4:50 So, the game has morality score: Knight (good)-Soldier (neutral)-Mercenary(evil). You get money for destroying targets and you use it to buy planes. More targets destroyed = better planes earlier in the game. However, destroying (completely optional) civilian targets lowers your score (and letting retreating enemies go rises it), which results in more difficult boss fights (and people in game berate you for being a bastard). Max0r, of course, indiscriminately destroys everything in game for humor, but you don't have to, except for Hoffnung, this particular war crime is mandatory.

Funnily enough, gault is a squadron you encounter in the soldier route, so max0r most probably raised his score somewhere after mayham enough to land in the soldier route again.

For the "Actual In-Game Dialogue" it's still Maxor doing the voiceover, but they're either direct quotes or adjacent to it. The actual dialogue isn't that rough. Keep up the great work, Airier!

It should be mentioned, that Pixy often says "still alive, buddy?" at the end of the missions you fly. At first out of surprise that you're still alive, then with joking respect as the fights get tougher, then after some of the crazier stuff starts happening having that line spoken to you by a traitor and enemy... myeah. That was a nice little twist of the knife. Plus, repeating the game, you can see the moments where Pixy really decided that the whole affair was horseshit and was going to turn.

- Solo Wing Pixy has his nickname because he once had one of his F-15's wings blown off and he had to fly back to base with only one wing. This is based on a real-life incident and the F-15 really can do that. - What the video didn't show is that Excalibur (the giant laser) snaps in half at the middle after tipping to the side and the upper half crashes down to the ground. The story has a lot of references to Arthurian mythology, with your destruction of Excalibur being referred to as you "pulling the sword from the stone" by both sides, the Round Table (a region that has enormous mineral wealth but the terrain is so rough that it's pretty much dogfight central) and a reference by an enemy ace not shown here that the Belkan Air Force considered themselves the spiritual descendants of the medieval Belkan knights, "the King who sleeps at Avalon" referring to the Avalon Hydroelectric Dam where the V2 is located, and of course the final stage of the Pixy dogfight where his plane is packing an ECM that deflects any missiles fired at him from any direction other than from directly ahead, forcing you to literally sky-joust him. - Max0r did not get the live-action footage, that's in the game itself. The plot is framed as a journalist doing a documentary on your character post-war, including interviewing the enemy aces you shot down, trying to find out who the hell were you and what happened to you. The closing cinematic flat-out has your plane vanish without a trace when it exits the camera's POV for one moment, with the narrator questioning whether Cipher, the Demon Lord of the Round Table, ever actually existed. - The "30 minute filler arc" is not actually 30 minutes long, per se. You have 30 minutes to reach a target score in order to win, but you can easily do it in half that time. - The very barebones version of the actual plot: Belka is basically the Ace Combat equivalent of Nazi Germany who turned ultranationalist and started the local equivalent of WW2 in 1995 after decades of economic troubles. Ustio seceded from Belka a few decades before and Belka managed to blitzkrieg them in very short order to try to re-annex them, so Ustio got desperate and hired mercenaries to bolster their forces, one of whom is you. Rest of the world united against Belka as the Allied Forces and managed to get them on the ropes before the Belkan leadership went bonkers and nuked themselves as a giant scorched earth operation whose sheer psychological effect stopped the fighting. Belka ultimately surrendered, but the Allied governments promptly descended into bickering over dividing up the resource wealth of former Belkan territories, pissing off soldiers on both sides who saw this as a disgrace towards the dead. Hence the rise of A World With No Boundaries, who planned on carpet-nuking half the world to, in Pixy's own words, "start over from Zero and entrust the future to the next generation".

I should note, the "very barebones version" does make Belka look to be mustache-twirling villains but it really winds up being rooted in a cause more real than 'just because': Economic issues. And I have found this is generally a common cause for Ace Combat conflicts - more or less.

Oh yeah. They had something like half their historical territory secede or get sold/ceded to neighbors within about half a century while they were trying to hold things together. And the thing with V2 is that although the setting did have nukes, Belka nuking themselves was basically the setting's Hiroshima, the first time nukes were used in anger in history. It was such a colossal WTF moment for the entire world that it made everyone else even more reluctant to use nukes, thereby allowing large-scale wars that would never happen in real life because of MAD.

