When I first heard you mention being an engineer, I thought it was software engineering, but you're just a full on tinkerer. It's funny how having to make money to make a living is what keeps us from living our dreams and working our passions... Unless your job way back when, was building planes, than you did actually live your dream and work your passion.

This kind of reminds me of something I did for the first time recently. My car's fuel and brake lines rusted out so I just replaced all the rubber lines with new ones, and replaced the steel lines with copper/nickel lines that hopefully will never rust away. On some level it is quite scary to do this compared to say, brake pads or a fuel filter, as you're bending and also flaring all the lines yourself, and they're not just factory made parts you pop in and replace. It takes a lot of confidence in your own work, and I too did some flow tests/etc before actually hooking everything up and getting on the road.

3 things that typically cause a fuel issue. A) forgetting to add fuel before flight B) clogged fuel filters or clogged lines or hole in gas tank, fuel line freezes. Broken gauges that read incorrectly. C) not sitting down & planing ahead of time amount of fuel “needed” making a cross country flight. Running out of fuel Mid Flight.

Isn't this assuming the failure mode of the fuel pump is fail-safe? In a car at least, when the fuel pump goes it actively starves the engine (although I don't think it has gravity on its side much). The other thing you have to assume is that the fuel pump failure is detected before take off. If think that's why you see a lot of people throw the brakes on and ramp the engine - you can't fake your way out of that. As long as the runway is long or there is a field the other side, the risk is pretty low anyway on take-off engine failure. Just don't do take-offs facing mountains or off the side of cliffs!

Hi Scooby, I am curious about your fuel flow design. You mentioned that if the fuel pump failed, the fuel should still flow via gravity through the fuel lines to keep the aircraft flying safely. If this is the case, why have a fuel pump at all? Why not get rid of the pump so you have one less thing to worry about malfunctioning. I sort of feel my question is silly and I am sure I am missing something crucial in the design. BTW, I have much respect for all of your different areas of knowledge. Respectfully, Z

I did not know carbureted airplanes have gravity feed fuel lines. Maybe you explained it in another video, but was there a reason you went carbureted vs EFI? Being younger I find it the opposite of a lot of people your age, in that I find carburetors basically voodoo to work on and honestly don't totally understand them (I mean, I understand the principle of engine vacuum pull fuels through a tiny jet hole and atomizes it into the engine) and am more comfortable with a traditional EFI setup. Newer direct injection is definitely weird, especially in that most run a mechanical injector pump separate to the in tank fuel pump. Was your rationale partially that with a carb and gravity feed you'd never need to be reliant on a fuel pump as a point of failure? I'm assuming as well this engine has a mechanical fuel pump driven by the cam, and not an electric one?

@@scooby1961 Not that I've ever seriously considered planes much (have considered getting into unpowered gliders, though...) but one thing that's always fascinated me is Mazda rotary powered aircraft. Rotary engines from an engineering perspective always seemed like the coolest things to me. Obviously there's tons of disadvantages but they sound awesome and are so small. Was there a reason you went with the engine you did over a car engine? I've seen all sorts of car engines in aviation use when looking up tuning information. One engine in particular I remember is the Nissan VG30, when I was looking up information about Z31 and Z32 300ZXs. Is it something to do with FAA inspection related stuff/regulations?

So, is this to make sure there is enough fuel flow during high demand from the engine? I had an old lawnmower and the guy who sold it to me said it didn't work. It turned out the tank wasn't high enough from the engine and gravity wasn't filling the carburettor quickly enough for demand. The stupid thing had a very small float chamber. Again, poor design because the tank was in the original position. I had to modify it, and suddenly I had a working engine.
