Believe it or not, the submarine aircraft carrier was a real concept. The Japanese Navy built 40+ of them during WW2.

Only two (Edit: 3) were truly meant as submarine aircraft carriers (the I-400 class). Most other Japanese cruiser or fleet submarines did carry seaplanes but only for scouting purposes. Japanese were not alone in this. British also had atleast one boat with a hangar (M-2 if I am remembering correctly, her sister had a 12" gun instead of the hangar). While the French cruiser submarine Surcouf (famous for having a twin 8" gun turret and disappearing) also had a hangar with a seaplane. (Edit: Italians also had a submarine with a hangar but later removed the hangar. US and Germany also experimented with the concept)

@@Airier while talking about stupid submarine ideas the British created a class of STEAM POWERED SUBMARINES they where called the k class and every last one of them sank and none of them ever saw combat. when the last one of them sank a sailor that saw it go under asked hours later if it was normal for submarines to dive backwards.

@cat is fuwa Refer to my previous comment. Japan built 3 (yeah not 2 that was a mistake, sorry) I-400 class submarines which carried 3 seaplanes each. But the Japanese J, A and B type cruiser submarines all carried at least one seaplanes (some two) for reconnaissance purposes.

Fun fact the A-10 is actually known to be something of a terror in a gun fight because of its low stall speed and surprisingly good agility. Of course that doesn't really mean anything when you can throw an AIM-120 at it from close to 80miles away where it can't even see you. Oh and as for shooting down IRBM/ICBMs its totally possible to intercept them at launch with planes if they are near the launch site. Its the whole mid course/terminal intercept that is real hard

The A-10 is pretty poor in a dogfight due to it's low thrust-weight ratio vs actual fighter jets thrust-weight ratio. In any dogfight that becomes a turn fight the A-10 has 1 or 2 good turns in it before it needs to level off to regain airspeed to remain airborne, it just doesn't have the ability to add energy faster than it uses it. This results in giving the fighter jet a free gun-run and that's the A-10 down. I'll agree the A-10's gun is lethal if it connects but getting that gun on target against an intelligent manuevering fighter jet is poor odds and more the exception than rule. See any pvp dogfight in DCS vs an A-10.

@@Elthial it has plenty of thrust:weight, the issue is if you've got ordinance on your wings still or are holding the trigger down (the gun's recoil is equal in thrust to one of its two engines)

​@@DSiren It just doesn't. In a turn it loses energy faster than it gains it and if you stay in a tight turn you will stall out. You stall in a guns dogfight, you die. A-10 Thrust/weight: 0.36 F-15C Thrust/weight: 1.19 F/A-18E/F Thrust/weight: 1.15 F-22 Thrust/weight: 1.37 F-35A Thrust/weight: 1.08 The above numbers can be taken with a bit of salt as they have different payloads etc but the obvious fact that all jets we consider "dogfighters" have TWR of 1+ meaning they can turn forever whilst the A-10 just doesn't have that power and doesn't need it. Swooping attack runs on ground targets don't cost air speed and long enough runway even low TWR can get airborne. The A-10 is a CAS plane with a focus on survivability and endurance. It is fantastically designed for that role but besides A2A sidewinders it's got little to threaten a dedicated fighter.

A cool detail about this fight is that the difficulty changes significantly depending on which one of the two you shoot down first. If Rage dies first, Scream has a mental breakdown and becomes really slow and easy to hit, if Rage survives longer though he becomes vengeful and much faster and more aggressive.

It was the sonar buoys that helped the ASW(Anti-Submarine Warfare) planes detect the Alicorn, relay the info to the 3 Burke classes and Ticonderoga class who then fired their VLASROCs(Basically missiles with homing torpedoes in them that flies towards the sub’s location, break apart when they’re close and drop the torpedo into the water via parachute where it seeks out the sub once it touches the water) and caused the Alicorn to surface.

Uh, with regards to the straight vertical climb, the Eurofighter Typhoon, considered a 4½ Generation jet, has a climb rate of 62,000ft a minute, from take-off, going vertical, fully loaded or empty. It has a service ceiling of 65,000ft (just shy of 20kms or 12 and change miles), so in just over a minute it can reach maximum ceiling and be searching and vectoring for/to targets. This is often practiced in alarm starts for emergency scrambles against things like Tu95 bomber intruders over the North sea from places like RAF Lossiemouth. Reasonably sure that the F15C, Su27 and a couple other fighters can perform similar climbs in the vertical, whether fully laden or not.

