Love Farnborough, spent time there when I was a kid. Best experience at the airshow was the Vulcan bomber fitted with the Concorde motors Olympus, I believe. Low pass along runway.

Probably the loudest plane I have ever heard. As the engines spooled up it just got louder and louder and just when you thought that was it, the pilot would release the brakes and really open the taps. Your ears would start crackling and you would feel your guts vibrate.

Not the content I was expecting, but entertaining none the less. Dutchie here. KLM has waved out the 747 too, after Covid. PH-BFV and PH-BFW last flew on october 25, 2020. Both have been sold to Longtail Aviation. Martinair Cargo, a subsidiary of KLM Group, still flies 4 Jumbos in Freight config, three leased from KLM (PH-CKA, CKB and CKC) and one in ownership (PH-MPS). Great to see Betty is still going strong. I have a soft spot for her.

Years ago I worked in the aircraft manufacture industry in Australia and we built the intermediate and shear tied wing ribs for the 757. It was an interesting process that started with an F shaped 7075 alloy chord that was stretched then heat treated and then milled in to shape by a five axis milling machine. We even made parts for the Boeing 929!!!

The A380 is an amazing machine. We were lucky enough to fly them to and from Australia. When you take off and land it feels like you are barely even moving!

We've a good spot here in Melbourne for doing that, and I've been doing it for many decades. It's sort of a shame (just for the plane watchers) that planes don't roar like they used to. Another part of the experience that's been engineered away is wingtip vortices, which got 'fixed' by the upturned winglets. It used to be that about 20 seconds after the aircraft passed, the vortices would reach ground level and swirl and whistle around the plane watchers - a very strange thing it was!

The 380's wing flex is nuts! We went on honeymoon to Oz & on the way out got a 747 on one leg & a 380 on the way back. Sat just over the back of the wing on the ground looked like a large silver hill, once we were airbourne it flexed so much I could see the wingtip! I like the smaller jets with the winglets, nice design!

I saw the A380 prototype flying in the South of France when it was still in final development/testing. It looked so big in the sky, messing with the whole “very small/far away thing”. Now I’m under on of the main flight paths for Boston Logan. There are two A380s a day - a BA flight from/to Heathrow and a Lufthansa from/to Munich. Sometimes they’re overhead, but even from a distance they still look like flying villages.

Birmingham wa my local airport for most of my working life and I used to do the A380 flight to Dubai every three months on a Saturday afternoon. It's certainly a 'fun' place to land when there's a south-westerly gale blowing across the runway!

I live on a flight path so i hear and see planes fairly often, but I'm not fully au fait with the different types of aircraft these days because unlike when i was a child, a lot of them tend to look the same. I recall the days of the 747, Concorde, the DC10 and Tristar and the 707, 727 and DC9. These days i like looking at the different liveries because some of them are really pretty. To me, seeing an A380 in flight, landing or taking off is just as momentous as seeing Concorde when that was in service.

I was born in Sheldon, and have many happy memories of that park, though I don't remember it being called a 'country park' then! The A380 doesn't look that big from a distance, but if you stand near one, you realise that they are absolutely gargantuan aircraft!! Funny my wife and I stayed in Birmingham to watch Peter Hook and the Light last week then we took caddy van to the Elan Vally to camp. I was driving past Newtown thinking Hubnut country! Kept a look out for tiny Japanese cars doing tremendous speeds but you must have stayed at home that day.

A couple of weeks ago when I was on a Digbeth coach station run, I did see the A380 climbing out over the M5. I've seen it a few times, including F-WOWW on one of it's trial flights when I saw it emerging from the murky skies above Avonmouth, after she did a fly pass of Filton I also did the Toulouse factory tour several years ago. I grew up round there, spent many hours in that park as a kid, occasionally watching the runway too. Our house was right in the flight path for the airport, the planes came in ridiculously low, always looked like they were going to clip the roofs of the houses on our street.

I remember when the A380’s were under development. I went to Iceland in holiday and our flight was slightly delayed as a grey A380 was landing in Rekyavik airport ahead of us. It had taxied up when we landed. They were testing high wind speed landings and takeoffs.

Love this. I'm quite an avgeek as well. I'm particularly fond of 777s, and especially when they're powered by those massive GE90 engines. Not only do they give the 777 a "muscular" look, being proportionately "too large" for the aircraft, they sound absolutely magnificent.

I used to drive past Kemble airport quite often. During the pandemic I remember seeing many 747's lined up for retirement. A very sad experience knowing that they would be broken up. Hopefully some may be preserved and available for flight but the electronics are obsolete in many areas so continued flight may be difficult, the same happened with the Vulcan.

