What I love about the characters is how childish they are. Considering they're all probably like 10 when they get recruited.

From what I'm gathering these characters will be returning and recurring. The way that Bryce says he'll see his captain again makes me think that those 'globules' contain the personality and memories of the Star Defenders that are then passed on to the next generation of recruits that they get forced into, so only total destruction of the body, globules included, will ensure the death of a Defender.

In fairness, the "mop-head" is actually a re-creation of how the Roman Legions marked their Centurions (officers in command of a Century of men, roughly 80-100 men depending on the time period). The transverse horse-hair crest was meant to be seen even in the midst of a chaotic battle, so that the common soldiers knew where to look to for orders. Pretty much everyone in ancient times did something similar for the same reasons, but a huge chunk of the Imperium's imagery and iconography is meant to reference ancient Rome specifically, so that's where they get it from. It's also because the franchise's poster-boys, the Ultramarines, are the most heavily Roman-inspired Space Marine chapter, and they were hugely influential to the rest.

The name FlashGitz is a reference to Ork Freebooters (Ork Pirates) who are often obsessed with collecting treasure, which they call flashy bits. As a result, other Orks will call them FlashGitz as an insult because of their obsession with with wealth/treasure, because it’s something that doesn’t involve fighting.

Fun fact, StarCraft was supposed to be set in the WH40K universe but war games wouldn’t sign off on it. So they made their own IP but kept a lot of the assets. That’s why Terrans look like space marines.

This reminded me of a book. In it, cultists destroyed a communications tower on a mining planet. Right during the orc invasion. There was no communication with the fleet, and in the besieged cities people began to go crazy with despair and worship Tzeentch. After the orcs, the guards also had to deal with cultists and a demonic invasion. Only three people survived (Commissar Atia Holmg, Inquisitor Alonso Barro and nun Alita Stein). Cool book, one of a whole series (series about Commissar Holmg). But not canon. Russia is full of such books. GW has nothing to do with them.
