Hahaha, has anybody noticed the great harmony that occurs at 2:22 when someone in the audience screams a G in excitement while Chris Potter is resting on a Bb?

yeah, that sounds like a saxophone high note!!! Probably the best two tenors nowadays (with the permission of Rollins, who is still alive)

I thought that it was the saxophone screaming, but then realized Potter wasn't playing that scream, and looked at Lovano and it wan't him either.

Killer...the horns are so into it, but rhythm section is sick too - what great bass & piano solos by Francois Moutin & Ron Assaf, and great Kendrick Scott. Dude who thinks Lovano can't play is real clueless - sounding like Alex Hoffman on Wayne Shorter.

some dudes don't understand dynamics. Lovano was literally having a rhythmic conversation with the percussionist. and you never of the tonal center, that solo was impressive

I don't really blame Roy for getting off toward the end of his solo. I've played with Lovano enough to know that sometimes I forget what planet I'm on let alone exactly where in the form I am. I usually just want to quit blowing so I can hear him play some more.

A criticism of many jazz artists, from both others and one-self, is being too much, "in your own head." Check out what happens at 1:20-1:22 in this awesome video. Potter plays a wonderful altissimo minor line starting on beat 4 of measure 6 of the second A section over the Bb minor. Chris shakes his own head 'no' several times at the same moment Lovano and the crowd react very positively with verbal "Ohs!" Be careful with self judgement. Why play real improvised jazz if it isn't to create energy and enjoyment with and among other people? Chris is totally killing and shaking his head no several times during his solo. He would increase the flow and energy exchange if he would avoid the negative nod and/or be more open to the increase. He doesn't have anything to fear, it's not like he'll get lost or play something lame. In contrast, notice how Lovano releases the mouthpiece during rests and moves affirmatively with his body language. He's freed up and plays tons of creative ideas, especially his time feel, while strolling with Kendrick. GREAT STUFF!

Yes, the pianist took the first A again. It's remarkable how the entire band shifted pretty seamlessly and acted like everything was fine. This speaks to how "in the moment" they are and their adroit professionalism.

You know 🤔 contemplating these videos for a while, I’ve come to a possible (debatable) conclusion, that the rhythm section here whilst undeniably killing, aren’t really good at supporting a player like Joe. Potter has a great way of getting inside everyone’s else’s blood stream, but joe is just ...doing his thing, and is like - you can hang or you can’t...ya dig? Like these guys are playing their quarter note feel way too straight and gridded for joes thing to really sing. He’s thinking abstract - felt like a weak decision for the piano and bass to drop out for joe. And you can tell he does know the straight thing, - moment when he tells Kendrick clear where the time is, but these motherfuckers are getting in his way!

somebody who thinks lovano is killing cant have a serious clue why potter is so good. lovano and potter two complete different things. not much change we would end up in the same bar listening to music. what you consider music is what i hear as pretending to play jazz. when you can really hear the nature of jazz is as clear and as simple as let say gravity.
@dutchla
@dutchla 12 жыл бұрын
but lovano pretends gravity doesn't excist, and thinks he gets away with his pretending because hardly anybody hears, which is mostly true for most people. but a few do hear and recognize his nonsense.

lovano is such a clown, he has no real clue how to play jazz. just big pretending on all sides. no idea why potter, who is a real and superb player on all levels teams up with such a character.