Yeah, in a couple of games, you often get told of how Belka, refusing to let itself be taken by other nations, nuked itself. You'd have to be some kind of crazy, in order to nuke yourself.

honestly, my favourite part of Zero, aside from the kickass flamenco music during certain fights, was the Hoffnung mission. Because Hoffnung in German means Hope. So as the player, you are literally burning Hope to the ground. It was also always interesting reading the bios for the ace enemies you shot down, especially comparing and contrasting different routes for Knight, Soldier and Mercenary routes.

To be honest, the Ace Combat dialogue in game? It works well, for the tone of the series. Maxor is just taking the context and build up out to make it more funny. But playing the game in the moment, it works. Seriously, Ace Combat is one of those series you need to play to get the feeling of it fully. Good parody though of it, but it doesn't capture the full feeling of playing the game through. Oh, and pilot interviews is how the game works! That's how you get multiple replays through it.

Fun Fact: Cipher AKA Demon Lord of the Round Table is the first true coming of the Razgriz. He's the one that started it all for the legend of the Razgriz. I view Cipher as an Ace that can beat everyone against other previous Aces such as Mobius 1, Ghost of Razgriz, Talisman and Three Strikes. And many more aces from other Ace Combat games.

The plane pixy uses in the final mission is one of those heavily based on planes from battle fairy yukikaze its a shame that they didn't go for the over/under weapon placement(aside from the laser) for an extra cool factor

The scariest part IMO about Belka's plan with the nukes is that there was actually a real life plan to do exactly that: after China intervened in the Korean War, U.S. General Douglas MacArthur wanted to detonate twenty nukes in a line along the China/North Korea border to cut the peninsula off from mainland China. Thankfully for...well, everyone, MacArthur's fellow generals, subordinates, and superiors were universally horrified by this plan, and when MacArthur pressed the idea he was relieved from command. So as crazy as fiction is, reality isn't too much better.

The clip of the man saying PlayStation in engrish is from a game called Lifeline (or Operator's Side in Japan), which was a survival horror game made by Sony (but published here by Konami) where you help a waitress escape a monster-infested space hotel through voice commands. It's basically like a mix of Hey You! Pikachu and Resident Evil. It got pretty good reviews in Japan and more mixed ones everywhere else, and that clip kind of explains why. Y'see, a lot of Western reviewers at the time said that you really had to annunciate to get the game to recognize your commands, and even then it didn't always work...and I'm guessing that's because no one at either Sony or Konami thought to tweak the voice recognition a bit to better fit a native English-speaking audience. So if you speak in Engrish, the game actually recognizes your commands better.

Nuclear Border: Modern missiles/munitions, including nukes, can be set to detonate in air, airburst, on impact, or after impact, bunker busters, if you wanted to create a geographical border, you could use nukes built for and set to detonate after burying themselves, creating unpassable terrain, funny that both USA and USSR looked into using nukes for geographic; logistical uses, like reservoirs and super canals, which would be a bit different, since they were buried further down that a missile or dumb bomb could get the nukes, but still creating a canyon, however big or small would be useful for defining; defending a border.

FYI most nukes are thought to be set for airburst as that would be the most effective for use on above ground targets, especially skyscrapers, while leaving the least damage to the actual terrain, though most nukes are aimed at cities and military bases.

Well there is that one ace combat that is set in our world but the fanboys didn't like it so everything good about it will probably never appear in an ace combat game again like a plane that carries literal tactical nukes or their signature combat system and plane destruction where you could literally see your gun's rounds tearing the enemy planes bits off and well the helicopter missions were kinda cool but the helicopters themselves were kindly badly implemented where killing infrantry relied on locking onto them and holding the fire button for long enough for the game to decide that they are dead(seriously tanks died faster then individual soldiers). Also bombing tents nearly military assets or generally civilian buildings that are even near destroyed military vehicles does not constitute a breach of the rules of war. Same excuse the US used thousands of times since the afganistan war to justify them not being at fault for doing shit like killing a bunch of kids playing next to a burnt out husk of a tank or using an iraqi village as target practice for months because of an old destroyed tank in the middle of it.

my problem with that system is the game locked you into a on rails section in the midst of free roam aerial combat, which was just horseshit. I'm an ace pilot, I don't need the on rails section to shoot down my enemies, kthnx game. The helicopter combat was interesting, at first, but it didn't show what choppers could really do.

Well there was Ace Combat Infinity, which was also set in our world and was good. It was kind of a cross between the real world and Strangereal, it was pretty cool. Sadly the servers were shut down a few years back and it is no longer available.