Yeah they are part of a whole metal gear esque story that got cut from the main game but they are basically brainwashed child soldiers that got raised to be aces in the next big war. Your own side is sending them and sabotaging your missions to try and kill you as in previous wars aces like the player character were a rogue factor or as they call it a "singularity", and a subset of your commands want their war neat and controlled. Like i said the SP missions were basically cut story that had levels mostly already made and even have what are basically objectives and dialogue but do nothing if you succeed or fail. For example in the harbor mission at certain intervals get tasked to kill NAMED enemy officers and VIPs as they are being evacuated from the area, there is no mention of this in the brief or at any other point and was presumably a part of the cut storyline. The whole idea of basically eliminating certain enemy officials to manipulate internal conflicts on the enemy side in a certain way is a really cool concept and i love when its done well in stories.

It kinda worked but wasn't really practical. Also in early cold war (and also late WW2 I think) there was the idea of parasite craft where a long range strategic bomber would launch its own fighter escort rather than fighters having to fly together with them, conserving fuel for the fighters (many fighters had less range than bombers as well, which that plan also helped address). But yeah the parasite fighter concept didn't work out well either. 24:45 Count ("the vocalist") got into the actual military alongside Trigger (the player character/"mute psychopath") because he was also a good pilot. (He didn't die in that last mission, he was the one that shot down the friendly) 26:25 the fact that you can choose your own planes (and their camos/paint job) is why Maxor jokes about Erusian Experimental X2 Strike Wyvern. Because that's the plane he has on screen when he makes those jokes. It is even in Erusean colours. 38:50 flooding the back of the submarine to give the gun enough elevation is in the game. It is also from real life. In WW2, during the Normandy Landings the captain of the USS Texas had the ship partially flooded to tilt the ship so that the guns would have more elevation and be able to shoot further inland. (The Texas also "duelled" a sniper once. Thought 14" guns make that really one sided) 39:33 Pretty sure the main current issue with Railguns is that they lack endurance. It is not that the railgun isn't better at most gun things than regular cannons. But that you can only shoot a railgun a few hundred times before needing to change the barrel while a regular modern naval gun can be fired much more before you need to replace the barrel. (Btw Captain Torres, Alicorn, Scream and Rage are from the DLC) 43:30 as other people have said, that is Kessler Syndrome, which is what that section of the Game/Video is called.

Just need to plug some numbers, namely F = ma (F: Force, m: Mass, a: Acceleration) and E_(K)=(1)/(2)mv^(2) which has to do with Friction (The K is a subscript in case someone see's this and wants to translate this back into an equation) and then of course air compression. I hate math (though I am proficient enough in it) but I literally learned physics just to play Kerbal Space Program. I am never using math again to make a point. Because math is complicated and one mistake fucks up the whole equation. I regret this but am too committed to what I already wrote to omit it even if no one reads it.

The "this is actual lore" does undersell exactly what was going on, but it makes sense later. Those 'friendly craft' are drones controlled by AI, and they pulled the same trick earlier in the game. And I'll say this clearly... something like this has happened in the franchise before this where the IFF system (Identify Friend/Foe) was screwed with. At least once I'm aware of. Once the 'friendlies' opened fire and couldn't be contacted it was probably clear what was going on and it was assumed they'd hacked the whole system when really all they have to do is fool the AWACS for a short time. (The mission takes place over enemy territory, after all.) It's questionable but really all the incredible focus on tech in this game and having AI systems in play REALLY kinda allow them to get a pass on fridge logic. Would this work in reality? Maybe. It depends on what sort of fail-safes people have in place to determine if someone's spoofing IFF signals.

Very much what Box Tank said. These are an actual munition type that are basically an evolution of the "Hedgehog" anti-submarine mortars. It's a missile with a small torpedo encased inside (nobody's bothered to stick full-size torpedoes within missiles, as far as I'm aware, since regular anti-ship missiles are preferred as the primary ship-to-ship munition) that's dropped when the missile reaches its target point. The torpedo then activates and begins tracking its target. What's strange is that in _Aces at War,_ it's explicitly mentioned that submarine torpedoes have not advanced beyond WWII-era straight-runners where you need a spread of half-a-dozen to have a decent chance of hitting a target.

