I'm an airline pilot since 28 years. I see and follow these signs every day. However it was great to see this film and get a recap of the exact definitions. Good job.
@geomodelrailroader9 жыл бұрын
I had to study these when I took aviation in scouts. one thing most pilots should know is if you see a panel marker with a yellow X on a runway don't land that means the airport is closed, under construction, or condemned you should never land a plane at a closed airport, taxi onto an abandoned or closed runway,or use a taxiway that is closed or under construction. during airshows the airport will place lighted X signs on the approaches this way planes coming in will be diverted to other airports.

Another case that deserves attention: an airliner asks the ACC: request descent to FL xxx. ATC responds: "stand by one minute." The ATCo meant to say: "wait, I need time to see whether I can give your clearance now or not"; the pilot waited sixty seconds and begun a descent. People tend to believe and understand what is aligned with their intentions.

Whenever I would work using the ground frequency, I used to add a short reminder/reinforcing message for pilots taxiing to a holding point, right AFTER giving departure instructions, like so: "upon reaching holding POINT, call tower frequency XXX.XX; by adding these few extra words I prevented possible runway incursions. I reasoned that pilots are too busy and the mind retains more easily the last words of messages. Also, I know that rookies tend to adjust themselves to the work environment by copying the behavior of more experienced ATCos, so I encouraged my colleagues to question whatever they knew that they were not fully aware of. It takes a long time to figure out how certain words may be misunderstood. Ambiguity is insidious and expressions like "cleared into position" become part of the aviation jargon, prompting anxious pilots who are eager to depart, to hear "cleared to holding position" and "understand" instead "cleared into position".

Pilots and air traffic controllers should be encouraged to join Forums and discuss super important topics like how misunderstandings happen and what can be done to prevent them, what can be done to give us a hint that we may have been misunderstood... A runway incursion on a military base is a serious offence. You can be apprehended, your driving privilege on the taxiway can be suspended, and a hazard report can be reported out and a letter sent to your squadron commander.

Well you can certainly use closed runways or taxiways for emergencies, so the "any purpose" thing is incorrect. But for normal operations, yes they cannot be used.
@JKevinBrady8014 жыл бұрын
The sad thing is that the pilots were not following basic safety rules, and not only on this flight, but the same plane landing earlier - they simply forgot to put the flaps out - there is a warning horn which would have told them but they had cut the circuit breaker to it - I was on a flight once after a snow storm where we were about to turn onto the runway and the flaps were not out - Do I yell if we start our takeoff role without them? It scared the hll out of me - they did put them out, but much later than usual - I ask the pilots upon deplaning and they said they did it late on purpose so as to avoid snow accumulation on the surfaces - I still wonder if I would have yelled out - or rather die than make a fool out of yourself?

Why don’t airports have traffic lights in taxiways, runways, aprons and other roads? A simple red-green setup would be invaluable in making movement safer and more efficient. You can place them at holding points, junctions of taxiways, junctions of taxiway and runways to the runway and even the runway itself. Also, wouldn’t a set of highway style hazard warning signs be useful?

Jeezuz, runway incursions is a section in a private pilots "special emphasis", the chief pilot at my school always said "they are written in blood", and yet people still make stupid mistakes. Dont get into an aircraft until you are familiar with the airport and ground procedures (vfr at least) with the technology we have today (google earth, airport diagrams right off google, etc) there should be no reason why we have ground incursions, unless your ground control is really stupid :P
