As a Aircraft Mechanic I have tried out the seat cushions in water, once water logged it may barely keep your head out of the water but it will definitely help. And a couple more tips from someone that has taken aircraft cabins apart many times. The air from the air vent may be somewhat filtered but the hoses that the air passes through do not get cleaned and are very dirty inside, I always turn mine off. Also the potable water tanks that are used for your tea and coffee, are not cleaned very often. I choose to only have a drink from something that was bottled. The great cup of coffee can wait till I'm at my destination.

Note that a direct flight does NOT mean it won't make a stop or two. Direct just means you will not change planes at any of its stops. This is a very common misconception. If you want to only take off and land once, choose a nonstop flight.
@jamiesmiles831211 ай бұрын
THIS needs to be pinned because I (as someone who has never flown, but plan to one day) thought that a "direct" flight meant I was going "directly" to my destination. I would have never thought that it would stop somewhere in between, even if I didn't have to deboard. I, personally, want to take a "nonstop" flight and didn't even know there was a difference until I saw your post. The wording is very deceptive (if, like me, one has not flown before). Thanks!!

OK you wanted some comments…..former charter jet pilot here. Never ever use the blankets….they are hardly ever cleaned at all. Always have your seatbelt on. While the back of the aircraft is probably the safest place to be in the event of a crash, I t’s probably a better idea to be able to get out of the airplane quickly. For that reason, I typically sit over the wing next to the emergency wing exit, because I know how to open the thing, I’ll be the first one out, and I’ll be able to assist others. The modern lavatory on your typical jet aircraft is not large enough for the mile high club, so don’t even try. Be really nice to the flight attendants. They have a tough job. Try to chill out….nobody wants to have to duct tape you to your seat. HTH.

One tip I haven’t heard mentioned, which I learned the hard way, is don’t wear pants that don’t gather at the ankle. When I started as a FA 38 years ago, crew members at our airline were not allowed to sit, or close their eyes to sleep, on any flight less than 12 and a half hours in the air. Yes, I have always tended to keep my belt buckled throughout the flight and my vent open. And I also tend to look for a seat behind the wings - there’s always a rush off when you arrive but if I can spend an extra 15 minutes reading in peace, it’s a bonus for me and usually not that much of a delay by the time I get through passport control etc. Generally there is a far higher chance of an empty seat beside me doing that too. So being the safest seats onboard is just another reason to choose that far back.

Hi, Megan. Your videos are always super helpful. These are my observations from flying since 2020. (1) I wear a mask whenever i am in public, especially on planes. I am 67 years old, have done a lot of flying over the past 40-odd years, and almost always got an upper respiratory infection (a couple of times going lower and ending up as pneumonia) every time i flew. Since starting to wear a mask, i have not gotten one of these miserable illnesses. (2) I just can’t tolerate running through airports to try to make connections any more. Often there is no option but a flight that gives you less than an hour of connection time. After my last experience, i will fly only nonstops unless it’s an absolute emergency. (3) People really do smoke in restrooms, especially on Amtrak. I’ve just been diagnosed with asthma, that I’ve probably had for decades but never had the right language to get a doctor’s attention. Any kind of smoke is a killer for me. Back in the 1980’s, when there were still smoking sections on planes, if i were seated in or near the last row of nonsmoking, i was in torment for the whole flight, breathing through layers of Kleenex or scarves. I am grateful that, at least on planes, my chance of exposure to smoke is much lower than anywhere else outside of my home. (4) There are all kinds of germs on those surfaces you mention, so i appreciate your suggestions for avoiding them. (5) I do indeed always keep my seatbelt on, as you do! Thanks so much.

I am always the last to leave the Aircraft after landing so I do get in anybody’s Way. Most Passengers can’t get on the Aircraft quickly enough and the same People can’t get off quickly enough either. Tip - the Back Row is most convenient for the Rear Emergency Exits (which I have never needed - yet). Happy Landings

As a former USAF crew chief, knew many of these things. I trade the minimal "safety" of the back seat( what seat is safe from 35,000 feet?) for the more usable middle near the wings seat that gives a slightly better ride as that is the most stable part of the aircraft.The air flow I hardly use due to cleaning issues. But when I do its always directed away from me similar to the air curtain you have at some stores. Maintenance of commercial aircraft is pathetic, compared to what we had to do each day for our aircraft to even takeoff.

Always wear my seat belt although loosened after take off. Wipe my total area down everytime. Don't worry about the safest seat as survivability is close to zero. Try to always direct flight, if we can't we will overnight at the layover. Good tips as usual.

“Direct” does not mean non-stop, only that you won’t change planes when you do stop.

