That’s great, thank you. Good to get the figures out of the loft and into the daylight

Nice work. Since retiring I have been making up 'toy soldier sets' to give away, the three things I am asked for tend to be WW2, Sci-Fi and 'Knights and Knaves' but the Sherwood castle kit is no longer available (the whole idea of 'pocket money prices' seems to have gone as the industry switched to 'merchandising' for kids and 'nostalgia models' for those with fond memories and deep pockets) but I did pick up some Sheriff of Nottingham figures and Robin Hood figures on e-bay to include in sets for the sake of my own nostalgia. One chap built a huge model of the Battle of Tewksbury in 1971 using these sets ( 2,000 figures all or mostly from the Airfix ‘Robin Hood’ and ‘Sheriff of Nottingham’ collections with a lot of modifications to replicate specific characters and all hand painted with the livery of the household it was to belong to). His model is in Tewksbury museum but part of it got 'lost' (they loaned it to a 'trendy' museum who just hacked a chunk off to fit with their feng shui or some such). What is left is still impressive however, although part of the story was lost (hours of work and years of research just 'disposed' of). Visiting it is on my bucket list, I still have the Airfix magazine with the article on how it was done.

I remember your comment from Airfix panzers about the toy soldier sets. It is a shame that the sets are not available at pocket money prices anymore. Hopefully our shared enthusiasm will spread the word on our enjoyable hobby. I always enjoy seeing dioramas in museums telling a story so much work but I’m sure they inspire an interest which is what it’s all about

So we must be around the same age - the flower pot men age😀 Two of my most favorite sets! Played with them for years. Errol Flynn - then we need to remember Claude Rains as well. Really liked the Sherriff set. Same as High Chaparral and Tarzan of course (used as Zulus😀) I love your work - and your videos with historical background are a good idea as well (see Hadrian’s Wall).

Yes I am 60 this year, how did that happen! Airfix figures and models are a big part of my life. I do like to set them out in a scene and tell a story. Thank you for your comment. It’s very supportive. There will be more to come

@@grahamhurst4613 same indeed. 👍 Wonderful. I just read your other post, the Foreign Legion Fort, I really look forward to seeing that video. Thanks!

I had all this kit as a kid. Unfortunately, they never survived the trip to Australia and were a part of the things purloined from the stuff we brought with us. I also lost a Roman fort, soldiers and Britons, the cavalry fort and the desert fort. But hey, we should have known. It was originally a penal colony.

Oh no! My videos are meant to bring back good memories. I hope you managed to replace them. I have young relatives who have moved to Australia 🇦🇺 and they are really happy. Thanks for watching

You missed the Richard Greene tv series that was repeated through out the 1960s and early 70s. That was my introduction to Robin Hood.

On the original box art the Robin Hood is such a good likeness for Errol Flynn. It’s such a great set of figures

I am in the middle of painting this very castle. Purchased off ebay 20 years ago for my kids (and me hahah). Kids are grown up so I am going to rekindle modeling. Any tips on how to paint? Mine if the brown plastic one. Have done a see through very thin white wash on it so far...its going to need a few. I am not a great painter so any advice welcome. I also like the bases you have on them. I even have some of these trees!! Bellona yes?
@grahamhurst4613 Жыл бұрын
The trees are by Merit, they did a range of railway accessories. The bases are from Hobby Heaven, I found them on Amazon. I still use Humbrol enamel paints. For the castle I started with a dark grey then dry brushed with lighter coats. The numbers were 32 27 64. I hope you enjoy your project. Thanks for your comment
