Let's be clear...this was NOT a hunt...this was a cull...that was explained if you listen. He made a good shot and it demonstrated the effectiveness of an airgun...that was the point. And,if you think a lung shot elk would go down immediately with a modern rifle (all of the time),then you are seriously mistaken. I personally know someone that lung shot a big bull and it ran 125 yds...with a .375 H&H magnum! What I'm saying,basically,is that you're clueless...

No shot is a for sure dropping animal. With any rifle caliber that is not pushing 5000 ftp or better. Wild animals or wild people do not behave like anyone expects when you shoot them in the dead zone. The idea is making sure you do enough damage that they bleed out both sides of the hole you punch through them so you get a good blood trail. I have seen the 50 caliber Hammer drop Elk like they were dropped from a roof and I have seen 300 win short mag hit the boiler and the elk run for a half mile. The art of killing is not an exact science.

A TKO number of 19.9 is very impressive for a air-rifle. When The 270 Winchester with a 130gr bullet going 2900fps will only give you a TKO number of 14.9... Killing a cull animal for research and data gathering is more responsible than just assuming it will work. I for one would like to see what the wound channel looked like, and to see some ballistic gel. test with different bullets.

As a hunter ever since I was 16, and even an airgun hunter, I've got to say I'm disappointed when I see folks taking game like this in an environment like this one because it's not hunting. I can't respect this, and couldn't bring myself to do it. Shooting a seemingly farm-raised, relatively tame elk in a fenced field at short range just feels wrong. This kind of thing just gives anti-hunting lobbyists and hunter harassers in the field a rallying point.
@joeodonnell86518 жыл бұрын
This is a farm. He never called it hunting. In fact he called it "testing". I'm with you on "canned hunts". But if you were looking for a hunting video you missed the point of the video
@diesurfn88 жыл бұрын
Joe your absolutely correct. The man in this video is a gun smith, airgun enthusiast and one of the most renowned airgun representatives in Idaho. He was merely field testing the gun for his customers and other potential buyers. We weren't hunting, but you better believe we harvested that elk. None of it went to waste I assure you.

Wow! Great shot and awesome performance from the bushbuck .45 air rifle. A center fire rifle couldn't have done it better. Just another fine tool for herd management.

Wow I never thought an airgun could hit like a beast like that. Good job.

Looks like he didn't leave much of a blood trail, but you didn't have to track him 100 yards after the noise spooked him.

Great shot! I was wondering why there wasn't any bull elk shot with a big bore air rifle. Now I know it's possible! Many yars ago, when hunting in Argentina, I took a good shot at an asian buffalo with a Ruger N1 in 375 H & H in the same lung area, just behind the shoulder, at about 120 meters and it didn't go down easily like that! It took a second shot at 50 meters in the base of the neck. Only then it was down and out immediately. I'm eager to hunt wild hog and russian boar in the US and I want to do so with an air rifle!

very impressed with the power of this airgun (and yes I actually understood the purpose of the video) I'm going back and forth between this and the Airforce Texan (also in 45). I believe the Texan is more powerful but man the one you have is a beautiful gun. thanks for the video, only question is how far do you really think you were from it?
@extreme.45767 жыл бұрын
That was a good demonstration of the power of air. These guns are great for taking large animals at shorter ranges. This video was to show that an elk size animal could be taken humanly with an air gun. This was a cull animal on an elk ranch. These cull animals are taken out of the herd to strengthen the herd by removing inferior animals. Meaning smaller body, horn and non breeding animals. No where did he state we are on a hunt for a wild elk. Animals from these breeding ranches are introduced into areas where elk once were and are trying to reintroduce into the area or, on hi fence ranches. I assist a close friend with his hi fence ranch. It's a 10 section hi fence, no canned hunt by any means!!! 10 miles of Tx hi fence, it gives a person an opportunity to hunt exotic and large game with out going to Africa, or where Elk, Red Stag, Fallow and other species are found. You are NOT guaranteed a kill by any means. It's a hunting ranch not a killing ranch. Big Bore Airguns have been used for many years to take large game. Lewis and Clark actually took a .46 caliber repeater on their journey. Dennis Quackenbush is the True Pioneer of the modern Big Bore Air Rifles od today. The Quackenbush guns haven proven themselves as TRUE African Game hunters. With Eric Henderson, Jim Chapman and many others taking Kudo size animals. Nice Demo Fellas

