God i love toy soldiers. My grandfather had the Napoleonic British infantry and highland infantry sets and let me play with them everytime i went to my grandparents house (i think he only had them to keep me happy) and really those soldiers inspired me to learn about history and to collect toy soldiers. I still have about 6000 1/72 scale plastics and i have given away another 6000 or so over the years because of moving houses and getting married etc. My mum always reminds me that my pocket money was three pounds and fifteen pence for several years because that was exactly the price of a box of soldiers from my local toy shop. Love those old days.

Interesting, I’ve still got my set buried somewhere in the garage. It contained La Haye Saint (no base), British and French line infantry and artillery, French Imperial guard and the farmhouse accessories. Seem to remember that all the troops were yellowish / cream colour apart from the imperial guard, which were grey. I already had some Highland infantry (also yellow). Great memories that led to me researching the battle in depth for years afterwards.

One or two unboxings but no real review AFAIK. Certainly not as in depth as you produce them! BTW: you are right about the nightmarish horses. But frankly, all Airfix horses had the same problems. Over time, you lost the bases. I recently saw some horses that were cast with integral bases. A much better idea IMHO BTW2: i think the farm vehicles & figures were unique to this set. They were not included with the regular Farm House and I don't think they were a stand-alone release.

This is a good review. I enjoyed this because when I was wargaming starting intermediate school, waaaaay back in the day, I bought these sets individually and thought why can't Airfix make a set like the gun emplacement set? So I wrote to them suggesting they do this. The following year out it came. It didn't have all of the sets this one does, but it was good to see. I like to think I had a hand in this set but I'm sure they had this in mind before I suggested it.

They didn't resculpt figures to get them in a different scale, they actually mechanically pantographed them in 3D either up or down depending on the scale they wanted. It must have been a gruelling job. Nowadays you'd just type in the scale you want on your 3D printer.

A very nice review and I agree about the white plastic. I agree that some of the sets are a little dated but the Imperial Guard, Prussians and the RHA are very good, especially the RHA. The others are not that bad and I enjoy gaming with them and not just out of nostalgia! Regarding the 1/32 French, I never had then in the 70s, although looking online now they are a 29 figure set of 7 poses and as far as I can see they are not 1/32 scale versions of the 1/72 scale set. The figures appear to be better anatomically and overall better poses that the smaller figures. Might keep an eye out for these on Ebay! Look forward to part 2!

Hello, just some remarks, `nice-to-know`. In Minute 7.52 of your video, the diorama plate shows the "sand pit" in wich a battalion of the famous 95th Rifles hided. By the way, the farm house is the `La Hye Sainte`, which was defended by the 2. (light) Battallion of the KGL (Hannover) under the command of Major Baring. The light Battallion was equivalent dressed and equipped like the 95th Rifles. They held the farm several hours until they run out of ammunnition. I think only a handfull where able to escape after some handjobs against the french in the living room and the orchard of the farm. Major Baring was one of them. (Literatur hint: Bernard Cornwell: Waterloo). Thanks for the review. I got it to my 8th birthday 1980. If you choose the Clean Metal , be aware that it is a thick paint and will require several light coats and a 24 hr drying time. Be sure to shake cans thoroughly before and during painting, these clog easily. As for turning the can "upside down " and spraying until no paint comes out to keep tip clean. IDK ? I managed to get the set off Amazon UK about 10 years ago. Maybe sold out by now I would think. There is a second hand set on ebay today but not cheap!

The quality of Airfix ranged from damn good to awful. Things did improve in 1973-74 when they did re-design some of their sets, but companies like Atlantic and ESCI spurred the movement towards really well detailed figures.

I really wish Airfix would just retire these kits. They weren't particularly good back in the 60s and 70s. The fact that these kits were designed to be pocket money kits and they're now expecting people to pay £30 for them I think it's comical and a little bit disrespectful.

I agree with you, very dated but some kits do grab the attention

I've never understood why some of the kits were such poor quality, in particular the 1/72 figures, yet the 1/32 ones were beautiful. It's as if they were made in different factories, with different equipment and designers.

I personally found the set to be of poor quality. Not at all as I remembered it from the 1970's.

it was probably a crisper mould back then and the packaging was far superior to this edition

@@TOYSOLDIERREVIEW They are poorer quality plastic. The originals were not brilliant, but they are better quality than these - even after decades in the loft. The farm house was originally sold as La Haye Sainte, to which it bears a passing resemblance, and was originally much better quality and in grey plastic. The Prussians were a later addition and not in the original set. Brings back a lot of happy memories.
