When I attempt airlayers, I take a bit of plastic, fold it around the trunk such that it is kind of divided into three partitions: the middle part goes behind the trunk, and the other two overlap in front of it, and the trunk is in the middle of the length of the folded sheet of plastic. Then I fix it to the trunk. I do the bark cutting before that "delicate dance" with the plastic. This approach makes it easier to fill the thing with moss or turf afterwards. And I don't cut holes in the bottom. I find that the substrate will be filled with the sap from the trunk, and my hypothesis is that it is precisely the right amount of water. My success rate is 100%. The last sentence is a lie.

Very helpful episode Xavier - I'll have to check out your other suggested video. I'd like to try a couple of air layers next spring so knowing the timing is great. Very lovely little resulting bonsai. Fingers crossed that growth takes of strong! From your experiments, do you prefer using bonsai soil or sphagnum as your medium? I remember that sphagnum caused a lot of root rot post separation.
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat Ай бұрын
I use sphagnum for the airlayer process but once separated it definitely goes into a potting medium :)

This is timely - I set up an air layer on my hornbeam yesterday. I've never seen anyone poke holes in the plastic sheet like you did in this video Xav, and when you unwrapped it the sphagnum looked quite dry - do you water the moss ball during development to stop it drying out?
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat Ай бұрын
I probably water every 3 -4 weeks if required. I have been poking holes since starting this process after watching Ryan Neil from Bonsai Mirai. i know some people happily leave them uncheckeed for the entire 3 month process.
@NoQuarter01
@NoQuarter01 Ай бұрын
Do you open it every week or so to check moisture level? Or do you have to water the sphagnum moss periodically? Great video thanks Xav
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat Ай бұрын
I check it every 4 to 5 weeks but usually it can be left and normal rain or watering allows a little moisture to keep the sphagnum moist. In my early attempts I checked and watered them nearly everyday and they all failed - just too wet for roots to stay alive and not rot. thanks for watching.
