The lore destincts between these two in about every point (they are basically a species created by a civilisation of dragons on a planet of dragons who came into the "normal" world because the worlds overlapped for a while while the laws of magic were completely rewritten by the gods (specifically AO) because the original manifest was lost between late 4th and the beginning of fifth edition).

From my experience, monks have been really strong. Stunning strike killed a beholder in one of my games. It was clutch. Also, Paladin is cursed. I’ve seen it too many times. Paladins who make their AC high get hit the most from my experience. And it’s not just my dice. Another player in my games said he saw it happen a lot in other games he was in.

honestly the biggest problem with monks is they don't really get any useful features after 5 or 6 and the most played level range is 5-12. They have stunning strike and thats moderately good, would be better if it wasnt a CON save, one of the stats most creatures have in abundance. Most of their features are niche utility stuff after lvl 6, like not aging, walking on water, removing a condition, or immune to poison. Diamond soul is like the only standout feature between lvl 6 and 15

I did a fantasy Bear Grills/Streamer as smol Kobold. My camera crew was a beholder because I multiclassed into a warlock so my party and I could get paid in money or hp from my Infernal fan base. Every once and a while (even/especially during combat) my dm had my randomly roll a D20 and depending on what I got is what my fans sent me. It was usually extremely very unhelpful up to and including a Tarrasque on us during a sleathy forest dungeon invasion. Because the chat thought it’d be funny. We were a bunch of level 5s. Which was why we were stealthing our way through the dungeon rather that frontal assaulting it. We survived but I had to bribe my corporate overlords (TWICE) to revive rogue/Run Away Princess because she was a fan favorite and local source of Fan Service.

Monk didn’t really need a buff frankly, I see this so often where people look at Way of the Elements and decide the whole class sucks, but Monks are actually really powerful, I mean, quivering fist for example, the attack that will kill a lot of mobs outright, on a failed save, also the ability to just straight up stop all incoming attacks, or Drunken Master which gains both extra movement and a free disengage just for landing an attack.

Astral Self increases range, deals Force damage every hit, and you can use your Wis modifier for Str checks and saves if the arms are active (all on level 3!), not to mention later on you can essentially use Deflect Missiles on spells, gain Message and Thaunaturgy as a single feature, increase your AC by 2 for 5 ki points, and a lot more bs.

Eh it depends, quivering palm is only a feature for way of open hand; coincidentally that's considered pretty much the only viable monk subclass if you want to be useful with a slight exception for way of long death. New tashas subclasses seem great but I haven't heard or seen them be used enough to formulate an opinion; as someone who played a shadow monk to 18th level leme tell you how useless i felt compared to literally every other class in the game. The biggest issue is pretty much every enemy after a certain point will have a solid con save which makes your key features (Stunning strike, quivering palm, etc) increasingly unreliable to the point of uselessness. Monks are pretty great early game but fall off exceptionally hard compared to pretty much everyone.

Monks are worse then most other classes (except ranger and maybe sorc). The only good thing they have is stunnning strike and maybe open hand as subclass but outside of that every class does everything better. Also monk dont gain anything out of equipment and they have THREE good items; new gloves from Candlekeep, Insignia from HotDQ and eldritch claw tattoo from Tasha.

Also like commented above, the actual monk playstyle is to neutralize a specific threat, either by immediately jumping in and obliterating a squishy with extra attack + flurry of blows (which a rogue can also do, but needs a sneak attack for it while a monk can do it consistently), or by making it impossible for one of the foes to move and giving advantage on attacks with stunning strike (way of the drunken master + sentinel sounds like a fun combo now that I think about it... stop multiple people in place in a turn...)

Stunning strike rarely works, and since all their abilities require Ki they don’t get much use of them until high levels. They aren’t horrible though, and I think monk and rangers are both under rated

I'm sure a lot of people probably explained it already, but a) I am too lazy to look up if they actually did and b) I like explaining, so here goes anyway. JoCat, prior to this series, has done a Crap Guide to Monster Hunter, covering all of the weapon types in most the same style, complete with adding previously covered weapons on the title screen after each episode. He references this quite a lot around here, most notably by his outfit - the assless chaps are actually trousers made out of Kirin, one of the elder dragon enemies from the game (which is a dragon unicorn that shoots lightning specifically), the wiggly head is the Wiggler "helmet", notable for the ludicrous bouncing it does (it's actually a great item for support players, as it extends the reach of potions you use and makes them benefit people in your vicinity) which is a reward for quests that involve little wiggler plants it's look is based on, that vest is a default outfit in Monster Hunter World and the sword and shield is JoCrap's favourite weapon type in the game. Dodogama, the lizard with a rocky jaw, is an enemy from Monster Hunter World and a gunlance (which you seemed amused by the idea of) is an actual weapon type in Monster Hunter too. Just thought it'd be worth mentioning!

