The annual inspection is in full swing at TAS Aviation in Defiance, Ohio (DFI). They are the best Twin Cessna shop and lucky for us, they know these planes better than anyone. Each year during the planes required annual inspection I plan to show a few specialized components of the work they do to keep this planes in top shape. The focus on this video is the 500 hour inspection on the engine's magnetos and the gear inspection.
Special thanks to the guys at TAS for taking the extra time to film some of the process for me to share with ya'll. Thank you Matt Cellar, Jay Mauer, David Vermillion and Brent Wiemken!

Reminds one of the old maxim, "A pearl of great price is not for the asking. I fly a RV-12 and my shop has found some safety of flight issues during the condition inspections, and I'm darn glad they did. This video is testament to the value of a shop that is experienced in your type, calls the balls and strikes and does first rate work. But, this piece is even more a testament to your dedication to the responsibility that comes from aircraft ownership. There is no "pulling over to the berm" when the wheels leave the runway. Kudos.

Well, it's 49 years old - a 1972 model. Having worked in aircraft maintenance, back when, for quite some time, the young man giving the explanations on the gear was excellent. He IS an aircraft mechanic. I see that this plane had a "fractional owner," at least at one time - now I think it's an Individual Owner. If so, it will be a massive amount of money to cover all of these repairs. However, if you have the money, it's NO problemo. Enjoyed watching the guys do their work.

What you said at the end of the video about very few shops know how to correctly rig a 310 gear is spot on. The gear on the 300/400 series Cessna's is a weak point. If they are not rigged properly, all kinds of bad stuff happens. Great video and kudos to TAS Aviation.

An awesome techie video for an engineering technical brain like mine! Super kudos to TAS for them videoing some really important finds and doing their thorough checks and repairs. Nothing quite like good documented procedures, checklists, time expired parts replaced, certified mods kits, taking the time to do the job properly! Well worth it as this plane and every other plane too, carries precious people! I'd be keeping that nose gear bolt to mount on some nice wood somewhere to keep at home, as a reminder of money well spent! A plane, 2 props, 2 engines and 2+ beautiful people saved from potential nose gear fail injury. Love your channel Kevin and Jaime. Cheers and best wishes from David down under in NZL :)

As a former USAF Aircraft mechanic, I was truly geeking out watching this inspection. Sheetmetal work is no casual task, glad to see they used a lot of Clecos. The cost of repairs in top boat yards probably not that different. The "luxury" I see with a plane is the ability to go a lot further away for repairs vs. for example areas that have very limited boat yards so they can basically charge whatever they want.

Loose control rod jam nuts. Most common failure item on condition inspections, and you had two of them. :) That shop is doing some quality work!

I wonder if that is from the repaint, when they had to disassemble all of the gear doors?

There are owners who want it done "cheap" and owners who want it done "RIGHT". You are the latter. Fixing airplanes... it's expensive. The alternative is the safety of everyone on board. Great video always...

A thorough look is expensive - but can extend your life expectancy! Glad you know them - they look as if they have done this a couple of times before.

Pilots and the general flying public.....Thank your A&P Mechanics daily for keeping your airplanes airworthy... As you can see, we deserve every penny you spend on keeping you and the flying public safe, GA or Commercial... Luckily, 95% of us avionics and A&P's techs love what we do and have the integrity to DO WHAT'S RIGHT!!! You're welcome!!!! Contrary to popular belief, A&P mechanics are not UNSKILLED LABOR... This should prove the point of all the skills needed to maintain an aircraft, small to heavies....

Wow man, deep respect for first of all showing this stuff. And also awesome the TAS crew was able to document parts of the process for you! They look very skilled, making it a pleasure to watch too. This video is kind of an advertisement for their business and as far as I've seen it, they well deserved it!

Ahh, brings back nightmares...I mean memories. I bought my 310 with 8000 hours on it. My dad and I had to do this plus a lot more. Still loved the airplane. You're probably fixing a lot of stuff that has been wrong for a long time.

Really appreciate you sharing this aspect of GA. This is where you decide if the lady needs to know and see how she reacts. We know she loves traveling and I believe she likes the private part. Wanna play, gotta pay. Hopefully she will ultimately feel safer looking forward to this year’s trips.

I lived in Defiance for 16 years before moving to the Midwest. I used to rent the Cardinal RG from them, which I believe they still have. Tony always had twins in the hanger being repaired, this was over 20 years ago. I was told that owners came from all corners of the country to get their annuals done here. I actually miss Defiance, my daughter stills live there.
