Another great video and it looks like another great tank from Airfix. I was lucky enough to meet Joe Ekins back in the 1990's when he came to visit our model club in Northampton a great guy who said he was just doing his job. Keep up the great work.

I thought the machine gun in the hull was removed and a blanking plate was installed on the firefly for extra ammunition stowage yet the instructions tell you to install a hull machine gun.

Right, I remember the Italian army had some Hybrid tanks in the'50s, but normally Fireflies didn't have any hull mg, they've only four men.

Step 44 onwards show the blanking plate which is included on the sprue so just a fault with the step 43 drawing.

And the funny thing is faking your standard Sherman to look like a Firefly actually made you a bigger target! The Germans soon came to realize that the Firefly could take out a Panther or Tiger just as easily as either of them could take out a Sherman so both the German tank gunners and anti-tank crews would always try to knock them out first!

I fondly remember the first few months of 2020, and its a long story. SO, i live in belgium and model shops are a rare sight here, but there is one in a city about 30 min away. Its not really a shop its just a dude with 2 rooms full of kits and his wife as caissiere. I would think about what i'd buy all week until saturday when i would sit on the bus for an hour to get there and spend 2 hours there and buy a kit. I'd always try to get as much out of my pocket money as i could. UNTILL march 15'th the last time i went there. I was alone looking at the shelves, the only customer at the checkout and the only one on the bus home. And ever since then i've had a big model shop shaped hole in my hart. Anyway i want that firefly.

so i found your chanel through the top opening/folding box. but when i looked at my small stash i realised i had no top opening boxes to try it on. so if i win i promise that that will be the first thing i do! so story time: as a kid i went to this toy store and there were these revell kits and i was just mesmerized by their boxarts. i didnt build models then i came for lego but i would always look at those boxarts, because they always told this cool story. but the box i thought was the coolest was this round tank called a sherman firefly. but when i started building models the firefly was gone so i never built it. so i bought a corsair one off the coolest planes. cheers!

Thats such a great story. I think top opening boxes are gonna become the norm for airfix.. exery new kit so far has been with that style of box.. Corsair is a great plane to build..

Hello, nice review on a great small subject. Just asking, the pre-assembled tracks are "slide" molded as new Trumpeter, or standard as S-Model? Are the tracks are two different models? Regards, Rodrigo
@MOS6510Models4 жыл бұрын
Yes they look like two sets of tracks.. the pre assembled ones are just the T51 block type... the Link and length is the T62 type track.. which is for the firefly

Once upon a time Airfix used to do their own OO Gauge (1/76th Scale) Ready to Run Railway stuff, so a lot of kits were done to tie in with it. It's very long, complicated, convoluted and sometimes confusing story.
@MOS6510Models4 жыл бұрын
Theres a lot of history in how and why 1/76 and oo scale is in the range.. Theres some link to esci kits in the mix as airfix tried to buy them

The trick to rubber tracks is using tamiya regular cement, the stuff in the orange bottle. Once dried for a total of 24 hours I like to take a hot screwdriver and melt the 4 tiny spins down, it doesnt help for bonding much but it makes it look nice.

The other tankers always used to know who was a crew of a sherman firefly as they always had no hair below the beret line because when the shell was being ejected from the gun the sulphur being released would burn there hair off

Great video again mate! Well the Firefly took it's name from it's big a$$ muzzle break and the flash it produced when fired. It proved to be so valuable against the German cats after D-day that it was being literally hunted by the Germans, making its crews actively trying to camouflage the 17-pounder gun in order to look like a normal 75mm gun. The funniest I've seen was a picture where the tip of the barrel and the nuzzle break were painted a curious tone of black for that reason. Nice try by Airfix, took them a while, hehe, but I'd really like to build one as it's my favourite M4 variant.

That Tiger kit has the number 007 on it, it belongs to Michael Wittmann, the famous Tiger ace. The Firefly kit boxart hints a destroyed Tiger in the background, because Michael Wittmann and 4 of his crew was killed by a Firefly, which is probably a subtle nod by Airfix lol Also the second decal of the firefly belongs to the Joe Ekins' Firefly that allegedly landed the shot which killed Wittmann.

The Sherman Firefly..... well I could copypaste the wikipedia item now, but I‘ll try to be a bit more elegant there and use my own knowledge..... so the Sherman Firefly was basically the british Sherman of the (hopefully) known american M4. The british literally took that thing and improved it, primarily through building in a QF 17pdr as kind of a response to the stronger german Tiger and Panther tanks, which appeared between '42 and '43 on the european battlefields and were superior to nearly all allied tanks. While the americans developed a completely new tank as response to that, the Pershing, the british just took the M4 (if that was a good idea, keeps an open question, cause the M4 was known as „Tommykocher“ on the german side, which means as much as „tommy boiler“, due to its weak armor and high vulnerability of burning out) as base and mounted their strongest anti-tank weapon on it. It was introduced in 1944 and took already part on the Normandy landings. Even so the Firefly became one of the most famous allied WW2 tanks, mainly because of its effectiveness in combat. Regardless that the tank was mostly sent to combat with untrained crews, the first event took place only 3 days after D-Day, as a Firefly destroyed 5 Panthers in a Row at the french village Norrey-en-Bessin. The next 5 Panthers in a row destroyed by a Firefly were just 5 days later, at the 14th June, near the town Tilly-sur-Seulles. The probably most legendary Sherman Firefly yet was a canadian one. On the 8th August, one Sherman of the 1st Northamptonshire Yeomanry A-Squadron (which is quite probably one of the decal options in the kit), destroyed 3 Tiger tanks in a row near Saint-Aignan-de-Cramesnil. One of these Tiger tanks was that of the probably most famous and feared german tank ace Michael Wittmann, who had a total score of 138 destroyed allied tanks, and who was killed there. That‘s literally everything about this tank I know..... all by heart..... okay I admit that I googled the town names and dates^^ Looking forward to win the tank your modeling young talent from Germany, Aiden
