I'm taking a look at 3 airbrushes: the Iwata HP-CS, Grex Genesis XGi, and the Harder & Steenbeck Infinity CR Plus. I'm giving my thoughts on the brushes and showcasing exactly what you get as you move up the price ladder.
I know this isn't a Let's Play video. If you saw my most recent channel news update, I mentioned I was going to expand beyond video game stuff. This video is kind of the first in that line. The video game stuff isn't going away, mind you. I'm just diversifying.

I just got my Iwata Eclipse in the mail yesterday and I love it. I seriously doubt I’ll ever go to a different airbrush. It serves me perfectly for what I need it to do. Not saying the other brushes aren’t worth having, everyone has different needs, but for me, the Eclipse HP-CS is perfect.

Excellent review. I have an Iwata HP-CS and recently bought a Grex Tritium TG .5mm. It also came with a fan spray cap for larger paint jobs. I really like the Grex.

I'd like to thank you for your evaluation of the Iwata, Grex and H&S airbrushes. I think your assessments are pretty accurate overall. I can also appreciate your reasons for having airbrushes with different needle sizes for different functions or tasks in your painting process. In particular and for obvious reasons (see below) I like your "pound for pound" evaluation of the Grex Genesis XGi5 and all the versatility and components that come in the box. There are other add on items or adapters that can change the performance of the Genesis XGi that neither the Iwata or H&S airbrushes can do. With regard to your "gripe" about the cuff on the nozzle cap (the part the magnetized nozzle and crown cap fit into) I completely understand your issue. Like anything there are pros and cons. The nozzle cap is actually the exact same part as that on the Grex Tritium Pistol Grip airbrushes which was on the market long before the introduction of the Genesis XGi. The Tritium originally had a more extremely tapered nozzle cap that came to but not around the magnetized nozzle or crown. Customers complained that the nozzle or crown cap would easily get bumped off. I personally never found that to be the case but we do listen to our customers. So, taking that information the part was re-engineered to incorporate the cuff. If you would like the more tapered original nozzle cap I can probably get you one. On another note, Grex does make an airbrush hold that will securely hold the airbrush. The green rungs are very secure. 450 × 301 - amazon.com I'd be interested in learning about a more direct comparison between the H&S airbrush with your current .16(?) and the Genesis XGi with a .3mm needle configuration. It's easy to get hooked on numbers when discussing one needle size versus another but it's more about how each airbrush manufacturer engineers their needle and fluid nozzles than the nomenclature that identifies their "size". The Genesis XGi can be reconfigured to a .2mm or a .3mm configuration through the TK-2 or TK-3 nozzle kits. When I'm asked about what is the best needle size for spraying paint, acrylic paints in particular I strongly recommend the .3mm configuration. For Grex, the .2mm needle configuration is better suited for those who spray inks or dyes rather than paint, media artists or illustrators in particular. When attempting to use paints, again acrylics in particular, with the .2mm needle tip dry issues tend to occur more frequently and more invasive cleaning is required correspondingly more often. When using a 3mm needle these problems tend to be far less of an issue and yet a fine line performance with paint can still be achieved. What causes the problem is the viscosity of the paint. Paint has a much higher viscosity than that of the ink. The airbrush is trying to do it's job but the paint is the main problem. In an effort to get paint to flow through the airbrush with out these issues the possibility of over thinning the paint is increased. With all that said I'd be curious to know how the Genesis with the .3mm configuration compares to the H&S with regard to tip dry issues as well as fine line performance. Regarding my comments about needle size and performance this comes from personal experience and feedback from customers. It's not about being critical of one airbrush versus another. I just want to be clear about that. All three airbrush companies are contemporaries and the consumer is getting a quality product purchasing any one of them. Again, I thank you for your evaluation and extend to you an invitation to contact me should you ever have question or problem with a Grex Airbrush product. My experience is that most of the paint back in the body gets there from back-flushing the airbrush (closing off the tip with your finger). Doing that doesn't really save any cleaning time anyway because you still have to clean the whole thing. Back-flushing loosens up some paint but it doesn't get all the paint out of any part of the airbrush and just makes more paint go into the body.

