Another one is they cast Kareem Abdul Jubar to make fun of other films where they cast sports stars that can't act... so they amplified the effect by having him read large cue cards held off camera so you can seek him look back and forth. But it gets better because he's personally offended at disparaging comments to his sports performance... and then when carried out of the cockpit he's wearing his Jersey and shorts. But I also love the "so Billy, do you like gladiator films?"

And with this movie having become such a classic, younger viewers often don't realize that until Airplane! happened, they (Peter Graves too) WERE almost exclusively serious actors -- the prime examples of square-jawed humorless action heroes. Leslie Nielsen especially: this movie literally reinvented his career, as previously nobody had imagined he could be this funny. Afterward, he became stuck in a new stereotype, as someone audiences expected to be hilarious.

What I love about Airplane! is that rather than use comic actors, they hired straight actors and the jokes hit so much harder because they're not delivered in a goofy way but instead everyone is completely straight and deadpan. Fun fact - the black guys created the jive language on their own and incorporated it into their audition which won them the part. Barbara Billingsley (lady who spoke to them) was invited to make a cameo for that scene as she was a popular actress who portrayed the stereotypical 1950's American housewife & mom in the sitcom, Leave it to Beaver (1957). Not only did they have to teach her the language but she enjoyed doing it!

For those too young to remember such things, the white woman speaking "jive" to the black passengers was Barbara Billingsley, who played the Mom, June Cleaver on the TV show Leave it to Beaver in the 1950's and 60's. The guy waiting in the taxi at the airport was Howard Jarvis, a very influential tax reformer when this movie came out. It's funnier with him because he would *NEVER* have put up with being charged for no service. Robert Stack is doing a parody of the part he played in the 1954 movie, The High and the Mighty. Airplane is an almost scene for scene remake of the 1957 film Zero Hour! There is a great video that does a side by side comparison of the two films, found here, kzbin.info/www/bejne/bl7ZY3V-g6eJedU

After long, utterly exhausting jet-lagged flights I told these airport religious soliciters 2 words, and those 2 words WEREN'T "happy birthday." After so many millions of passenger complaints, LAX finally banned panhandling on airport property completely, because these religious fanatics were such lying, scamming pieces of bowel-hemmorhaged shit, constantly harrassing passengers, there was no reason for these money-begging THINGS to infest LAX and make life miserable for passengers passing through it. I used to get so furious at these LAX religious money-beggars jumping in my face to badger me for spare change, I used to tell them - shall we say - to violently perform two illegal actions on themselves, one resulting directly from the other.

One joke that goes over the heads of most people below a certain age is the old guy in the taxi. What's funny is that he is Howard Jarvis, who had not done any movies (as far as I know) but was famous (notorious) in the 70s as a crusader against taxes and was the driving force behind a ballot proposal in California that led to a lot of budget troubles. The first time I saw this, loooong ago, I recoghized him right away but had no idea of why he would be in the movie.

The lady translating jive was Barbara Bilingsley. She played the mom on the old t.v. show, Leave It To Beaver. I read that Harriet Nelson from "Ozzy and Harriet" had turned down this part in the movie because of the swearing and then later regreted it .

Peter Graves, who played Captian Over( a serious actor much like a majority of the cast), really had a hard time with the lines he was given, but still be remembered more for that movie than ' Mission Impossible'.

The great joy of watching this reaction - for those of us who know the movie TOO well - is watching Matthew, knowing the joke is coming and trying to keep a poker face, his face straining harder and harder through the setup so he won't spoil the payoff. SO many jokes and references are probably lost to folks who didn't grow up with all the references they lampoon.... from Tasters Choice coffee commercials, to all the 1970s disaster movie tropes, to - as that lady said "that Ronald Reagan film" (Knute Rockne - All American), and seeing all those stoic 1950s & 60s leading men ....Bridges (Sea Hunt), Stack (The Untouchables),, Graves (Mission: Impossible) and of course the king of deadpen - Neilsen. AND "June Cleaver" speaking 'jive'..... It was the first time any of them had broken their screen stereotypes. I had to see this multiple times because people in the theater laughed so hard at one joke, they drowned out the next three. This movie raised the bar so high, I think it deserves to be in a category of its own. It can't be surpassed - but maybe it can be equaled if someone rounds up the current generation of serious leading men & convinces them to lampoon their screen image, throwing in a few hundred TikTok meme references, film & videogame tropes & other current cultural jabs that would match what the Airplane! folks did to the decades of pop culture that led up to their film.

One of the things that made this classic even funnier was that Leslie Neilson, Robert Stack (Ted's old commander), Peter Graves (pilot) Lloyd Bridges (chief air traffic controller) had all been famous as dramatic actors (50s-70s) in movies and TV. Watching them play these roles straight, especially considering some of the incredibly silly lines they had to deliver without even cracking a smile was pure comedy gold! BTW - this is my first time on your channel and I am having a blast - you guys are so much fun!

A lot of the comedies from the 70s-80s that I have fond memories of, like Vacation, don’t hold up as well on repeat viewing. They have moments that are still hilarious, but more dead weight than I remember. Airplane hasn’t aged a day (other than obvious cultural references). Every second is amazing.

Peter Graves, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, and Leslie Nielsen had all had long, successful careers as dramatic actors by the time this was made What made it particularly funny was that they all played their roles completely straight. The two airport workers at the beginning who sent the plane into the airport were played by David and Jerry Zucker, two of the writers and directors of the film, and their mother Charlotte played the makeup lady on the plane.
