I'm surprised this movie was chosen; the low brow humor, pop culture references and slang word play made it hard for Naveed and Mansoor to fully understand.

I always enjoy your reactions. I think the humor in this movie was very specific to American culture and the English language. Many of the jokes do not make sense if you are not from America or speak English, but you two are always so fun to watch every movie. Thank you.

Most of the jokes make no sense if you are from American and were not from the 1970s or before. But sure, this is a movie that in particular seems kind of random to them.

Found your reactions and lack of reactions very entertaining. As others have commented, you have to be American and fluent in the English language to catch the dozens of "play on words" not to mention the pop culture references from the 1980's, which many younger Americans don't understand either. I will help you out on two items: you commented it made no sense to have a bird sitting on the seat with the pilot. The bird was a buzzard, which is a bird that waits for things to die and then eats their dead flesh. The buzzard was sitting there waiting for them to die so it could have a meal. You had to get all those references for it to be funny. Item 2: the girls fighting in the bar were Girl Scouts (we can tell by the uniforms they were wearing). Girl Scouts are known for being honest, upstanding citizens who always do good. The joke is: these two supposedly angelic girls were playing cards for money, cheating at cards and fighting in a sleazy bar. The fact they were even there was funny to Americans.

I think this movie had 3 strikes against it for them: 1) The older pop culture references are hard for modern audiences to pick-up on. 2) A lot of the word-play jokes don’t translate properly to another language (if they are watching a subtitled or dubbed version) and/or require a certain level of English language fluency (if they’re watching it in English). & 3) This type of “low-brow” humor isn’t for everyone.

Naveed's reaction to the naked chest scene wins best reaction!! The combination of shock, and then what looked primal to me, the tongue flicking and blown out cheeks to expose two beautifully puckered lips. I laughed sooo hard. I rewatched for Mansoor's reaction to Naveed's. Too funny.

Always puts a smile on my face to know that I am going to watch one of your reaction videos. Please keep them coming. By the way, since you like science fiction. There is an older science fiction movie that nobody has ever reacted to called: “No Escape.” I think you might enjoy it. If you are looking for great movies from the 80’s: The Devils Advocate, The Game, Field of Dreams, Unlawful Entry are fantastic movies.

"drinking problem" is a nice way in English to say alcoholic. So they're making fun of that expression, like his problem is that he always misses his mouth. This is probably the funniest reaction to this movie I've ever seen. I don't think they understood a single joke. lol Almost every single scene or sentence was some kind of joke. But I think for most of the jokes, you had to live in the US back in the 70s to understand them. Most of us are old enough to still get the jokes. Even young Americans watching this movie miss half of them. Back in the 70s, there were a series of disaster movies about plane crashes. This movie was trying to make fun of them.
@TheJudiBambiPurrsParadox11 күн бұрын
Now that you've seen a bunch of American movies, you can identify the jokes referencing classic older movies, that this movie and other spoof/parody movies, like Spaceballs, love to do! *_Parody takes a specific literary work and exaggerates its form and language, often replacing serious subjects with silly ones. Spoof is where a writer takes the conventions of a well-known genre and pokes fun at them. Finally, satire uses ridicule, exaggeration and irony to comment on society, religion and politics._*

Kudos to you for watching this movie as it is very difficult to catch all the jokes when you are a non-native speaker. There are many American pop culture references and innuendos which are not politically correct these days… They play a lot with cultural stereotypes. There are also many wordplays that are hard to grasp when you are not very fluent in American English.
@jpiccone17 күн бұрын
I think it would be difficult for you to find this film very funny because it's full of American cultural reference from 45 years ago, and lots of wordplay. For example, "drinking problem" means alcoholism, but Ted has a literal problem drinking things. Or whem the old lady asked him if he was nervous then asked him if it was his first time, she meant his first time flying, not his first time being nervous.

There are a lot of nods to American blockbusters in ‘Airplane!’: movies from the seventies like ‘Saturday Night Fever’ or ‘the Godfather’ but also to older classics like ‘From Here to Eternity’ and B Disaster Movies, a successful genre in the sixties and seventies. I feel that most of these parodies are now getting lost in translation for younger generations as they do not get the original references. ‘Airplane!’ belongs to the pastiche genre.
