I was there for the arrival on Friday. I was blown away, NEVER thought I'd see a MiG-29 or any even semi-modern Russian jets in the US. This is nothing new for the rest of the world but to see this thing in the US, in my home state of WISCONSIN is just nuts. Amazing livery too. Was there for the show today, and man, when this thing is in burner, you can barely tell, its so quiet. I just wish (although I understand why not) they would have max performed the aircraft for a few turns/passes. Guess I have to go to RIAT to see that. It's just so rare to see foreign modern/semi-modern aircraft performing at airshows in the US. 100% pleasant surprise.

It is smoky with a reason it was made to use crude fuel if need to, the same goes for capability to land or take off on a grass airfield without a problem. Mig 29 have additional engine air intakes on the top of the wing/frame to protect engine from debries, if take off on the grass.

It's a safety feature so debris doesn't go into the engine. There are inlets above where the wing joins the body of the aircraft which provide air for combustion, then these inlets open up to allow more air.

the engine (RD-33) are from the 70s, i think its from poor combustion of the fuel, makes sense alongside the fact that this fighter was meant to be cheap, the MiG-29s companion, the Su-27 had more advanced engines and was more expensive than the MiG-29, these engines smoke much less than the MiG
