I absolutely LOVE that you're picking up on the sapphic subtext. It also makes perfect sense that Vi masks her attraction (and tests Cait's) in such a comically aggressive manner. The way that this attraction draws out the many facets of each of their personalities is one of my favorite things about the show.

Another interesting note about the Jayce's fall scene: The only councilor who is not involved in all the corruption is Heimerdinger, which makes total sense. But he is also completely unaware it is happening. So focused on the performance, on the great beauty and achievements of the city, that he turns a blind eye to all the problems and dark sides of Piltover that really need his attention

I love that the whole thread of "wanting to prove yourself, getting benched and feeling like a failure, then going rogue to get results all on your own" is what both Jinx AND Cait do in episode 4 One cool thing the show does is give matching eye colors to characters whose paths are meant to parallel and contrast with each other. Jinx and Cait are both blue, Viktor and Jayce are both amber, and Vi and Sevika are both gray, for example

I love that Mel is so long-game oriented that when Jayce doesn't do what she wants, she doesn't retaliate but instead gets him promoted to a level where he'll learn to see things her way. And overall, this show handles corruption so brilliantly!

One of my favorite details is after the scene with Viktor in the hospital bed, they cut to Savika who toss down two cards. If you look close, those cards are "death" and "the magician"

Regarding the cards, without lore knowledge it can still just be interpreted as ”the magician” being Viktor or Jayce, as they are replicating magic/mages with their development of hextech, and death is self explanatory. If it has a deeper further meening - we’ll just have to see in season two!

Heh, Arcane came out in between season 1 and season 2 of Kevin Smith's He-Man series. I reasonably enjoyed He-Man's first season as a not-great but entertaining thing to play in the background while I worked. Season 2 was probably just as enjoyable as disposable entertainment, but I'll never know, because after Arcane all I could see was how much more poorly and carelessly it was made - for the ten minutes or whatever it was before I turned it off. Except for a couple of anime things, Arcane basically ruined animated shows for me lol

Interestingly, crows have been pretty closely tied to fear and trauma within this world since way before Arcane came out! There is even a playable character in LoL who uses crows to attack people and taunts them with their worst fears. He even has lines specifically for Jinx about how "they're all dead because of you" or something to that effect

@@artxroyalty I know, Caitlin s my favorite too. I love how she didn't accept an easy life style as one of the richest/most prominent families in Piltover which she totally could have. But instead, She is consistently trying to prove her own merit and gets satisfaction in knowing that it is her skills that get her what's she wants and not her wealth/family name. But she's got a hunger to see the world for how it is truly is, granted her ability to "see" the world for what it is, is being hampered by her mother. As Caitlin says in episode 4 to Jayce. "She'd do anything to keep me from seeing the real world. This seems like such an insignificant line but its actually a very important detail. As the series progresses and she spends time with Vi, she is often found making comments that come off as privileged or insensitive, but its never because she trying to be rude, its because she doesn't know any better and her asking those questions is her trying to understand the reality of the situation. On top of this she has a good heart and genuinely just wants to do good to other people. To take care of and contribute to the good of society. This attitude is the reason why she becomes an Enforcer despite either not having a job or choosing a cushy job for rich people. She was definitely inspired by Grayson who showed her there's a way she can genuinely help others. The last thing I like about her is her aversion to killing others (unless she absolutely has no other choice) as in media it is frequently shown that she shoots to disable. That's why she is shown hitting Sevika's arm 3 times. Caitlin could have easily headshot Sevika but instead shot up Sevika's arm so that she would no longer be a danger/threat. She has such a good heart and I just love everything about Caitlin as she carries alot of the same ideals I have as well.

Honestly love how well Arcane shows us how they write their characters, even from episode 1 they were able to establish what our characters were like without much time, just seeing Jayce’s apartment we already have a sense of who he is before we meet him, and in the flashback of Caitlyn in this episode established some of her values as a person without the characters explain who they are for the sake of the audience. Love this show so much and could honestly talk about it all day

Jace's story is very much an example of "the road to hell is paved with good intentions". Mel's actions makes sense with some background of the World of LOL; Peltover is a colony of a greater empire. Mel is in the city to represent the interests of her family. The power of the city, and the power of herself in the city, translates to the power and prestige of her family back home. Also, Powder/Jinx is very much one of those diamonds in the rough that Viktor/Jace were planning to help. She's cracking the secrets of Hextech from some scattered notes and scraps that she assembled in her cave workshop. She makes bombs, gadgets, and all kinds of stuff from things that people throw away. Imagine what she could have done if she was in the Academy? If she had the resources that Jace had? But ultimately, the new wealth of Peltover has not translated to the wealth of those down below. "Those at the top keep getting richer, while those at the bottom keep getting poorer". A fact that Jace doesn't seem to understand, and the council doesn't want to address.

The flaw in Jayce's character is he's so open-minded he gets swayed so much wherever the wind is blowing. The flaw in vi's is she's so headstrong, she just goes charging in even discretion would have been the better course. Cait's rebelliousness let's her be critical of what she sees, and her tutelage by Greyson gives her a mission; but her privileged life - for now - is in the way of truly understanding the probblems of her society.

For sure! IIRC, one of the writers was asked to rank the many scientist characters by their intelligence, and they said that Powder would easily take first place. And they noted - imagine what she could have accomplished had she been raised in Piltover with access to the education and resources of the Academy.

Vi made a mistake by attacking Sevika. She knows Sevika works for Silco who she thinks has Powder captive. Smart move is just to follow Sevika back to Silco which would get her to Powder. Much as I love Vi she is impulsive, and resorts to a punch first mode far more often than not.

Also, besides the gut punch, i like at the beginning of the episode there's this red line on the ground to stand behind for your safety in the prison. So when Cait decides to go rogue and release vi she literally crosses the line

Btw, for Silco thinking Vi was dead, it isnt that he didnt see Vander save Vi, it's that Markus abused his power as an enforcer to jail Vi for no reason as a messed up way of keeping her safe from Silco (after chloroform-ing her in Ep 3) and then probably told Silco she was dead

I highly recommend checking it out after finishing Arcane! Trust me. The Animators are INSANE. As an artist I could only imagine the cramps and carpal tunnel they got from this but they've always been like this. That's french animation for ya!

Silbo didn't think Vi was dead because of the explosion because in Episode 3 he asked Powder where her sister was and Powder said she left her. Mel is just a player for power. Loved the Vi and Sevika fight. Yeah shipping Vi and Caitlyn isn't far off because the game cinematic likes to pair them up.

As for James, his fate was decided by the court, not the police. Despite numerous hints of democracy, Piltover is ruled by aristocrats. In fact, it's not even corruption. Everything in Piltover belongs to these noble families. They consider it their own. And the council of representatives of these families is needed to ensure that there are no conflicts between the aristocrats. James comes from a rather poor family, but he is also an aristocrat. And yes, Lower City, the aristocrats also consider their property. Piltover thrives on the resources that the Lower City extracts. For aristocrats, this goes without saying. And they don't understand at all why they should care about such an insignificant phenomenon as the residents of the Lower City. All their democracy is nothing more than a game in order to look good in their surroundings.

I see this passing a lot of people by, or just not occurring to them for some reason, but it's a big deal that's core to a lot of her behavior including with Silco. Jinx is trapped in her like, 11 or 12 year old mindset, and in some ways even like 6 year old her.
