Those ground air starters can start both engines at the same time on a 737. Years ago I was flying on a 737 where they started off the ground cart and they started both engines at the same time, a lot quicker than the traditional start off the APU. That airport also didn't use jetways so there was no pushback the aircraft was able to pull away from the ramp without a pushback.

They're called "ground carts" --powered by diesel or gas turbines (not jet engines)--which supply compressed air for the engine's air turbine starter, plus electrical power. Note: once one engine is running, you can perform a "cross-bleed" start to start the other engine. You can see the airplane is being pushed back with only one engine running, so they'll do a cross-bleed start later on.

When we did air starts, the air cart did not supply electrical, just air pressure to start the engine . The ground power from the jetway had to be attached until the engine started, and the pilot would give clearance to disconnect ground power.

@@dennisvijverbergbrakesrele6098 yep. For both weight and aerodynamic reasons, Concorde's designers wanted to avoid having a separate horizontal stabilizer (like Boeing's design) for trim, or adding canards (like TU144) for stability; so they decided to use active fuel-transfer to both trim and stabilize the aircraft while in flight. The weight of a APU would've comprised that design strategy, so they decided to leave it out, altogether. This was after evaluating APU designs from Turbomecha and Garrett, at the insistence of PanAm.

I think you'll find those vehicle are actually further away than they look and driving along marked roadways, so no real problem. If the aircraft is on a normal stand starting up for departure, then the engines will only run up to ground idle prior to pushback so fairly limited thrust in the efflux and the roadways would be positioned accordingly. If higher powered runs we're going to happen, the aircraft would normally be moved to a clearer running pan or area or the road behind temporarily closed. Ex line-swine and ramp-tramp😁

Depending on aircraft ETOPS is not a requirement for ETOPS. With A350,B777 and B787 APU is not a requirement to fly ETOPS required flights. But it for example in this case limits the ETOPS flight to 180 minutes, if aircraft is a 270 minutes ETOPS aircraft it will need to be down graded.

An APU inop is no problem for normal flight, you are only restricted to 180 ETOPS with the A350. For restart of the engine the airspeed of the aircraft is used to restart, if I am not mistaken they will have to desend to an surtain flight lvl and fly a surtain airspeed, windmilling the engine will get the turbine above start rotation. And possibly restart with the bleed air of the other engine.

It is surely inconvenient if the APU is inop, but jetliners just fly fine without them. The A350 has two generators per engine. One engine can supply the airconditioning system with air without any problems. But it makes ground operations at time harder, especially when also ground equipment isn’t working either.

@dennisvijverbergbrakesrele6098
@dennisvijverbergbrakesrele6098 10 ай бұрын
Hello there, if APU is inoperative we use an external power plant for the electrical power. Air conditioning come form the yellow hoses attached to the gate. Then for start air and start unit the provides the pressure/flow to rotate the starter. The external power has two switches in the cockpit (there are two connection), the airconditioned air flows in the aircraft unregulated (no control or indication in the cockpit). For the start air the aircraft can sense that the pressure comes from an external source ( APU and engines are off) and configuraties the valve in the system so engines can be started. Hope it clarifies.
