassa, one of my former bosses back in college. We avoided her b/c she was generally crazy and she’d have temper tantrums occasionally for no reason. She once made me housesit for her, but the cat-filled house was so filthy that I chose to sleep at my apartment, which was just a couple of minutes away. I never even used her heavily contaminated kitchen, the bathroom, etc. Upon her return, Hadassa had the nerve to say I owed her money b/c I had taken stuff out of her fridge...which I most certainly had not. Filthy, cheap cat lady. No wonder she was miserable and single...

I am surprised you did not get a refund...you have to really pursue it with determination and insisting you speak with the supervisor on the phone..it will not work with texts. I am a superhost and am appalled at what you had to go through and didn't get a refund ! Next time if you have trouble make sure you CALL airbnb and insist on talking to a supervisor....you will get your money back if it's a valid reason .Even now if you pursue this using a phone call and insist with firmness...be nice but not nice at the same time( because airbnb company is very reluctant to give the guests money back I have heard.)...and make sure you don't give up until you get justice....I got into hosting because my husband wanted to do it and I love hosting but am not a business woman so airbnb is easy for me to make money which I need in my senior years...but I am not too happy with some of their "ways" including boycotting the West Bank and not allowing Jews to have airbnb there...that is so racist and I don't like that at all..it's so wrong. Anyway , make sure you are FIRM next time you talk to them ..don't just text...it won't work...you must talk on the phone ..it may take days to get your money back but you definitely should have what with the way her place was so filthy...yuck...she ought to be ashamed of treating guests that way and she needs a different job...

AIRBNB has become a joke where owners abuse it making it what it was intended to be into a nightmare. In cities, people just rent out their places to make money to pay the rent, not to actually be for a nice vacation place. Anybody is doing it who should never be allowed. Many places are illegal and dangerous, gross or just weird with weird people in the other rooms. Also, NY and Jersey hostels are disgusting and many criminals hide out at them as well as they are run by workers who know how horrible they are but don't care. It's not like Europe, hostels in America are a newer concept but not what they are intended to be or how they should be like. Remember, many of the nicer AIRBNB have cameras you might not know about and the owners can watch you on their phone. Many of the AIRBNB and hostels in cities are just full of squatters and there are some scary and weird people you are made to share rooms with. Sadly, people who are from other countries or who are not from the big cities don' understand how bad it is and that these places are not made for what it's supposed to be for.

I don't know what is cheaper an hotel or an airbnb but you should consider that, you're renting a room in someone's house, so you should understand that not all people are clean and organized, I understand that If I enter the airbnb business I should be more aware of what people would expect, but I also consider that not all rentees would care about my clean place and and may leave a horror mess.

Hosting this guest cost me sleep, it kept me up last night it was really quite a disturbing experience. When Colleen checked in she texted me and said that the fireplace wasn't working and that the Internet was slow. I immediately got back to her and recommended rebooting the Internet and ask if she wanted more assistance. I was having a birthday dinner for my son and his wife and asked her if she wanted me to come. She got back to me and said yes, that she wanted me to come. So I left the restaurant, gave my son, the credit card and headed off to help Colleen. When I got there there was a man it was not a woman at all and this was Friday night after 7 PM pitch dark and I walked into a secluded vacation rental expecting a woman, I am up for women in my 50s and I encountered a man it was quite disturbing but I kept my cool. He asked me if I was Angela and I said yes and I was there to help with the Internet and the fireplace, I was expecting Colleen to show up at any minute. I tried rebooting the Internet and it still had a slow signal in the television wasn't working. The pilot light has gone out on the fireplace and this was the first cold day we've had so far so it haven't been used all summer. It was news to me that the fireplace wasn't working. Colleen never showed up and I told the man that I will call the fireplace people and see if we could get in the queue and have someone come out and service it tomorrow, which was a Saturday. I was texting back and forth to the property owner to get the name of the people who service the fireplace. The man told me that I could come back tomorrow with the service technician it was no problem at all, I also told him while I was there I would have the key and look into the internet problem and see if I could figure it out. When I got back in my car safe and sound, I call the fireplace repair people and found out they were only open Monday through Friday. I've then notified Colleen that I would not be able to bring out a technician but I would bring a space heater and I would also try to work on the Internet when I came. The next day when I went to take the space heater to the unit I was told by the guest that they did not want me to enter the unit, it seemed very odd because the night before I was welcome to come into the unit with the fireplace technician and have it repaired! The Internet is also inside the unit and I would need to enter the unit to work on the Internet, it's nothing I could work on from outside of the house. I received no response, so I contacted the guest and said I would just leave the space heater outside of the house because it didn't seem like I was welcome to come in the unit, I felt very strange and scared about that because the day before I was more than welcome. After I returned home man called me apparently he was the only one staying in the vacation rental and he couldn't understand why didn't fix the Internet and I told him I needed to enter the unit to get to the Internet to fix it. I told him it was an odd conversation that we were having and I felt uncomfortable with it and it scared me a little bit but he didn't want me in the unit after all. He said he didn't see any need for me to be in the unit since I wasn't there to fix the fireplace, I explained that I needed to service the Internet from inside the unit and he said that he did not understand that. He was quite upset with me and it upset me immensely. I also told him that he was not Colleen and Colleen had made the reservation and I was very confused about all of that, he said that Colleen was his wife. I have some house rules that tell t the guest when they book that they need to tell me who is coming when they make the reservation and why they're coming, and how many I would be hosting. That did not happen on this reservation, I was not notified that Colleen wasn't coming and I was not notified why this guest was coming and I would've NEVER gone over there on Friday night in the dark into this secluded destination alone if there had been a man there alone, it's just a security breach. There's no reason to put anyone in harms way and that's what happened to me with this guest, luckily I was safe and nothing truly happened other than to scare the Bee Gees out of me. Airbnb has rules that the guest has to submit a credit card in their name and ID in their name and their name a photo of themselves and an email address in their name when they book a reservation and that is the guest that is supposed to be at the vacation rental during the stay. This guest violated all of the rules, beyond scaring me. I would never host this guest again and I would never trust Colleen! This is a true story and I think all hostesses should be aware and should protect themselves and know who is on and in their property at all times. All of my very best, Angela Jones

If you pay less, you’ll have lower quality when compared to other places, that’s for sure (but we went to NYC to explore the city, not to spend a week in a resort), however, it should never mean that you deserve to be treated badly. Not having as much conditions is okay, but having to deal with an arrogant host and pet’s pee and poop all over the place does not seem okay...