I've played the entire game to the beginning and end, and I can say the review is 80% accurate. They forgot to mention to unlock planes is an RPG-like mechanic, both sides decided to destroy each other's satellites, the war was orchestrated by refuges you destroyed in previous games (which matters little to the main plot), and you do fewer war crimes. Also, a lot of the vehicles in this game, are real. Though some are experimental vehicles they would never see the light of day beyond the one prototype when they realize it was a bad idea. Like the submarine carrier, you see in those DLC missions. Finally, to enrage you. Chicago Pizza is based on what the world considers pizza. Yeah, I hate to tell you this Airier, but New York style is considered the thin bastardized version of actual Pizza by Italy, Brizillia, anywhere that makes Pizza.

yeah...Ace combat is basically like "hey remember the crazy stuff you'd come up with as a kid? Yeah we made that into a video game series." or "Remember top gun? Remember how it made you feel? Yeah we made that into a video game series." It's basically taking the romance and fantasy of the fighter pilot you'd hear about as a kid, all the epic dog fights, impossible missions, quotes that sound right out of an anime or a drama, or hell a visual novel/anime game and turning it into a video game that would make that littl aviation kid squeal with joy.

Btw ace combat had an anime the "battle fairy yukikaze". Yes its not ace combat but its ace combat and even AC7 is heavily based in some story elements and motifs from the anime. That and planes and the mecha designer from the show later worked on the AC games and some planes were effectively directly ported into AC but under different names.

They use the Convicts to give the illusion that the Airfield is an actual Military Instillation, so the Opposing Forces dedicate time and resources to put this dud target out of commission. To really sell the image, the Wardens were given authority to send Convicts into the air with Aircraft thats low on fuel and without operational weaponry unless they remotely allow it from a secure location. It's creative from a Fictional Writing point of view, but it's land the Blufor nations in the Hague realistically.

Speaking about the planes climbing vertiaclly up the space elevator shaft, it is technically possible with highly advanced 5th gen fighter, look up any air show of an F-22 taking off and most of the time the pilot shows off by just going straight up right after take off. So while the last sequence does bend the rules a little bit, it is not as impossible as you paint it to be. The most advanced planes in the game (5th and 6th gens) could potentially do it.

Correction: the f-15, some Russian planes, and the f-22 can fly vertically, because their thrust to weight ratio is greater than one. They can only do this up to a maximum altitude, but they can do it for a decent ascent.

When it comes to the vertical space elevator escape sequence, it's harder than it looks BECAUSE it's a vertical climb. You've gotta keep the throttle up to avoid stalling, the wind can knock you off course, and there are platforms by the walls.

If this is your first foray into the world of Ace Combat, oh you sweet summer child. I really do recommend these games, because you can make it a lot easier (I used to play these games when I was like 7 on the easy controls). You can change the controls to where moving the thumbstick right or left automatically turns the plane for you. You can also disable the inversion so up is up and down is down. TL;DR - Ace Combat is awesome and you should totally play it, you can change the settings to make flying easier. Edit: That last song you mentioned is "Daredevil", and the game was actually delayed FOR that song. Also, Ace Combat 7 is a modern game. He just grabbed the case for Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies, which came out in 2001. Ace Combat 4 is the PS2 game, whereas Ace Combat 7 is for PC, Xbox One, and Playstation 4/5.

It's story is barely comprehensible, missions can be over in less than five minutes, it's difficulty curve is more like a difficulty roller coaster, and it has one of the most in-depth customization systems I've ever seen in a video game. I can't guarantee you'll like it, but if you're willing to put the time in it'll sink it's hooks into you and you'll hope it'll never let go. When that game hits it's high notes, you either feel like a god or you suddenly realize that you've been tweaking the paint job on your dream robot for the last four hours and loved every second of it. Did I mention it was made by FromSoft before they made Dark Souls? Yeah, before Dark Souls and it's successors FromSoft was best known for their mecha games.

also, in regards to Ace Combat in general, AC7, in my opinion, was visually stunning, gameplay looks buttery smooth and f*cking intense from what I've seen (sadly have not played it but seen let's plays of it), but story wise AC7 is the most disappointing. Especially when comparing to AC4, 5 and Zero. There's always been an element of out there in Ace Combat, after all, most real life missions don't involve flying through canyons to accomplish missions, nevermind the perennial shooting down a massive air mobile fortress, or flying into a giant base to blow up a missile threatening to launch a nuke (or both in a couple of the series' games). Honestly, AC7 and AC6 were let downs for me storywise. Music was freaking awesome as always though.