I do like a bit of plane action. Getting stuck in traffic with the coach on the M25 in bank holiday traffic afforded an hours entertainment including a BA 380 coming in to land right overhead. Passengers weren’t overly impressed but it broke up the monotony for me. Nice having RAF Leeming on my doorstep too especially since the coach company I do a bit of driving for backs onto the base. Wash ramp out back provides a nice, private viewing platform 👍

Wauw that is a big plane. My appartement is on the twelfth floor right smack in the flight path of Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. I can practically touch the planes ✈️ coming in. A few weeks ago I heard the Dutch Dakota Association’s DC3 coming in but didn’t bother to look to my regret because I later heard it was her last flight. She is no longer allowed to fly because of environmental reasons. Seen her before as wel as 747’s and A380’s they just pass by my window. 👍🏻👍🏻😋😃

I've done many a SYD-LHR-SYD round trip over the years and in this bloke's opinion, the A380 beat everything else hands-down (and I include various 744s in that). You can keep your 777s by the way, cramped and NOISY in cattle class.

Ive flown on A380’s many times when I was working overseas in a certain hot and sandy place. Used to fly from Manchester with Emirates usually on a Sunday afternoon. From a passengers point of view they are just like any other jet. I couldn’t never tell what kind of jet I was in to be honest. On take off you could watch the view on the seat back TV from a camera mounted on the tail which was quite interesting.

I've been on a few A380s since my sister moved to Queensland. I love them. Great for a long haul, especially upstairs ;-) That said I went on a 787 this year, and had noticeably easier jet-lag when I got to Oz. On the 737 vs A320, I'm team Airbus. Much smoother. 737s seem to change direction more sharply, which can be less comfortable.

12:20 - my wife came up with a mixed metaphor - I'm torn between and rock and a hard place. Ouch... My worst experience was 2 go arounds and London City Airport when some storms had rolled in. If we'd missed the last one we'd not be landing in London. Great pilot 🙂 He did get applause from a plane full of British - that's something!! From memory a very small plane - Embraer I think.

The 380 is the best plane to fly in from an economy passenger's point of view. The 350 is close behind followed by the 787... All the rest...have lower cabin pressures and ..well just feel old and I avoid them for 10 hour plus flights if possible. Like old cars I do like the older planes having good memories of flying DC8s 9s and 10s and the original 747s and original 737s..but in those days Auckland to Heathrow was about 5 flights.

DC9 between Canberra and Sydney was a stirring experience: I was a very nervous flyer in those days, and the take off felt as though it was at an impossible angle. Also travelled in the back of a DC8 a few times: very long, and I swear I saw the fuselage twist in mild turbulence.

The 757 was a great plane, a staple of charter airline fleets through the 90s and beyond. I flew on them a few times with Monarch, Britannia etc for ski holidays from Bristol and Birmingham back in their heyday. Birmingham Airport is home to the company that is commissioning one of the RAF’s new Boeing 737 Wedgetail AWACS planes coming into service… there are some KZbin videos about it….

We had the a USAF KC-135 at SYD airport a couple of days ago - the KC-135 is the Military version of the 707 and is used for in-flight refuelling. Lot's of coverage on Sydsquad channel.

@@alpcns You actually get a takeoff and landing as their mission to escort a couple of F-22s was cancelled mid-flight so the end of the stream sees it land at SYD again. I believe they finally departed 24hrs later and presumably the 2 F-22s are now back in Guam with their fuel buddy. The F-22s were over for an event in August up at Williamtown airport. Presumably the runway there is too small for a fully loaded KC-135.

Fun bit of plane-spotting! The A-380 is certainly impressive; there's a plane-spotting video, taken one snowy night, w/ quite a few of these beasts taking off from Heathrow; almost spooky-looking...Kind of hard to imagine that they're retiring the 747s; when I began at Boeing in 1988, the 747-400 was still in flight-testing, to be first delivered to the now-merged w/ Delta, Northwest Airlines, in January, 1989. The planes are certainly much quieter nowadays; even the A-320s no longer make the characteristic howl when passing overhead (said to be from the aerodynamics/acoustics of the wing tank fuel vents); if an MD-80/90 goes over the house now, it sounds like a fighter jet. The best-sounding old-school planes to me were the earlier 747s (P & W JT-9D-equipped), the DC-10s (GE CF-6), and the Lockheed L-1011 (RR RB211), although the "topper", to me, is the early C5 Galaxy, w/ the GE TF39s...

Mr Hubnut flashed on screen that Betty had gone through 400,000 litres of fuel, more than the capacity of the A380. Given that the car has about 400,000 km on it, or a quarter million miles, I'd consider that galloping consumption at 1km per litre. Time for antibiotics and an inhaler me old son. Probably Seabrook arithmetic error. Noted comparable number errors before which a moment's thought at the physical improbability of it would not have been voiced. 40,000 litres, yes, Betty's a drinker and that's about 25 mpg Imperial average.

A thought on the "minimal liveries", it's very likely to be them weight-saving, because the paints and stickers and all that add up, so for smaller planes or short flights, every bit of weight they can shave off is extra profit, I think it's why American Airlines used to just go in the noodles with their shiny bare metal look, less paint, less weight... :)
