Why isn't a doppler effect used in your modern sensors instead of using moving parts?

Looking to replace ST60+ sensors. I have two sizes of removable sensor housings, one is smaller for the paddlewheel sensor, the other is larger, for temp/depth. Is there any chance this sensor would fit these existing housings?

just installed but out of the water it doesn't show the depth! how do I know if it works? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Why not use your GPS, that will never foul... why do we care if we are doing 5 knots or 5.5 knots, have seen or heard about the unit coming apart, water rushing in....

some people cannot afford the newer gps that can show water speed.

There can be a significant difference between speed over ground which is from your GPS and speed through water which is measured by a paddlewheel. Powerboaters might not care so much but sailing captains care a lot.

It allows for accurate trim setting. You’ve seen “or” heard? Did you mean “and” or do you just know people, who know other people who may have seen or heard this.
