Now he is a modest and unassuming man. Exactly the type of person you want responsible for carrying nuclear bombs.

Well worth the wait, so much was said, Ate is such a nuanced speaker, I fear you slightly missed his comment that after 1000 hours of jet flight, (Super E, T45) the Rafale's thrust surprised him. Still a brilliant interview, well done, from the problems of specialists transitioning to multirole, to his slight disappointment at Rafale being a bit overqualified in the Iraq war, his satisfaction at having repaid his civic debt by using his training in combat, problems with small deck operations and his brilliant airshow anecdote, your interview helped a brilliant speaker shine. So grateful you did this, slightly concerned when he mentioned his stroke, wish him well and look forward to more from these wonderful aviators.

The later variant Rafale upgrades are one of the only truly sensor-fused avionics suites currently in service, outside of the F-22A and JSF. Most other fighters still have federated systems with high pilot workload that haven't leveraged supercomputing banks to combine all the sensor data into unified battlespace SA display for the pilot. I always find the French and Swedish fighter cockpit designs refreshing since they approach them quite differently.

ATE is a very enthusiastic subject! And the Rafale is one of the best looking fighters today. The cockpit is so minimalistic! Good stuff.

Super sympa ! Fascinating the comment about having five different platforms and each having experts in that field manning them 60 years ago... Where now it is all on one man!

One thing most people don't realize is that the air to ground camera they use to identify and get gps cordence with makes bvr possible. Because unless its like the first day of the war and everyone knows that to my left, right, behind are all friendlys and 12 oclock is only enemy aircraft. Under all other times you have to either IFF or visual identity them. And the very powerful camera allows you to identify the enemy from many miles then use radar missiles. In nam the F-4 had a 10x scope in the back seat to help with identification friend or foe. Its a major thing that isnt talked about.

Fabulous. I was looking forward to "Ate's" interviews and I have to say I wasn't disappointed. It would be interesting to see if there would be any chance of a Q&A . Well done Mike another excellent piece

Long range optic with dual Sensor (visible + IR), gears to point the sensor around + second panoramic sensor (horizon to horizon) for low & fast. On top of that you have hardened hard drive to store the data and data link system to transmit the pictures in flight to ground station or aircraft carrier so specialist can start to work on pictures before the plane land.
