Airplane Disasters Spark Fear of Flying Across US

The string of airplane disasters is triggering fear of flying across America. Terror gripped passengers aboard a United Airlines flight in Houston when flames shot out of an engine. The take-off was aborted and passengers evacuated down emergency chutes. In Philadelphia, investigators recovered the black box recorder they hope will answer the baffling mystery of why a medevac plane fell out of the sky. The crash killed seven and left 22 injured.

As a pilot, something can always happen that is out of your control. I survived a plane crash at Richmond International Airport in Richmond, VA on April 11, 2011 due to catastrophic left engine failure of my aircraft immediately after takeoff. I suffered 65% burns, 68 total surgeries (so far), 2 amputated fingers on my right hand, a completely rebuilt nose, and hundreds upon hundreds of hours of physical, occupational, and psychological therapy. There are risks to everything we do in life, and some things are simply out of our control. I truly mean this when I say live each day to the fullest, tell your loved ones how much you love them, and be grateful for everything you have. I received a 2nd chance at life, and I’m thankful for that every single day.

my father is a pilot! ✈️he gets tested every six months and if he just barely fails, he no longer flies. He also gets put in a flight simulator that simulates every bad thing that could happen in the air, and just like before, if he fails, he no longer flies. there are no other jobs that do that, so please take my word for it, flying is by far safer than any kind of transportation here on land.

Yeah... but here's an argument that cannot be refuted. You can survive ground accidents but you cannot survive an air accident. The chances of surviving an air accident is almost next to none. I understand that there are more ground accidents than air accident but the survivability of ground accidents are so much higher than air accidents. If I wasn't so afraid of dying, I would have become a pilot. I love the idea of flying and the difficulty isn't the issue. It's the chance of dying that's the issue.

I'm a very nervous flier myself, but I also view it this way. The reason we see all these plane incident videos on the news is because they are so rare to happen. I work right next to the biggest airport in Florida and we have plans that land and take-off over our building every day. I have one big trip this year where it's going to be my longest flight and I am rightfully nervous overall, but I won't allow my nerves and these recent incidents to deter me from going. We take risks every day of our lives and sometimes we know it, and sometimes we don't. If we live in the fear of something happening to us, we won't ever get the chance to experience life to the fullest.

There truly is no reason to fear flying more than many things we already do on a daily basis. You could get in a car accident with an intoxicated or distracted driver, you could choke on food, you could get hit by lightning, tons of things. Life is fragile no matter what. Before this tragedy, the last fatal airline crash in the US was in 2009.. nearly 16 years ago. There are 45,000 flights per day in the US alone. Pilots have years of training and experience, and they too care about their lives. Air traffic control policies will only get safer too. Also, airliners have MULTIPLE redundant systems for every safety critical system that could fail. Independent hydraulic systems, electrical systems, fuel systems, even if an engine failed the other one can get you to an alternate airport safely. It may SEEM like “planes are falling out of the sky all the time”, but it’s only because it IS so rare, that the media puts these accidents under a microscope. Any form of transportation has risks. This one happens to be the safest. I give my most heartfelt condolences to the passengers and their loved ones in this crash, but you are MUCH safer flying than driving. MUCH.

They by no means insulted the victims of the families of both recent fatal crashes they simply stated that air travel is by far our safest mode of transportation and that the recent media fearmongering on it is unneccessary but is there due to how rare such an event is. By you posting this comment you are yourself disrespecting those who died in those crashes. You are smudging their name through the dirt just to get yourself some self-gratification over a statistical argument. It's unfortunate that fatal aviation accidents always spark heightened fear around flying. The reality is you're more likely to suffer a fatal car accident than die in a plane crash. At the same time, commercial aviation rests on a very sensitive foundation of trust and confidence that can be easily undermined. It's just one of those industries that demands exceptionalism on every front.

I hope people realize there’s planes flying in the air, taking off, and landing right now. Life doesn’t completely come to a halt when tragic accidents like these happen. You see a crazy car crash and you continue to drive along the same road, taking a risk as you go. It’s your choice wether you let the risks hold you back or not

I just flew back to San Diego from Switzerland through JFK last night and it was smooth like butter. Thousands of flights go out everyday, this doesn’t happen often but when it gets put on the news waves like a wildfire. As it should, but all things considered, flying is still the safest method of travel out there. With all the regulations and standards set in place, there’s a lot more oversight compared to some random driver on the road.

And yet despite that these two events were the first fatal accidents in the united states in over 16 years Meanwhile the number of deaths via cars in the same time reached over 680,000 souls. Two events back to back are scary for sure but this isnt just two events isolated this is two events between 45,000 daily flights for over 16 years. This means that these two events compare to 262,800,000 flights that occured between this time And that is United states numbers alone. This does not include any statistics from other countries. Fact is as much as you may dislike it Air travel is significantly safer than any other mode of transportation do not buy into fearmongering. It is ok to be scared to fly its usual we are creatures of habit and flying goes against habits. But it is not Ok to not inform yourself on how much at risk you truly are and buying into sensationalized fear. If you want something to be scared of be scared of getting on motorcycles after all they have the highest death rate amongst all motor accidents.