With a 0.4mm needle the Harder & Steenbeck works with any paint even if your paint is not thinned correctly. maintance is also extremly easy cause you can easily disesamble the whole thing and put it back together. In my opinion the Infinity CR Plus is the best Pro airbrush you can get that's worth the money.

Nice review. I would like to clarify a few things. The Iwata Hp-cs has a .35 needle /nozzle set. You need to replace the needle packing O-ring and probably all the other seals and O-rings in it after you soaked it several times in solvent. After that, use the Iwata needle packing O-ring screwdriver to reinstall and properly adjust the needle packing O-ring to prevent paint from getting past it and into the body. As for the "upgrade from the Hp-cs to either of these other airbrushes",. . . [Insert Burt Reynolds laugh here]. . .
@ethereal.airbrush
@ethereal.airbrush 3 жыл бұрын
Bro, you gotta replace or tighten your needle packing o-ring in the HP-CS when you get paint back-flowing into the trigger area. I replaced the solvent proof PFTE packing with the traditional rubber o-ring and experienced way less trouble. Hopefully 5 years later you figured this out haha

I have both the .35mm Eclipse HP-CS and the Infinity CR Plus with a .2mm setup. The Eclipse is a much better brush for beginners, its actually the best all around brush I've tried. The Infinity is near perfect for a fine detail brush, the only "drawback" I found is the trigger is a little rough when pulling back and forth constantly....I thought this would smooth out over time as I break it in but this has not been the case. Every Iwata I have used has a very smooth trigger action in comparison the Infinity. It's a shame because the Infinity is so close to perfection but let me down because of this design flaw. H&S needs to redesign their trigger mechanism.
@AndrevwZA
@AndrevwZA 7 жыл бұрын
The HP-CS comes standard as a 0.35. Did you change the parts? Easy to tell is the 0.35 has a two part nozzle. The 0.5 are normally on the HP-BCS. Why would you remove the silicone grips? Well, not everybody holds an airbrush the same so the rubber bits will be completely useless. You will actually see how much the Grex parts look like the ones on the H&S. The little arch on the lever, the cup designs and even some of the internals. You only need the tool on the Infinity once. After that you only tighten everything to finger tight. The H&S Evolution is basically the same brush as the Infinity. They just cut back on some of the adjustments parts. It has the same body, cups, needles and nozzles. A much better buy. Even their bottom of the range Ultra uses the same needles and nozzles.

You didn't mention that the Iwata has the needle nut cutout and that you can use that to pull the trigger even further back than you can with the normal trigger. This helps with cleaning the airbrush superfast, since it will just spit out all the paint at once.

My only problem with this review, is some of the pros or cons were more a matter of the needle size that MC has dedicated that particular airbrush and not so much specific to the airbrush. Apples to Apples comparisons are better with all else equal, which would be same size tips. For example, the talk about how unforgiving the HSI is, with a .15 tip compared to the Iwata .5 tip. HS has 2 in 1 versions that come with a .2/.4 or .15/.4 tip combo. So it would be interesting to hear how the .4 compared to the .5 tips. Maybe they aren't so unforgiving.

I have a H&S Infinity CR+ with a 0.2mm needle, and I find the spray nozzle is a little weak. It's made of brass instead of stainless steel, and I have managed to split the tip twice, which is an immediate replacement situation. Plus, as you say, if your paint isn't thinned perfectly, it can clog. So I use the H&S for fine work only, and have a Grex Genesis XGi3 with a 0.3mm needle for more general day-to-day work.

H&S Infinity cr+ but NOT with 0,15 mm needle. My recomendation is 2 in 1 with 0,2 mm and 0,4 mm needles. Iwata hp-cs with 0,35 mm is also amazing and most of painters would be pleased. The main reason I've chosen Infinity is price. Maybe in US or Australia Iwata is cheaper than H&S, but not in Europe. Not to mention needle and nozzle price.