Question : Ever chrono the velocity of your bullet ? Comp. to a 45.70 ?
@wildrangeringreen2 жыл бұрын
not even close, this rifle is able to lob a 400gr (the lighter, original bullet for .45-70) at around 850fps. 45-70-405 launched it's bullet at around 1300 fps. The Army moved to a 500gr bullet to make it more effective at extreme ranges (over a mile, they had volley-fire aspirations), and that dropped the MV down to around 1200fps. 300 and 350gr loadings for .45-70 were a civilian invention, meant to be more suitable for deer hunting, and those were usually loaded with 75gr of powder, achieving around 1400fps. .450 BPE (very similar case size), was often loaded with 85gr of powder and a 270gr bullet, for a velocity of 1700fps. You aren't going to be able to get true black powder 45-70 or .50-70 or .32-40, .38-72, .22 WCF, .25-25, or .577 Snider ballistics out of air rifles until you dispense with primitive knock-valves, our fill pressures are too low and the valve isn't open long enough to make that work. Black powder is insanely inefficient, but the area under the pressure curve is still greater than the production air rifles of today. The closest people have come with a commercially available air gun is to mimic .22 LR standard velocity (40gr @ 1070fps) in a .22 with a heavily modded FX rifle. Air gun companies stick with those valves because they're simple and cheap, and they can sell you on insignificant "improvements" like port sizes, shot count (which for a hunting gun isn't even really an issue) and fill pressures. They were lobbing 190gr lead balls in .50 rifles at around 700fps on only 800psi of air back in the late 1700's... they weren't using simple knock-valves. That being said, obviously, you don't need .45-70 to down Elk or Bision, it just shortens your range. Lewis and Clark's "expedition of discovery" did it with the above mentioned air rifle from the late 1700's (although theirs was most likely a .46 rifle, and used a lighter ball at a similar velocity)

This is not hunting. It is harvesting a barnyard animal that is so used to people it would let you pet it. Yes Air guns kill elk but is it really that hard to show a actual hunter harvesting an Elk in the wild? If you cannot pull it off send me one of the best long range calibers you make and I'll get you an Elk and there will be no fences in the video.

I've taken big bull elk with rifle and bow that didn't go down that quickly with well placed shot .Distance for an air rifle is compatible with bow shots for old school black powder rifles

i think your range estimation is a bit off lol. Elk bulls stand about 4.5-5 ft tall at the shoulder. Closer to 50-75 yards

Is there any advantage using an airgun for hunting?
@ritcheymt7 жыл бұрын
Airguns are quiet, especially if they have suppressors or use a low enough amount of pressure to keep the projectile sub-sonic. With that quiet comes the opportunity to take more shots at game without scaring nearby game away. So it's great for hunting hogs, dove, rabbits, turkeys, or anything else that may present a second shot within 1/4 mile or a 5-30 minute wait on stand. Plus, they're great for hunting in places where it's legal to hunt but close enough to houses, campgrounds, hiking trails, etc. that you just don't want to make folks nervous shooting a firearm. Additionally, the rounds don't carry as far as those from firearms, so it can be a little safer for folks nearby who worry about shots carrying for miles. Airgun ammo is generally much cheaper than firearm ammo. And finally -- and this is the best part -- you don't need to clean an airgun nearly as often as a firearm. You can spend your time shooting instead of cleaning.

This is not right to use an airgun on such a big animal where a regular gun would be much more cost-effective. and would bring the animal much less harm. would never buy an air gun for such a big animal.

it disgusts me whin people hunt on these farms that have caged animals in a fenced area and there basically pets they clearly were not scared of you
@leebrewer11907 жыл бұрын
I like high power airguns, but would rather see a traditional firearm for larger animals. A traditional firearm will make the kill a quick thing rather than waiting for the animal to die as it staggers around. In the end - these are game animals and are for food. I just like head (eye) shots and quick kills in everything from squirrels on up. With a traditional rifle its instant kill.

I honestly dont get it. I mean, i absolutely support your right to hunt. But this is not hunting is it? You said you were going to shoot that elk "just to see how the rifle performs" did you at least eat it afterward? Im not here to bash on you like these other people have done. I just dont see why you would kill an animal on an enclosed farm just to see how an air rifle performs. Again if you actually did go out with the intention of killing this for food then i dont really have an argument towards it. But if it was purely for the fact you wanted to test the rifle out i think it is a bit of a low move to be honest.
@idahonative49737 жыл бұрын
mattystewart8 of course we harvested it!, after all we're from Idaho. I don't know of anyone around here who would shoot a big game animal and just leave it on purpose. Maybe they do that shit in Connecticut or New York or something. In Idaho, we eat what we kill! And he was GREAT!
