When they think it’s a pilot deviation, ATC just says it, often sounding annoyed. They don’t waffle about with how it’s a procedure and they have to write it up this particular way etc etc. It seems pretty clear ATC in this case doesn’t feel it’s actually a pilot deviation.

To all regarding pilot deviation: The controller MUST tell them that a POSSIBLE deviation has occurred. Yes, POSSIBLE. That is not ACTUAL deviation. Just following standard procedures, then they talk, maybe a small investigation, maybe some new guidelines that say that do less 'risky' maneuvers in bad weather and snow, like do not take sharp turns, maybe if unclear (new pilot in area), use follow-me and so on. This will like be just a small tick in the box of making safe aviation even more safe.

Based on FFA order JO 7210.632, the controller was required to report the incident, or otherwise action can “be taken as a result of failure to report”. Per the order: “All employees must ensure that the following occurrences…are reported.” Which includes: “A-6.f Any instance in which the aircraft unintentionally maneuvers off the runway/taxiway.”

@@jort93z 1st of all, intentionally??? Do you think they intentionally taxied the a/c off into the grass???? 2nd, read what I said. Big difference between a P/D and an a/c incident or accident. The pilot did not get an instruction wrong, did nothing to get a "pilot deviation". He did not read back something wrong, did not misconstrue a clearance, he simply drove the aircraft into the grass on his own. He chose the route. That is a incident/accident. It gets REPORTED via us, meaning ATC. How do I know this, I have been doing this since 1985. Just actually read what I previously said.

For the “perfect” observers making negative comments, the view from the cockpit is limited; airports can and do have different sized taxiways all with a maximum size aircraft capacity in weight and turning radii, add a bit of language challenges and situations like this one do occur. Thankfully not fatal as the recent missed instructions causing a crash in Japan. Recall the fatal Comair crash in Lexington, KY as the pilots attempted to depart in a closed not illuminated too short runway. It’s tough out there. Be kind.

Typically, VASAviation doesn't include Airport Ops vehicles in the videos with ground controllers, so when Ops 1 came on at 0:38 I was a bit confused. Then I saw all that snow. No way is this the pilot's fault; the ground is absolutely covered. There is a little bit of a delineation showing where the taxiway is, but it's really small and we have the benefit of a still picture taken from ground level. I hope the pilots aren't too hard on themselves and won't get reprimanded any serious way for this. I think that airport just needed more snow plows.
@Raptor747

Ultimately, an incident like this is useful for providing data and insight into ways to improve safety and operations across the board. At worst, there's some kind of training deficiency that the airline will need to correct, but this isn't pilot error. The important part is that no one was hurt and the plane itself wasn't significantly damaged.

While I appreciate how helpful the controller was trying to be to the pilots, more standard phraseology for the taxi instructions would have been nice, especially when he initially gave them instructions to cross a runway. Runway entrance/crossing clearances always need to be 100% unambiguous and you could tell from their responses that the pilots were not clear on whether he was actually clearing them to enter the runway at first or not. Thankfully, they spoke up to clarify. Granted, I don't think that had any impact at all on the actual incident here, but nevertheless something that it seems like LAN needs to work on.

I've never seen the cockpit view in the winter but from other high profile vehicles snow blindness can be a factor. It's difficult to judge 3D surfaces when everything is white. In short it's hard to tell where the edge on the ground you can easily see the vertical snow surfaces not so much from above. I think everyone handled this pretty well. I think the deviation will be a nothing burger. He missed a turn at a "visitor" sign. An error, but more than likely he didn't see it. That means that that type of aircraft may not regularly fly into that airport, in which case it would be understandable that they don't have the equipment handy. Oftentimes charter aircraft won't physically pull into a gate anyway, so will have no expected need to be towed/pushed back at all the next day. I remember that I was on a Delta regional jet that diverted to a smaller airport because of weather, and if I recall, we had to wait for them to borrow the tow-bar from American Eagle to push us back from the gate. They can't just go ahead and pull it out. This is classed as an aircraft recovery, and will need a bit more than a tug and bar. Even 3" in the dirt will put so much stress on the gear, it would need replacIng. Proper recovery techniques need to be employed. The crew will definitly be having tea and biscuits with the Chief Pilot.

What happened to the marshall?
@AndyWhite
@AndyWhite Жыл бұрын
The marshal in this scenario I believe is stood at the head of the parking stand to turn them onto and stop the aircraft in its final parking spot. They aren't involved in the taxi. A leader vehicle (such as Ops 1) could have been useful to help them maintain the centreline though.

Confused what the deviation is for. Besides missing the ramp entrance, he followed all ATC instructions

It's just to let pilots know because they put the plane off the pavement the incident is going to be investigated. They are required to say possible pilot deviation

Technically it is a pilot deviation when he failed to make the turn as instructed. Normally when this happens which isn’t all that uncommon, the plane doesn’t end up in the grass later. Unless a pilot is just really bad at following instructions or causes an issue, then it’s rare to give a deviation to them for poor taxi skills but when you exit the surface area, then reports will have to be done. I highly doubt the FAA and FSDO will do anything to the pilots, the company on the other hand may have something to say to the pilots. Missing the turn is a pilot deviation. Taxing off the taxiway is an incident.

@@renataavgeri1132 yes the 737s are too low to the ground with not much height clearance, trying to extend the fuselage and banging bigger engines on is not good in my opinion.

To be fair, ATC should've given them an advisory that taking C1 would've worked better, considering their type being an a320. ATC really should have made him turn on C1 if there was no logical reason to go Bravo again. note: Again, I don't really know the entire situation but from this video, that's what I can tell. Did I miss anything? Not sure

Man, you don’t want to try to drag a plane out of there by the nose gear, especially if there are pax on board. I don’t understand why he hooked that turn so tight in the first place. A lot of guys aren’t aware of where their mains are.
