Here's a bit of an Alabama connection to Linebacker II. Bama linebacker Derrick Thomas' ('85-'88) father was a pilot of a B-52 during Vietnam, and was lost during the Linebacker II operation. Derrick grew up in south Florida, later coming to Alabama to play Linebacker. He finished his career at Bama as an All American, with a total of 52 QB sacks. He always said he felt fortunate to finish with the same number of sacks as the B-52 number his father flew, in addition to the Linebacker connection.

As an USAF veteran I appreciate your thoughtful and insightful parallel from football and military service. I’ve followed you for a while, but I will admit - this is the closest I’ve felt to you. Even with your experience while in Vietnam, I find it interesting how your bridge all of your experiences into a holistic view of the world and find a bright side. I wish more of us would view things from all sides.

Hi Michelle, I appreciate your comment so much. As you can imagine, this is a fine line to walk. I have been trying to honestly convey my experiences and feelings and how they have been affected by travel. I have nothing but the highest respect for all those who have served in our military, and I have tried to make that clear many times over the years on this channel. With this video I was trying to express some optimism - a bright side, as you say. Where we once found enemies, now we can find great friends. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts here.

I too am a graduate of USAFA. But in my years we wore blues, only won 8 games in 4 years, froze and got sunburned. We had to attend the games and we were charged to attend. We actually went to the opponents team and “stole” the female cheerleaders since we didn’t have women. But thanks for a great video, as always.

I remember Linebacker II, from the perspective of sitting in a plane most of the day, in full battle gear, waiting to see if we were going. On our North Carolina base, all of our B-52s, KC135s, and F4s were taking off all day long heading to Viet Nam. Turns out, our engineering team did not go that time, but it was a scary being out of touch, my wife had no idea what was happening. Many of my friends became prisoners of war during that operation. And if memory serves me, the peace talks had been stalled for quite some time, shape of the table and all that. Nixon grew impatient and ordered the bombing to speed things up. And it apparently worked as the peace treaty was signed a few months later. Too bad so many were killed on both sides for a politician's war.
@LongLongHoneymoon Жыл бұрын
Thanks, this year I have been trying to better educate myself about Vietnam and what happened during the war. My uncle flew helicopters there, and my cousin was killed there (Don Leslie Michael, Medal of Honor recipient, died in 1967 in Tay Ninh province). Next year in January we are flying into Saigon and I'm going to try to visit Tay Ninh (about 55 miles north of Saigon). There is still B-52 wreckage in Hanoi. We will likely return to Hanoi in January. I will post more content here in the future about our experiences in Vietnam. I try to stay neutral in the videos, but I like your phrase "politician's war" - it's truly hard for me to understand how North Vietnam ever posed any threat to North Alabama, and why my cousin was shipped across the world to die there. If we don't question authority, it will keep on happening. God Bless you and all who faithfully served. I appreciate your comments very much.

It would be a lot easier, and no doubt more commercially viable to focus on fart jokes and generator reviews instead. I am a Linebacker II veteran too. Maybe you should do a little socializing with the families of the air crew that didn't return. We sent 125 B-52's off at one time and we counted them as they took off. When the last one took off from Guam, there was a strange silence, because we knew the power each of those planes had and even felt sorry for the enemy. Until we heard 3 of our planes had been shot down. If you can't have respect for people that served your country, I don't know why you want to set foot on one of the most revered sites of the USAF. Great but somewhat sobering video. Guys my age remember the bombings of Vietnam all too well. And yet today we are camped at Lake Conroe Texas next to a young Vietnamese couple with two absolutely beautiful young girls (4yrs & 6y I would guess) whose parents moved here many years ago. As we shared some dog park time together he mentioned they spend 6 months each in Vietnam and 6 months here in the US. Most interesting was his comment that the freedom to live the RV lifestyle here in the US made this all possible. Beautiful.

Thanks, you guys. When you swing for the fences, sometimes you strike out. These recent videos are sort of like songs. You don’t know exactly how they’re going to turn out when you start writing them. I struggled putting this video together but eventually, you have to close the door on one project and move onto the next. I appreciate you giving these videos a chance.
