Apple AirPods Max ANC is definitely worse than that of the Sony WH-1000XM4. "The ANC of the Apple AirPods Max works up to 4.4 dB less effectively after a firmware update. Over the past few months, numerous users on the web have wondered why the active noise cancellation of their AirPods Max (about 500 Euros on Amazon) no longer works as well as it did at launch. Due to the timing of the reports, it quickly became clear that the cause was probably the firmware update 4E71. Rtings has now managed to test the noise cancellation of AirPods Max with the old and the new firmware to finally clarify what impact the update has on the ANC of the over-ear headphones. Apparently, there are definitely bigger differences, because while low frequencies could still be suppressed by up to 19.92 dB at launch, this value is now only 15.53 dB. The drop is not quite as dramatic for medium frequencies, but instead of the original 27.41 dB, disturbing ambient noise is now only attenuated by 26.31 dB in this frequency range. In the high-frequency range, the noise suppression even works about 0.45 dB more effectively than before. Rtings has reduced the ANC rating of the headphones from 9.0 to 8.3 points according to the new measurement results. One possible explanation for this change is that the aggressive suppression of low frequencies can lead to a feeling of pressure, since the brain can interpret the missing low frequencies as a pressure difference between the inner ear and the pinna. I tried them both and had the opposite experience. In terms of audio quality, the Sony XM5s are clearly better, but as for ANC, they absolutely sucked in comparison to the XM3s, XM4s, and AirPods Max. I personally also love the ability to switch between different devices seamlessly, I kept having to go onto the Sony App (or Bluetooth for iMac/bootcamp) to switch between my iPad, iPhone, iMac, and Windows Bootcamp. I haven't tested anything but the WH-1000XM3's and they were decent. I've just heard from many reviews Sony has better noise cancelling than Bose and apple(airpods max).

But it just annoying that battery on the airpod max is so shit, like sometimes i walk out the house without expecting 10% battery, however sony manage to get 3 hours of listening being 10%, but the airpod max only 1 hour 15 or 20 mins. I've had the WH-1000XM5 for over 10 months, and the mic sucks d*ck, lmao. The mic on my Edifier TWS1 Pro was better. In terms of audio, they are pretty solid however, when you turn the volume up over 80-90% , they start to distort the sound. The ANC is world class, and the ambient mode is really good. Overall pretty solid headphones, a bit overpriced tho 😅. I use them with my S23 tho.

I own XM5 and before I bought this I have tried airpods max too. By far when it comes to Noise Cancellation and bass, Sony wins and if you appreciate more clarity and ecosystem then apple would be your choise. I was inside the mall when I tried airpods max, although it really eliminated the background noise I could still hear the conversation of the person near me around less than 1 meter. But with this Sony XM5, you could use this if you have a nagging woman 😂 you would thought you’re deaf I have used this in the gym and I use it when I dont like the gym music. Sony connects automatically to my Iphone 11 pro max if no other devices are connected to my phone too. The only cons I can say about this is that Sony doesn’t have replaceable ear pads that can be bought from their store, you actually have to order it through their customer service.

I have owned apple products since the start. I had airpods 1 and then airpods pro. Both started giving me trouble after a year or 2 max. So i went for sony xm5 as it has a better life time. And trust me its one of my best purchases by far. Its so lightweight and comfortable. The ambient noising is better on apple products the noise cancellation is far better on the headphones. Ambient noise doesnt make sense because you are buying headphones to listen to music and not the background sound. Even if i wanna have a quick chat i just calmly place my hand on the side of the headphone which has a sensor and it puts me on transparency mode for the time being. Its amazing go for it anyday

The Airpods Max are NOT “built like a tank”, they seem to break very easily, which is strange for something made by Apple who tend to have very good machining and build quality. The XM4s sound quality and noise cancelling are both better than the Airpods Max, so the XM5 is likely way better (and cheaper) than the Airpods Max. Though you can currently get a good deal on the XM4s for around £200. The same isnt true for the earbud XM4s though, as they are worse than the Airpods / Airpods pro whatever theyre called, and seem to have issues with the… battery suddenly exploding. Not an issue with the headphone XM4s and XM5s though.

I have max’s and am enjoying them… You don’t get lossless audio… Though audio and experience is still great, I’m comfortable wearing them for long periods, but I have a nice stack of hair to fluff the “weight” even though I think the weight is ok. Def expensive, but still enjoying it. I wear them for 4 -6 hours.
