I've seen Jethro Tull live 26 times in my life - it is about the entire experience. Ian Anderson is a self-taught multi-instrumental genius who takes his concert performances very seriously. He treats his live shows like a business man whose job is to entertain. He brings wit, intelligence, athleticism, theatrics, humor, social commentary, and a bit of tongue-in-cheek spice to his concerts.

Another funny story about is daughter. When she was very young, she signed up to take flute lessons. She came home and showed her dad how she was taught to hold the flute. He saw and realized he was doing it all wrong so he taught himself again, but using the proper hold on the flute then. I find the group entirely entertaining. I got to see them 3 times in the 70's and they always did a fantastic show. You can't say Ian isn't a musician as he played 2 instruments in this song and also does acoustic guitar and his songwriting is stellar.

Great reaction. And for the record, Ian Anderson is quite a technical player for sure. Incredibly creative and highly talented. And he's a master of playing the flute in that way, it's amazing. But he's also a multi-instrumentalist. It's very difficult for me to think of it as primarily entertainment because most of us fell in love with the songs and bought the albums and played the hell out of them, it's just that if you were lucky enough to go see them live, you got an incredible dramatic show on top of it. Many great rock bands of the era had a lot of crowd-oriented entertainment going on at their live concerts, even as they were totally rocking out.

Ian Anderson is pure genius. Here is what Schopenhauer says about genius: "It is not only in the activity of his highest powers that the genius surpasses ordinary people. A man who is unusually well-knit, supple and agile, will perform all his movements with exceptional ease, even with comfort, because he takes a direct pleasure in an activity for which he is particularly well-equipped, and therefore often exercises it without any object. Further, if he is an acrobat or a dancer, not only does he take leaps which other people cannot execute, but he also betrays rare elasticity and agility in those easier steps which others can also perform, and even in ordinary walking." As with Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee, it is pure hypnotic joy to behold the rare true genius.

Tull is a lot about both entertaining and music. What Ian does is best described as theatrical clowning that dates back to Shakespearian stages. Their musicianship is remarkable and nearly everyone on stage is multi-instrumentalist. Martin Barre can shred guitar with the best. You have to remember that these guys were able to go onstage in the 70's and reproduce highly complicated arrangements of very long songs with very little technical assists.

They took on the persona of traveling troubadours - "Renaissance" rock/jazz/fusion/prog/blues/and more. Ian Anderson was (and still is) a musical and lyrical genius. The music is most important, but the presentation is what brought the crowds. There is always a message - sometimes obvious, most times allegorical. They crossed all genres - much like Pink Floyd and Steely Dan, there was no way to pigeonhole them to a specific category. A truly unique band like no others, before or since. Commenters below have warned of the "rabbit hole" you're entering here - IMO, the JT catalog is more like a deep mine shaft, with literally dozens of side tunnels (each offering a new surprise). Have fun with these.

From Ian Anderson's outfit this looks like the "Songs from the Wood" tour. In any case this was the final part of their (always long) encore, Locomotive breath morphed into "Land of Hope and Glory" (for the balloons launched into the Audience) and then back into the final few lines of "Back Door Angels" a song which started their encore a few songs back. He started the show with the red bowler hat on his head, which lasted for about an hour.... and placed it back on his head at the end of the show. Tulls live shows were always full of entertainment, theatricals, and energy.... as well as absolute magnificent musicianship.

She was biologically caught between genders and her parents opted to raise her as a male .
