Hi David! The DC "Skymaster" dominated the skies of West-Berlin during the Berlin Airlift (Blockade) of 1948-1949. They were literally landing and taking off at Tempelhof Airport in tandem 24/7. When the Soviets cut off West-Berlin from West Germany by closing the rail and road links, they were left with no option but to keep West-Berlin (literally a heap of rubble with millions of destitute locals and refugees) upright by flying in supplies through the 3 air-corridors they still had. The Soviets thought they could starve out West-Berlin and force the allies to abandon it. But instead, they were resolved to use the air corridors to retain the city as theirs. The allies appealed to all their friends to help. Several countries obliged. It is not widely known that SA sent the more planes and crew than any other country and made a significant contribution to that amazing operation called "Operation Vittles" where Vittles is an old word for food. A Skymaster stands on the grounds of the Allied Museum in Berlin.

When my wife worked for SAA she was also a flight attendant for the SA Historic Flight, so she worked as cabin crew on the DC-3 and DC-4 as well as the Junkers JU-52 when it was still flying. They would wear period "air hostess" uniform including the white gloves and fly charter trips around Southern Africa, sometimes in conjunction with Rovos Rail or the Blue Train. They also took part in the Berlin Airlift commemoration in 2000, ZS-AUB spent a couple of months in Europe touring several countries. For the return flight to South Africa my wife worked the 2 week tour from Berlin via Venice, Istanbul, Aden, Zanzibar and Victoria Falls (to name a few). SAA has 2 DC-4s, one of which is the last one ever built.

It really hurts me to know that in its heyday, SAA had well over 100 aircraft in service, flying to Europe, USA South Amerca, Hong Kong , Aussie and Africa. It was also the second oldest airline in the world. What happened ? 😢

I remember when SAA received its first B747-400. They hosted an open day for the SAA staff to have a look at it parked in a huge hangar at the then called Jan Smuts airport. My father was a technician at SAA and as such I was lucky enough as a teenager at that time to go and see that fascinating airplane. I always wanted to be a pilot and I remember walking around the airplane with my jaw dragging on the ground with utter amazement. Now the interesting thing about this story is that at that time the dream of flying for me was an impossibility, especially financially. But as fate has it, I ended up after lots of sacrifice, finally managing to get my pilot’s license and eventually my career took me all the way to flying 747s today as a Captain with Cargolux flying both B747-400s and B747-8s. And I have even flown with the very pilots who flew that 747 parked in the hangar I once visited. Yes…. aviation is a small world indeed.

I was there the day it arrived and taxied in to park in front of Hangar 8. My wife worked in SAA Flight Operations at the time, 42 years service in total. We still have the model 747-400 that was the table centrepiece at the welcome function, with the specially labelled stand: "First SAA Boeing 747-400 - 1991-01-20"

This is the first confirmation that I've had in years, that the Connie is still around. It still looks like it could be restored to flying condition. When I last saw it about 25 years ago, it was suffering from corrosion from the piles of pigeon poop. To the best of my knowledge, there is only one flying example left in the world.

Interesting. The museum management should invest in building a bigger under roof shelter for the bigger planes also. Think in terms of preventative conservation these planes must protected against exposure to weather elements such as rusting and sharp sunlight. I would like to make some suggestions👌

How is it possible that those planes are still there, in South Africa if something is not chained down and locked it will be gone by tomorrow. AH, I remember the are going to need a pilot to steal if. That plane look inside like one of the planes I left South Africa in 30 years ago.

Nice video but what you said was the cockpit on the B747 was actually the front of the bottom passenger deck. The cockpit is on the upper deck and has a totally different set-up from the passenger configuration. It is full of flight instruments and very unique place.
