Those are «bump caps» and they aid with protection.

@@FlightSimulatorXATC Bump cap vs hard hat depends on the type of work being done, as well as the location/site (both look very similar and both have the short brim). It is kept short for improved visibility and to not be a hindrance when working in tight/close up spaces.
