This video is a COMPLETELY UNBIASED RV REVIEW of the 2019 Basecamp X by Airstream.
This is a super cool, light, small, modern trailer built with Airstream's long history of quality and longevity in mind. This trailer has the 'off road' package the 'X' which has a lift kit and added protection to the front and windows. In its small light weight package you do still get a very functional kitchen, a wet bath, a cargo door and a large versatile space for sleeping eating and storing your gear. We enjoyed that the Airstream Basecamp X had a slightly more modern look to it but is in fact the same shape as the oldest Airstream out there. An obvious nod to Airstream's history. This trailer has the lowest Airstream price point and is easy to tow.
The Airstream Basecamp X really is for a solo or couple traveller and we would think for short time periods but we do know of people who are traveling long term in one, so it can be done.

Hey Guys. We met in Texas the the RV movie. Hope all is well. Since parking next to you in a 42', we have downsized to a 25' View and its great. Then we moved to Central Oregon....come see us.....and now I am considering shrinking again to the Basecamp 20X to get into the woods more. Great review!

Oh wow, we remember, you were planning to downsize then. So cool to run into you (virtually this time) again. We love the View/Navion too and the new Basecamp, ohhhh we have been trying to find one to review. We can't wait to see it. Oregon eh! Sounds nice. We love Oregon but the Beaver is waiting for us in Indiana and who knows when we will be able to get back there. We are just hanging out in BC taking it day by day. So the Basecamp is definitely set up for those that want to dry camp or boondock, but from all the Facebook groups I am on I see very few people using it to store kayaks, biles, etc. The door is used primarily for viewing and air flow with the bug screen up and also many people keep the bed up and use the space underneath, accessible from the back door. The 20 foot has a lot more storage and other features that are even better. It is their most popular unit right now and lead time is 12-14 months.

Well we don't really agree that the 16 is set up for boondocking as the small combo waste tank is a significant problem. The 20 is a huge upgrade and help for boondocking in this regard though. Out of the two basecamp models it would make good sense that the 20 is the most popular although we would have to see your source that supports the Basecamp being Airstreams most popular unit. Well done and truly unbiased. I’m on the fence: Basecamp X or Nest? As for a sink in the wet bath, I would use a small container that has suction. Granted, I’d have to get water from the shower or just bring water from the sink but it is a cheap and easy workaround. The 2020 model has a nice tent option but costs ~$2K. But if I’m spending $35K-$42K then I might as well add the tent (after all it’s only money). No TV or radio but I don’t watch much TV and it’s easy to bring music. Again, thanks for such a great video.

Glad you liked it. The two are very different. Do you need to put gear inside? Cause if you don't we would say hands down the nest but if you need the storage space then you could only get that in the Basecamp. Also where will you be taking it. The Basecamp will go to more off road places then the Nest. The tent is a nice option that increases your outdoor living space and every option has a price to it. If you can manage the bathroom sink issue then great either will work and we get the TV thing we just would watch something downloaded on our computer it really isn't a big deal to us either. I know some folks just carry extra water in big jugs to add to their tank when they are out which does make sense but it is the black/grey tank I worry about most. It's tiny. But it's cute for taking toys out for the weekend. A little sink in the bathroom would be useful. I will be on the road, driving to a Science Fiction Convention when the Full Time RV thing is happening. I'll be at Shasta Caverns on the 6th. So I got the 30 day pass. If Airstream DOES decide to put a bathroom sink in their Basecamps, they should go with a fold-down sink -- like the ones NuCamp uses for it's small T@B travel-trailers (the 320 and 400) and their Cirrus truck-campers -- IMO, that's the best compromise as it gives you a sink but when it's not in use it folds up and is out of the way. A sink that does NOT get out of the way is a negative in such a small bathroom (whether it be a Basecamp or T@B). -- BR

I am averaging 20% water usage for a shower using the shower head on and off switch. The problem areas on the 2019 BaseCamp X I have are the roof plastics surround piece can crack and allow water inside the BaseCamp X. I fixed mine with Rust-oleum Leak seal to stop the leak. I also had a front center window where the roof crack allowed water running down the center window inside and during the winter it froze and busted my center window. That was a $2,000.00 repair I paid out of my pocket because I could not figure out at the time why the center window busted and did not file a claim on my insurance. Another area to watch is at the rear door bottom latch water collects at the bottom latch every time it rains and eventually will rust the latch. The Truma heating system works great I like the gas heater/water heater. Overall I am very happy with my purchase of my 2019 Airstream BaseCamp X and yes I would recommend others to buy the RV but learn from my challenges so your RV trips are less hassle. The one improvement I would want to see on future BaseCamp X models would be more solar batteries and more solar panels built into the RV. I added a third Zamp solar panel and it helps keep batteries around 65% charge using the onboard ceiling fan all night in the summertime. I purchased my 2019 Airstream BaseCamp X new last year and I actually had no idea Airstream even made an off-road version but I am glad I found this one model that fits my needs.