I think one of the most important issues is to have fastened your seat belt all the time. It has not to be extremely tightly, but in a way where you are not kicked out of your seat in case of severe air turbulences. In former times when I was younger, I flew quite a bit around the world and experienced sometimes awful turbulences where things were flying all around. This is very scary. Calming and instructing words of the crew may be very helpful in these situations. This, however, was not always the case. Heinz, 64, GER

haha, every time i check a video of yours it only makes 'flying' so much more complicated that i leave it all together.
@Hmy87996 ай бұрын
Buttt you didn’t mention that the further back your seats are, the more you feel any turbulence! The degree to which turbulence is felt in the back row in comparison to over the wing or at the front makes a huuuge difference

Yes, I always keep my seat belt fastened...maybe loose but buckled. I have been in my share of down drafts that could put you on the ceiling of the plane in a split second.

I am about 100 pounds overweight. When I first board the aircraft, I show my boarding pass, with my seat assignment, to the flight attendant and request a seatbelt extender. On some aircraft the seatbelts can buckle, on others I need those extra inches. The attendants use the extenders for the preflight safety demonstration, (where they fasten the seatbelt). After the flight, I return the extender to the flight attendant as I exit the plane, so they don't have to go looking for it. Also, I am one of those who keep my seatbelt fastened, just in case. No that I think about it.., maybe I should carry my own "sippy" cup, to prevent spills during turbulence.

While similar, the live demo kit has its own seat belt, and we store the extensions in a separate compartment to be given to pax who request them.

I always keep my seltbelt on because clear-air turbulence can't be detected by pilots. You can crack your head on the bulkhead above you if you're not buckled in. I also only order a cold drink (not coffee) because the flight attendants are also at the mercy of air pockets, and which would you rather have spilled on you?

ALWAYS WEAR YOUR SEATBELT. I was Air Traffic Control. Surprised we don’t have more air incidents. I suggest watching MAYDAY to learn what can go wrong, and how important the flight crew and ATC are to safety.

Non-Stop Flights are even better than Direct Flights. Direct flight means you don't change planes BUT you do have a stop(or two...). Non-stop is well, no stops.

I try to sit over the wing so that I feel less turbulence. I will, however, sit in the back of the plane on short flights if there aren't any seats near the wing.

I was in a plane crash. I learned many things about what happens when planes are going down. I plan to write a book soon. I’m getting older and my story needs to be told. I’ve struggled because I’m disabled now due to the damage to my spine. You are definitely in someone else’s hands when you fly. Always buy insurance when you purchase your ticket. But don’t fear God is always with you. Even on a plane.

I had been observing your air vent rule religiously since a small child. Ever since I started closing it as soon as I sat down, I've never had a head cold since.

Ive been fortunate to stay well after flying, but i dont touch things if i dont have to. I always put down a napkin, and i keep hand sanitizer in reach. I do always keep the air on me, and i dont unbuckle unless i need to go to the restroom. I treat riding in an airplane like riding in a car. You never know hat could happen, and my shoes do not come off. I also spray my shoes with lysol as soon as I get home. If I've been in a restroom.

Clear air turbulence is actually the biggest risk. Can´t be predicted and happens with good weather. So, it´s better to always keep your seat belts fasten and stay out of your seat the least you can. I fly a lot. Not afraid of flying. It´s very safe. But when I go to the toilet, I always think that a turbulence might happen. Thanks for the video.

I once got the rear seat by default selection on a long haul flight. It semed to double the feel of any turbulence whilst being around the wings significantly lessened it. Or at least that's how I perceive things. On a safety note I've never been overly concerned with seat belts. They ain't going to save you if the plane goes down. At least until about 3 weeks ago. I was in Bangkoks Suvarnabhumi Airport when the Philippines London flight made its emergency landing. 1 fatality multiple injury. Turbulence had suddenly dropped the plane smashing anyone not belted in into the ceiling. To make matters worse they were serving breakfast, boiling water heavy carts smashing around. It got a lot of local coverage. Certainly belted up on the way home. A lesson more effective than the hundreds of safety videos I watched over the last 30 years.

I had one of those flights where we made a stop but a few of us were continuing on so we didn’t have to get off the plane. Before this stop, I watched a kid in front of me constantly pick his nose then proceed to touch the window, the arm rests, the tray table (banging it up and down), and the entire chair for the bulk of the flight. They ended up getting off, but the only thing I saw the cleaning crew do while we were waiting for the new people to board was remove trash from seat backs. I was horrified when someone new sat in that seat, having no idea what transpired. It makes me cringe thinking about what I’ve potentially sat in

The reason they ask us to open the window shades is so if a bird flies into the engine someone has a chance of seeing it and reporting it. At least this is what was told to us by a flight attendant.