What are you talking about? The H&S doesn't need any tools to disassemble to clean, you would never take the center section out of it, unless there is a problem. Unless your seals are bad, there would never be a reason to take it apart, other than just the needle and running a brush back through the body. Parts are no more expensive for them then other airbrushes, and as far as paint thinning.....Tamiya paints, 50/50 with thinner, sprays great. Vallejo Model Air....drop it in and spray.

As filthy as that Eclipse is, I can see why you have issues with it. ;) To get the paint that creeps into the needle passage out, after you do your end of session rinse: Fill the paint cup about half full with cleaner. Loosen the needle chuck. Pull the needle out an inch or so. Don't remove it! Work the needle back & forth, and you'll see the cleaner begin to blush. Spray or dump it out. Repeat. Tighten the needle chuck. Shoot another cup full of cleaner as a final rinse. You won't get another stuck needle.

If you're experiencing this paint back-flow issue you need to either tighten or replace the needle packing o-ring. If you get in there with a flashlight and you'll see it. Make micro adjustments with a 2mm flat head to make sure its just tight enough to hold the needle firmly and still move smoothly. Or remove it and check if it's damaged. I found the non solvent proof traditional O-Ring held up better than the solvent proof PTFE packing so I made that change knowing I'm only using acrylics and alcohol to clean. Cheers.

Harder and steenbeck 2 in 1 is the way to go so you don't have to worry about thinning paint in the beginning because it comes with a .4 also the fan cap is press fit and pulls off. Harder and steenbeck make a good cleaning kit that makes cleaning a breeze. There are good vids on tips and tricks. I myself started with a Neo from Iwata and it almost turned me off airbrushing because my hands are big and the tips are comically small.

Hey, just don't tight h&s so much when assembling and you don't need a special tool. Also, why not use 0.4mm needle if you have trouble with the small one? The seals are teflon, unlike in other ab's so they are actually much more tough (event acetone won't hurt it) then rubber ones.. replacement of all teflon seals costs less than 5€...

I use the H&S CR Plus. I use Tamiya acrylic paints usually XF series. I would like to know if you would share your thinning ratio for the H&S. The needle size is 0.15.
@MisterCrispyFL
@MisterCrispyFL 11 ай бұрын
Problem is, due to different paints and pigments and such, there isn't a standard "4 drops of ____, 6 drops of _____" kind of ratio. Best advice I can give is to get a small thing of whole milk and pour it into a clear glass cup. Swirl the milk around and look at how it leaves a film on the glass. Watch how it eventually settles back down. Get a good idea of how that consistency looks. If you make your paints match that same kind of consistency, you're golden. It'll be different every time so I work in small quantities in the paint pot of the airbrush and add small drops of airbrush thinner or flow improver and swirling/mixing until I see that same whole milk-like film on the sides of the brush's pot. Hope that helps!

I have a realtively small sparmax compressor with a small tank on it. nothing special is there anything i should consider when getting an Infinity Plus in terms of the compressor? I've seen a comment already stating this, but the H&S Infinity CR Plus with the .4mm needle will do you no wrong. I can get 4 hours straight airbrushing with little effort and I don't consider myself anything more than a amateur. I bought the H&S CR after failing and getting frustrated using cheaper 'affordable' low to mid entry brushes. The only one of the three I wouldn't recommend for beginners is the Infinity CR Plus in its super small needle size. The Grex and the Iwata would be absolutely fine for beginners especially in the 0.5 needle size (the Grex ultimately being the best bang for the buck, in my opinion).

At about 4 mins you’re complaining about how you get paint in places where seals should be preventing such from happening. Then you say you soak your airbrush in solvent for a few mins... so basically your messing up all the seals in your airbrush by doing this. Airbrushes were not made to be submerged in solvent. This is probably the reason you’re getting paint in that area and the needle is getting stuck in the first place.