The tables don't go in the nets. The table tops are stowed against the right side bench as it's pictured in your video. The legs get stowed under the bench. And there is not a larger table. Just the two seen in the video. Also, it would have been nice if you had mentioned that you can't boondock and use the USB, power outlets, microwave oven, or A/C since it requires the more oomph that shore power provides. Other than that, good review. And I love your comment about the bathroom needing a sink.

Yes you are right about the table storage and that it has the two seen not a larger one. In all RVs to use the things you mention here it takes more then battery power but nothing a nice solar set up can't fix. Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching

Combined black and grey tank, minimal water storage - sounds like the perfect rig for a composting toilet - that's what we did in our teardrop :). Now you can dump your grey tank almost anywhere (we use biodegradable soap/shampoo/toothpaste); additionally, composting toilets use no water.

If a person is inclined to manage a composting toilet this would be a perfect rig for it. Dumping grey anywhere is not a personal practice for us but we know many folks do it and if you had a composting toilet the tank space could be used entirely for grey, increasing it's capacity and that would be a bonus. Did anyone notice that there is NO standing room in the wet bath. Watch it again. Really...no room to take a shower unless you are straddling the toilet. That is crazy. What were they thinking??

I live in an Airstream Sport 16 and have some disabilities. One thing I like about the trailer in general and the wet bath in particular is the lack of nooks and crannies that have to be cleaned, which is extra difficult for me to keep up with with my health issues. To me the sink seems like one more thing to be cleaned. It is motivation to keep the kitchen sink cleared out indeed! Or sometimes I wash my hands into the toilet using the shower faucet, or spit my tooth brushing waste into the toilet or trash can.

Does Size Matter I wrote an entire book The Airstream That Ran Away with the Spoon, so I’ll try to write slightly less than that here! I thought I was compromising in not getting a 25 foot Airstream, but now I think of all the things I would give up if I went to 25 feet: I can stay in almost any residential driveway where it is legal, which has allowed me to stay in places like close to downtown Pennsylvania for free through Boondockers Welcome, I can do u-turns, I can park in two end-to-end parking spaces, I can almost always get a spot in an rv park with no notice (one time a Park put me in a corner at the end of the road and ran an extension cord from a “real” site), and as mentioned the small space is easier to manage with my poor health. The thing that frustrates me the most is the kitchen, when I’m setting things down on literally every other surface (the bed-is this pan I’m done using cool enough it won’t scorch my sheets?- , the table...) to cook. BTW, we met in passing at the RVE this year.

What the R value in the installation? And this one didn't have a TV (too small)? Can you put solar on an Airstream.

Airstream does not give us an R value and we find that when it comes to RVs R-values are never really accurate. It is true that an Airstream would have a lower R-value then many others. There are 12V plugs and USB so you could hook up some sort of TV with those. Yes the Basecamp does come prewired for solar so you could purchase the rest of the pieces and have a solar set up. @@DoesSizeMatter when we were looking for a small trailer to go with our larger one we did look at these. But the short comings in the design for what we needed and where we wanted to go. Not to mention the cost. One of These just made absolutely no sense. And even if money was no issue. this is NOT a good trailer for boondocking. Actually Airstreams period aren't good trailers for boondocking at all. Designed for the trailer park queens. Can you make them work? Kinda. You gotta really want to though. And even then...limited. But .. People live in tents. So... one can live in anything I guess. All depends on your life style and your priorities. Ive lived for months off my Harley with my tent. Loved it. But I wasn't boondocking for weeks at a time out in wilderness either. Our little trailer cost much less than this one ( put the diff in the gas tank) and works much MUCH better. Better clearance, bigger tanks much better storage, same weight ... hell...even the fridge is bigger. LOL So..if youre a thinking man at all... imo thanks for the vid. Take care.

You are right it totally depends on a person's lifestyle and priorities. I agree it would be tough for us to boondock in this rig too, but it would be tough for us to boondock in our beaver for weeks at a time too. Hmmm maybe it has more to do with us 😂 but I do think the tank size and the fact that they are combined makes boondocking harder. So you have a small one and a big one? Why two?