I love how you called out basically every stupid crazy shit that happens regularly in this series. Even the more mundane stuff about military aviation because, yes, air combat never happens at those distances. Regardless, any proper ace combat fan will tell you that the dumb stuff is what gives charm to the series. It's basically Gundam and Metal Gear wrapped inside of a plane game. You should look into maxor's review of Ace Combat 0. Unlike this game, that one goes to some really dark stuff.

A-10 is a plane built around a 30mm gatling gun, it also carries missiles,it's intended to provide "close air support" to friendly soldiers on the ground, taking out tanks and the like. it's not useless/helpless in a dogfight, its biggest advantage being that it can, more or less out-turn faster fighter jets, that being said IIRC it usually flies combat missions with fighter buddies helping keep other fighters off the a-10's, not made for dogfihgting, not helpless tho.

When max0r says they're using buoys to locate the submarine he's referring to sonobuoys which as the name suggests are buoys with sonar on them that can be dropped into the water to help locate submarines. What actually made them surface was "everyone shoot[ing] at it" which to be fair I don't get either; in the clip he showed those surface combatants are presumably shooting ASROCs which is a rocket that flies out to a specified point and drops a homing torpedo into the water, and I don't think any submarine can survive that many torpedo hits no matter how big it is.

Spoiler Warning Spare Squadron is a unit of convicts used as cannon fodder (you are literally told by your commander to go die on many occasions) flying obsolete planes that probably only fly because the mechanic working on them is almost unnaturally good. And since it's only convicts being sent up, the only reason they care if someone goes down is that now they'll have to dig up another plane to replace it and stuff another poor shmuck in it to be a missile magnet. The base itself is a decoy that gets bombed regularly as well. Considering they can remotely control the weapons systems to keep the pilots from using them probably means they have some sort of safeguard to keep them from escaping. The Alicorn is a giant submarine whose size is actually comparable to a real aircraft carrier, and the landing strip doesn't go into the ship, it's just a platform that goes through, so if you mess up, you can just keep going and try again. Not by design, however, they really are suicide planes. And instead of long range missiles, it has a railgun that can fire a variety of nuclear shells which, while shorter ranged than ICBMs, allows the sub to fire from extreme range while remaining very hard to detect. It's also got a lot of direct combat capabilities like the railguns mounted on the sides which, alone, wipe out entire fleets of warships in less than a minute (and in the mission, he starts firing them at you, an aircraft), and is apparently durable enough to not only get depth charged and surface without any damage, but also take many barrages of missiles and still be able to submerge again, only surfacing to fight because the captain knows there is no retreat or escape once you catch up to him. And its main stealth capabilities mainly come from jamming and being able to operate at a depth that makes it virtually untraceable, with the only reason you're able to find it to begin with being because it is going through some shallows to find a good position to fire from. And to clarify, they don't use buoys to attack it, they use actual anti-submarine missiles instead of depth charges. Mihaly's title of "Archange" is supposed to be like "Archangel," as he is essentially the ruler of the skies both because he's from nobility and his ludicrous flying skills (having even trained boss aces from other games). The reason why those two drones at the end are so dangerous is because they are essentially super-fighters using the skill and experience of Mihaly, then yours, to base their flying off of, and they are trying to transmit their data to drone factories around the world to build more of themselves, which would perpetuate a war that would threaten mankind.

Actually, I'm pretty sure you would be able to play this game if you switch to novice controls, which will turn the game into a Call of Duty in the skies - yeah, it's not the way the game supposed to be played and it shows, but at least you will be able to get common with basic game mechanics and wrap your head around the three-dimensional maneuvering without constant crashing into things (so later you would probably want to turn novice controls off to get full control of the plane).

Everything that's come since has kind of fumbled on it, in no small part due to the frequently atrociously-written dialogue. I'd honestly give the whole series a hearty recommendation, though, as well as Project Wingman (which Max0r also has a review on) and would also suggest you check out the soundtracks on youtube, because all of them are fantastic, even those for the spinoff titles.

37:19 the Buoys they are using are sonar buoy's there disposable remote sonar systems dropped from planes used for finding enemy Subs. 44:09 that wasn't the plan it was to shoot down all the hacked satellites but they over looked the chain reaction and end up destroying there own this also leads on to the IFF ID system its not the satellites that do the ID they just link the planes to database.
