I saw on another site that the guy cycled the engine 5 or 6 times before shifting into reverse, he said that works perfectly. I'll try that myself.

That thermostat has a tendency to freeze closed so it's best to get rid of the thermostat that's in the system. What I mean by freeze closed is it will only allow the circulation of the hot transmission fluid inside the transmission and will not send it out to the cooler. Ram put it in there to increase gas mileage but it's a fraction. Block on the side of the transmission. There are two lines that go to it and two lines that come out. 😅

I’m thinking about taking the thermostat out. It’s cheap and easy to do. I wonder if anybody has data on how much fuel savings you might lose by taking longer to heat up the fluid

@@DavidFixIt I took the thermostat out of the transmission in my RAM and with banks products I'm getting 25 if I keep it at 60 or so miles hour and if I bump it up to over 70 I still get 22 mpg. The transmission is also an old school transmission, so the Valvoline multi-vehicle transmission fluid is supposed to be perfect for it if you don't want to spend the $70 per quart at the Mopar fluid runs. But getting the thermostat out of that transmission because it oftentimes fails in the closed position. So then it doesn't allow the transmission to put the heat into the radiator. It just recirculates it into the transmission then across the plastic clutches and that's a recipe for disaster My trans temps usually stay low like I would say around 120° on a 4-hour trip that involves two mountain passes and that would be freeway driving, No load.

What brand of fluid did you use? I couldn't see the labels on the bottles. Getting ready to do mine and am a little nervous. LOL

I used Amsoil OE Multi-Vehicle Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid. If you are just changing the fluid it’s exactly like an oil change. If you want to change the filter, I would make sure you can get to the bolts in the back of the pan before you order your stuff. I just towed our Rv 300 miles or so. Shifts nice- no overheating at all.

Valvoline makes an all-purpose lubricant as well. The thing with this transmission is it's really a really old design and so you can pretty much use any ATF in there as long as it's multi-vehicle and not the new world standard. Just remember after you fill up cold to check hot, hot being at operating temperature It expands when it's hot and so it can quickly expand up to the valve body and that's where you'll run into issues. You always check oils when they're hot if you're concerned about max fill, caveat is per manual. Transmissions have about a pint of overfill capacity.

How many miles had it been since the last service?

About 700 miles. No trouble so far. No leaks, I haven’t had to add fluid, and it still shifts nicely. I haven’t towed yet but I have driven it enough to get it hot almost every week.