@@DoesSizeMatter why two? Well...lol. July of 2018 we bought a new 2400 BH Grand Design. Did so only because they made us a good offer in trade for our 2014 trailer and the Grand Design was much better for us long term. Such as in retirement. Although We had no trips planned for 2018. This was planned as a long term down the road trialer anyway. Pulled it 25 minutes to the acreage and into the Quonset where its been ever since. lol . Doing a bunch of mods and upgrades to it. Itll be an awesome trailer when done! Last spring I realized I wanted to use an RV during spring skiing again. Done it a few times over the yrs and really enjoyed it.Trace agreed. I guess because we both love RVing. But we felt the Grand Design was just too big for short ( (distance and duration) trips like that. Its also not finished...lol. Towing in the mountains can also be a challenge. Conditions can turn very bad very fast. Another reason sometimes smallers better. So April 2019 we picked up a 2011 Gulf Stream Conquest 15 BH. Its been great! Perfect actually. Did a bunch of mods and upgrades ( as per usual) :-) over the summer. And its worked out sooo well for us dirtbike camping this summer that it looks like we wont be needing the Grand Design for well....a couple of yrs...at least. Till Im retired I guess. Maybe not even till we sell the house. If and when that happens. lol Prob should just sell it but would lose too much and we ll definitely be using it someday. Its a great trailer. We will use it. It can sit in the Quonset ...that's fine. Ill do my mods and up grades and itll be just like new when we roll it out. Actually even Better! :-) Also we decided this yr we would use the little guy for ALL our overnight ski trips. What the hell! Ski bums don't stay in hotels. Soooo tired of hotels. We've already done a two day two night ski trip to Jasper. Loved it. It was -22C at night . So decently chilly. A Good test. We stayed at a campground cause the trailers winterized and theres good washrooms and power there. Two little electric heaters and we were nice and cozy. There were 12 !! other units in the campground! A really good mix of every type of RV too. Pretty cool. Like a little village. And Trace was sure we d be the only crazy ones. loI Is this for everyone? Nope! You have to love the RV lifestyle...quite a bit Id say. Or just go to a hotel... ( wish I knew how to link pics) But while walking to the washroom at 1:30 am Sun in the cool crisp air. The water rushing over the rocks of the nearby river being the only sound breaking the absolutely blissful, peaceful serenity. The sky was a glow with the brightest display of the universe Id seen in many yrs. ( Jaspers known as one of the best DARK SKY PRESERVE.S in the world! ) It was one of those surreal moments that hits you in such fantastic way. POW!! this is incredible! You just dont have this experience walking to the bathroom in your hotel room. And that's when you're reminded of why you're an RVer. Cheers ! :-)

Wow that does sound like a real experience. As you describe it I can see it and feel it. I know there is a way the air smells on those cold nights too and the silence with the water would have been stunning. So glad you guys have the right RV for you and it is allowing you to have just the kind of experiences you love. You are lucky for these but I can tell you already know it. The only 3 cons We have found with the 22 sport....is the bed being sideways and the person that has the window side has to climb over top if U have to get up during the night..... 2nd it is narrow so u have to move when passing each other in hall area.....3rd doesn’t have a lot of ground clearance so need to be careful. We knew all that when we bought it. All the pros out weigh those 3 cons. Love the quality and everything else about it. Watched all ur airstream videos today ..... very well done. Thanks

It does come standard prewired for solar and has the option of 180w solar package with AGM batteries. I could not find more info on a cable hook up but in a trailer like this most buyers are probably not too worried about TV and if they did want to watch there is USB for downloaded entertainment or if they are somewhere that has wifi, cable would not be necessary. The hammock shelves are not my personal choice but the manufacturer wouldn't have put them there (or at least kept them there) if it was not meeting the needs of their customers. So as we always say, there's a right RV out there for everybody. This one may not be for you but check out our other reviews I'm sure you will find something that suits your taste. too many negatives. Not really secure. anybody could steal your propane tanks and/or get into the storage areas!

You are right, there are not locks on the storage areas or the propane cover but there isn't on most propane covers. We have never heard of anyone having their propane tanks stolen and if it were a common problem manufacturers would deal with it. As for the storage areas, they are pretty small and we would not suggest putting anything of value in them and then you will have not worries. Theft from these areas is also not something we have ever heard of. Thanks for watching.

Haha, as you will notice when watching our reviews, we don't watch much TV so we don't think we can answer this question for you. We are hoping one of our other viewers may have the answer. We do watch Netflix on occasion but we just hook up our phone to the TV or watch on our computer. We didn't even know there was a Netflix TV. Hopefully someone else will come on with an answer. I use a tablet and download shows for viewing offline. I have a Bose Revolve+ speaker which rocks the trailer for music and movies :)

The basecamp does have more storage then some but less than others. The idea of the Basecamp is to be able to haul bigger things like bikes and climbing gear and that sort of thing. So depending on what type of storage you are looking for we suggest you watch many of our other reviews to see some different choices. Thanks for watching.

Did you notice the exposed fiberglass insulation under the bench seats? All the fiberglass fibers will get into the storage space and living space over time. Poor design Airstream!

We have looked and relooked at this, and we don't see any fiberglass insulation exposed. We did see a small piece of dusty fluff on the side of the wheel well under the bench but it was not insulation. Hope that clarifies things. Thanks for watching.
