About my Johnny comment, it seems its a bit muddled. My "trying to be stereotypical" statement was meant as he was trying to lean into the character trope, not that he was trying to be gay. Although, from what I gather now, he was just an over the top personality even outside of this movie. My apologies to the Johnny fans. 😂 Perhaps the character will grow on me with future watches now knowing he improvised most of his lines.

Few people ever catch this, but the old lady who "speaks jive," played the mom on Leave it to Beaver. They literally found the whitest person they could to play that part. Anyway, on the Johnny subject, that actor was a highly talented improve artist. He was actually given the script and allowed to write his own lines. He's my favorite part of this movie. I mean, come on. "I can make a hat or I can make a brotch or I can make a pterodactyl..." or "It looks like a big Tylonal." Those are funny lines. Oh, and I got married at 38. ...Divorced at 41. You're not wrong. There were a lot of jokes that referenced other current and past things. For example, the "Jim never has a second cup of coffee at home," was a reference to a coffee commercial. Two points… 1) OMG, I’ve seen this movie about a thousand times and never noticed him walk through the mirror! You’ve just earned a new subscriber, LOL. 2) I used to do some work in TV (no, I’m not anything special, hehehe… just local community broadcast). They definitely had green screen when this was produced. It might’ve been in its early years (I don’t know the exact invention date, but by the mid-80s we already had green screen at our community programming station… surely, a mere few years earlier they already had it). Oh, I’m also impressed at the “dated” references you got. I’m guessing you still missed some (like I’m guessing you don’t get the internal monologue about the coffee… that’s a take off on a commercial from back then). Kudos for picking up what you did. It’s amazing… even without the dated references people still think this movie is hysterical. Can you imagine back when it came out, when these references were fresh and everyone got them? Just beyond words funny. Could be one of the funniest movies ever made.

Many don’t recognize the intentional farce of appearing serious (most folks think Leslie Nielsen is a comedic actor… up to this point he wasn’t… he was a serious actor… so you have him, Peter Graves, Robert Stack and others… this was an intentional effort). Then there are the dates references… like Ethel Merman and the coffee commercial. How many folks realize that Barbara Billingsley, a 1960s perfect, stereotypical housewife from Leave It To Beaver was the jive talking woman? And how many of today’s era recognize the iconic JJ Walker as the airplane “mechanic?”? And how many of the modern era realizes that airport proselytizing was common back in the day? So, so, so, so, sooooooooo many of the jokes here have been lost to time. I’m just glad you enjoyed it at all. Trust me, for old people like me, people of that era, it’s 10x more funny. Before Airplane; but Leslie Nelson, and Lloyd Bridgers (father of Beau and Jeff Bridges), were both serious actors.Bridges; who was best known for Spartacus, Sea Hunt, and Disney's 20, 000 Leagues Under the Sea. Nelson has a lot of minor roles, but was best known for Forbidden Planet. None of the actors were picked for their comedic chops. On the contrary; they were chosen to deliver the lines in a serious manor, making the jokes that much more comedic. Police Squad was next, but was short lived. So the creators of Airplane, and Police Squad, came up with The Naked Gun. Bridge got the role in Hot Shots (A parody of Top Gun); because of his role in Airplane.

There’s a video that compares Zero Hour to Airplane and all the lines that Airplane copied word for word and then took a step further.

This was the most enjoyable reaction to this movie I've seen. Some people try to get analytical with it and it's not that kind of movie. It's an in-the-moment movie and you just have to let it flow over you. 👍🏽

You need to react to Valley Girl (1983) Nicolas Cage’s 1st lead role. RomCom. Think Romeo & Juliet in the valley. The soundtrack is “totally tubular ya know”. No one else has reacted to it. Be the first. Also has the maid from Clue as the mom and the dad was in Apocalypse Now.

Did you catch that even though the airplane us a jet the background sound is propellers? Hardly ever do reactors catch this.

Love this movie and consider it to be one of the all time great comedies, but I understand how someone younger wouldn't find it as funny, quite a few of the references are rather dated. For instance, the old lady speaking jive with the brothers, is Barbara Billingsly aka June Cleaver from Leave it to Beaver, one of the most iconic television shows of all time and her character was considered the perfect suburban wife and mother! Today it would be like Snoop and Dr. Dre with Betty White translating! With a couple of exceptions, the entire cast is playing against stereotype, as just about all of them were known for dramatic roles before this. The sequel isn't bad at all, and you may end up actually liking it more, as some of the references hold up a bit better. I would suggest that you either watch or are at least rather familiar with 2001 A Space Odessey though.

I dunno. I've seen a LOT of "younger people" STILL greatly enjoy this movie. But yeah, a LOT of references (or even props) would be VERY hard to catch for people much younger than me. (I'm 51.) Like (as you said) June Cleaver "speaking Jive", the woman whose husband drank TWO cups of coffee, even things like the old-style credit card machines (complete with carbon paper & paper receipts) would be hard to catch. (I'm sure even the telephone booths & LAN line phones will become a "What is that thing?" thing, in upcoming decades.) Not to mention even MORE obscure comedic things like the identity of the guy sitting in the cab, the "married announcement couple" and other stuff would be COMPLETELY missed. (Thankfully, that doesn't prevent anyone from still enjoying most of the jokes)

Ha! You're one of the only reactors who didn't shut the movie off during the closing credits so you got the very last joke of the movie. Yeah, it's just a goofball movie, a lot of fun in a crowded theater. No need to apologize for ANY comments you say about any movie, and in this case, the Johnny character remarks were fine. It's funny: at the time, I never thought of him as a gay character but now I see it clearly! Anyways, see you on the next vid!

Yeah, man - Well done. I've watched a lot of reactions to this movie - very few hang out for that last taxi bit, which makes for a really good closer. A lot of this humor is a spoofing of current culture and if you were too young to know the references, you miss out. Remember the "Jim never has a second cup at home"/"Jim never throws up at home" scenes? kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3uXnHZ8Z5eCaNk Back then you couldn't change the TV channel without landing on this comercial.
@JayBondReacts2 жыл бұрын
Haha That joke makes a lot more sense now. I figured it was a reference to something. 😂 They really nailed it!
@Blue-qr7qe2 жыл бұрын
@@JayBondReacts It was easy - they used the actual actress from the comercial. The beach scene was a spoof of a scene from the end-of-the-world movie FROM HERE TO ETERNITY (1953) (waiting for the fall-out clouds to reach Australia after a nuclear holocaust). kzbin.info/www/bejne/bYXPdYGDmMSbfM0 I liked that one of two fish next to them was a catfish (a freshwater fish). ZAZ didn't believe in missed opportunities.

Airplane is very hit or miss. I enjoy the deadpan humor and a lot of the reaction/sight gags, but not all of it lands for me. Johnny in particular seems to divide reactors. I enjoy his boundless enthusiasm, mischievous personality, and the way his face drops when someone interrupts his fun, but he's not for everyone. A fun cameo is James Hong as the Japanese officer who commits seppuku. For a couple of underrated 80's comedies - Better Off Dead and One Crazy Summer, both with John Cusack and Curtis Armstrong