What do you mean by "beginner"? I own a cheap chinese Airbrush and I'm super frustrated with the whole thing. The cleaning is freaking insane (the O-Ring to seal the thing has to be tight. But if you tighten it too much the o-ring get's destroyed. I destroyed 1 and the second one isn't looking good either. So I'm considering getting the Infinity CR Plus, as a 2 in 1 (with a .15mm needle and a .4mm needle). After watching your video I'm a bit torn though. I live in Germany so getting parts for an H&S is easier than for an Iwata. But now I'm not sure if I should get the Evolution CR Plus 2 in 1 (0.2mm needle and 0.4mm) or the Infinity CR Plus 2 in 1. The price difference is about 50€ (57$)

It would be a little more forgiving but not so much more. I have one with the .2mm and you do have to be very precise when thinning your paints. You can’t use the 40% off on airbrushes at hobby lobby. Not in store and not on their website. So don’t spread that misinformation.

You haven't tried to custom micron have you man you talk about fine detail it'll do an actual hairline and that h&s should be doing a hairline too since it's a 1.5 anyway I try to grex out at an airbrush show and I was not impressed with it at all I couldn't get enough to find line with it it must have had a big big need on tip in it because I couldn't force it to but my custom micron no no problem at all but I don't recommend a micron or any ultrafine airbrush to anybody that's inexperienced because you will have a hard time with it it's a far too sensitive airbrush if you don't have the experience to use it I'm in airbrushing for about 23 years and I've got the experience but I started using micron maybe 20 years ago and but I practice constantly I never let up on it and I got to where I could do the hairlines and the mini dagger strokes the very small ones very hard to do but you can do them if you practice that's what I always told my students I'll know if you practice between classes because you will make an improvement in that week if you practice that week anyway I'm not a fan of the Greg's but maybe I'll have to give it a second look after hearing you describe it I'll receive I'm not familiar with it enough to make you judgment call but I am familiar with the micron any other iwatas I've owned several of them and still do have them but I'm going to try this s&h Infiniti and see how it does I got it a good price I can't complain about that any airbrush you get that's good is going to be expensive my 1st micron was around 400 and something dollars and the second one I bought was close to 500 but you see that good brushes are worth the money and I'm going to reconsider that grex after hearing you what you said course I don't paint models I do custom artwork and I specialize in portraits you got to have a good airbrush to do portraits anyway May the living Lord Jesus Christ bless you and your endeavor to try to help people understand airbrush it's a wonderful form of art and and it's just got a reputation that was tarnished by t-shirt people who thought that was the only thing you could use the airbrush for so incorrect anyway may God bless you and your work

the only thing to hate about grex it their website, you know those websites you have to call or send inquiries to just to get the prices much less order? yeah.. one of those sites. rather just buy them used somewhere else oh and if you live outside the us or canada its probably a fuck-off, i don't think they shit worldwide but im not 100% sure

I had never an issue with H&S, are you sure you have not an issue? may be some problem from the factory?... it is strange for me to hear this, I never had an issue when spaying. Check if everything is ok, may be you received one with some problem.

Does nobody else find the triggers on the H&S brushes very "rough" in comparison to all Iwatas...there's a "metal grinding" sensation that comes and goes. Definitely find the Iwata triggers much smoother when drawn back.

i own 2 H&S Evolutions, set up wih 0,4 and 0,2 needles (one of them bouhght it used in ebay for 60 Euros). And i have an H&S Infinity (birthday present) with 0,15 needle. I dont really find them too hard to clean, on the contrary,... but again, i never owned an iwata,,, (only a chinese clone or „Chiwata“)... here in Germany an Iwata costs more than H&S, so there is no point to get one,... all in all, i dont agree with your review one bit... you can not compare a 0,15 against a 0,5 needle and say its unforgiving, My HS Evolution with 0,4 needle is very forgiving,,,, and you can get a 0,6 needle if you want, with that you can spray honey on your bread if you like... and the cleaning of the H&S is very easy, dont think there is an easier airbrush to clean,,, you can disasemble those things very quickly without any extra tools.