When I heard your comment about the monk being an excuse only for kamehamehas: I was thinking about playing a Kensei monk who is basically John Wick because he could turn anything into a weapon. Even a pencil. Other than that, in our current campaign, we also have a ranger (Feywanderer, from Tashas), and she has pulled off some really incredible stunts by now. She has the Sharpshooter feat, so no more disadvantage because of half or three-quarters cover, longbow for the "around the world my arrow goes" shots, and her and I agreed to the fact that she can use me as a riding mount in combat. So she picked the free feat Mounted Combatant. Fun times. And about your Legolas-reference argument, Hawkeye wants to have a serious deabte over that.

Everything in 5e is viable if you have a smart build. My level 4 Hexblade can, without crits and buff spells, do a nice 24 damage per turn. Without the right build, he'd do 10 tops.

Fun fact about Monk attacks. They can make 4 attacks a turn at level 5. It’s supposed to be balanced because their damage dice per attack are really low, but that can be buffed with spells like Enlarge and Magic Weapon (if you have a pair of gloves), allowing monks to deal absurd damage per turn. Just saying in case you’re ever in a party with a monk to make sure somebody has one of these spells.

can confirm paladins when done right are broken, at level 7 using a hobgoblin paladin using the oath of heroism i did 100 damage to a ghost in 1 turn. there was no homebrew

DEUS VULT is a historical meme about arising from the crusades. Supposedly when the Pope declared the First Crusade, the crowd responded with a mighty shout of “Deus Vult!” (“God wills it!”). Despite that event being well before any of the militant orders like the Knights Templar were created, it is pretty common to see memes with Knights in Templar livery discussing how they must retake the Holy Land for X or Y stupid reason and justifying it with Deus Vult!

The main problem with the Ranger was that all its subclasses originally just sucked when it first came out (and many not knowing how to properly build their Ranger). Since then a lot of changes have happened making it one of the more potent versatile DPS classes, so it is by far no longer "the worst" class, especially with all the new variants added to it through "Tasha's Cauldron of Everything".

As someone who is playing a Ranger in Curse of Straud, and played another one in a previous run of the campaign. RANGERS ARE NOT WEAK. Its kinda the same concept as paladin, only instead of a mix of cleric and fighter its druid and fighter. Some abilities are more flavor text than anything but when they do come in handy it helps a lot.

Rangers actually can ride their animal companions from level 1, if you pick a small sized race and a medium sized companion. Such as a halfling with a mastiff. Although you’d have to get the ok from your DM to have your companion before 3rd level, which I think is fine, since you just won’t have access to the beast master features yet.

An argument for melee ranger that Jocrap didn't mention Steel Wind Strike(Henceforth SWS for simplicity), sure it's a 5th level spell so rangers won't get it til level 17 but so is swift quiver Basically with SWS you can choose up to 5 creatures within 30ft of you, make a melee spell attack against each of them dealing 6d10 force damage on a hit and then you can(but don't have to, you can choose to remain at the location you cast the spell from) to teleport to a space adjacent to one of the creatures you attacked(regardless of whether or not the attack hit)

I've been playing a Goblin Wild Soul Barbarian for over a year, I started when Wild Soul was still (UA) and I did not like the level 6 ability so I sat down and brainstormed a few ideas. After a lot of talking, tweaking, and thinking I came up with this, ran it past my DM, and now use it(I also swapped to the official Wild Soul, but am still using this instead of it's lvl 6). Feel free to use it! By the way, the wild magic table you roll on is the Wild Magic Sorcerer table (unless you prefer to use a homebrew one, go nuts) Surging Magic 6,10,14 6 At 6th level, you have begun to acclimate to the magic that has suffused your body allowing you to learn and cast spells. You gain 4 1st level spells and 3 cantrips from the Sorcerer and/or Wizard Spell Lists. You are able to cast these spells without a spell slot or components, and they use the same pool of uses as Detect Magic. These spells use Constitution as their spellcasting ability/modifier. When casting a spell, you are only able to cast the spell at its base level. Roll a D20 when casting 1st or higher-level spells aside from Detect Magic, on a 1 the magic in your body flares up and causes chaos. Roll on the Wild Magic Table to see what happens. You learn more spells at 10th and 14th level. 10 Learn 3 additional spells of either 1st or 2nd level and 1 additional cantrip. 14 Learn 2 additional spells of 1st, 2nd, or 3rd level and 1 additional cantrip.
